I know playing on a 49 keys keyboard is heresy for you, and I totally understand that! However:
I am an electronic music producer but I am a beginner in the art of playing the piano, so I will play beginner's pieces
I don't have a lot of room at home
I'm a DJ and I want to take my keyboard on stage to improvise over my songs
The issue I have is that all the quality keyboards recommended on this sub are 88keys. The other thing is that I had master keyboards for 10 years and I recently play on a Roland FP-10 and it was magical. Although, I didn't use the 88 keys at all since I played only beginner stuff.
Price range: under 550$ (I expect to buy second-hand at ~350$)

Casio sells a super cheap portable keyboard that also takes batteries. I use it to practice scales and arpeggios while watching my young kids. It's a fine way to sneak in some extra practice time, but you're not going to master dynamics, etc. on it.

Even beginner pieces need at least 71 keys at times. Would that be possibile considering ur space limit?

Howdy, I’m very interested in learning piano but work in the offshore industry and spend 6-8 months at a time living on a ocean going cargo ship. As such, space is my biggest issue. I’m looking at the Carry-On folding pianos since I can take them with me and it’s quiet practice with headphones. I’d like to get the 88 key option for a full set but 49 keys would probably work much better for my situation.
As a beginner, would learning on 49 keys handicap me at all of if I ever got to switch to a full 88 keys?
Would that difference REALLY matter as novice or no??

49 key keyboards are not weighted. Non weighted keyboards are not really pianos. You can't learn with that.

The difference does matter, but it's not true that you "can't" learn with a 49 key keyboard, or that it's equivalent to playing a guitar with fewer than 6 strings. There will be really big drawbacks. You won't be able to effectively learn how to control your dynamics, for instance. But you can learn some things, like how to read music and you'll learn, well, how to physically press the keys to make music. If you can make an 88 key instrument work, you should get an 88 key digital piano. Basically nobody makes high-quality digital pianos in any size other than 88 keys, so all of the smaller keys will feel less realistic and sound worse. If you end up really enjoying piano, you will want an 88 key keyboard sooner rather than later, so the smaller keyboard may end up just being a waste of time and money if you can afford and make room for an 88 key. But if your only choices are 49 keys or nothing, 49 keys is the better choice.
