Secondhand isn’t for everyone, but my couch came from OfferUp, my dining table from Craigslist, and my credenza from Facebook Marketplace. I like to browse the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store, too.

Estates sales and thrift stores. I usually do a pretty thorough sanatize/clean (leave it outside in the sun, clean all the surfaces, wash with warm water and laundry detergent, etc.) furnished our whole house like this. Quality of furniture is usually better than ikea too.

If you want something a little different, my wife and I love Idea Furniture in Chicago on Irving Park It’s a Polish store with imported European designs. The quality is way better than similarly priced items at typical furniture stores, I’d call it mid priced. We especially like the couches, they are more firm and supportive than a lot of the big mushy couches we run into at a lot of places.

Value city is one thing, but Costco has great furniture. Just not much of a selection. Darvin has always been good for us in the past also.

Hey Chicagoans! Where do you buy furniture in your beautiful city? Anything except Crate and Barrel? Are there any other places I can walk in and check the stuff offline, like good old-school way? C&B prices work for me; Design Within Reach — hell no :) I moved here about three years ago and finally admitted that it’s probably time to make my rental apartment feel less rental (I have enough IKEA; it doesn’t feel like long-term home, so it’s not in the equation).

Roy’s. We had such bad luck searching for a couch a few years ago. Everything was either $$$$$$ or a 6-12 week wait after ordering. Roy’s has a showroom system that immediately tells you how soon any piece can be delivered. They were so nice and affordable too.
