How many inches of mattress topper is best?
Should you buy a new mattress or a mattress topper?
Mattresses should last 8 to 10 years. If you've had an uncomfortable bed for less than that, a mattress topper can reintroduce comfort to your sleep. Mattress toppers are great for softening a bed that's too firm, increasing motion isolation, and, in some instances, introducing cooling features, but if your bed is sagging, lumpy, or no longer supportive, a mattress topper is only a bandaid fix. If your bed is older than 10 years, look for a replacement in our best mattress guide.
What type of mattress topper is the best?
It depends on your sleep needs. Down mattress toppers are plush and cushy, which is best for those who prefer a soft feel. On the other hand, memory foam and latex are both firmer materials with more support. Latex tends to be cooling, but you can also find special cooling memory foam mattress toppers as well.

I got a new firm mattress a few months back thinking it would help my back, but its actually made things worse. I'm a side sleeper and I think the thing is just too hard on my hips and lower back. Waking up stiff as a board every morning is getting annoying as sh*t
EDIT: Thanks to everyone who recommended one, this topper has finally sorted the back pai im getting from this mattress, in love with it!
I'm thinking a topper is the way to go rather than forking out for a whole new matress. I've been looking at memory foam ones but I'm a bit worried about that sinking feeling and getting too hot. Has anyone tried a latex topper instead?
Also wondering about thickness. A lot of them seem to be around 3 inches. Is that enough to make a real difference on a properly firm mattress?
Would love to hear from any other side sleepers who've managed to sort this out
