Stupid? Oh yes! Are AI Detectors Reliable? I’ve tested a bunch of AI detectors, and here’s the deal: none are 100% reliable, not even 85%. Even the best ones only hit about 70–85% accuracy – and that’s in perfect conditions. Free tools often do worse. False Alarms Happen Sometimes, detectors flag real human writing as AI. This is especially true for non-native English speakers or overly structured writing. I’ve seen stuff like the U.S. Constitution get marked as AI! honestly there’s no "best" ai detector bc they all mess up sometimes, even the big names like gptzero or turnitin can throw false positives. what i usually do is run my draft thru a detector just to see what it spits out, then smooth it out a bit. lately ive been using walterwrites ai to humanize my text so it looks more natural and doesn’t trip stuff as much. not foolproof but fwiw it makes me feel way less paranoid when i submit stuff

AI detector tools are unreliable, because they themselves rely on AI! I've heard multiple stories of people who put historical texts into AI detectors and the detectors said those texts were AI-generated, lol. So there's no reason to use an AI detector. Clients sometimes don't understand this, sadly. Fortunately, I haven't had this experience, but many other writers have been falsely accused by clients of using AI because an AI detector said so, and the client believed the AI detector.

None of them. I would testify in court to that fact. There's a 0% probability of success. It is literally an AI just pulling nonsense out of its ass and someone selling it. I can make an AI content detector that will beat or match any on the market and that means nothing.

I've utilized a pair of these (GPTZero was inconsistent for me), but truly, AI detectors can only proceed so far, particularly when the importance is great such as with scholarly material. I once had a document flagged simply because it "seemed too polished". Following that disarray, I quit taking chances and began getting assistance from LeoEssays . They genuinely compose everything anew, so I have never encountered problems with AI identification methods. The advantage? It is organized correctly, novel, and does not read as though it originated from an automated system. If you aim to bypass AI alerts yet still obtain excellent output, they represent a much more secure option than attempting to expertly manipulate the detectors.

I’ve been grading a ton of essays lately, and it’s honestly getting harder to tell when students are using AI. Even writing that sounds human can still trip detectors, and vice-versa. I tested a handful of AI-detection tools side-by-side to see which ones actually work for academic writing, and I was pretty surprised by the results.

The one that stood out the most was Proofademic AI. It consistently performed better than the other detectors I tried, especially on longer essay-style responses. It picked up on AI-generated structure and phrasing that the other tools completely missed, and it didn’t throw nearly as many false positives on human writing.

Has anyone else been using AI detectors for grading? Is Proofademic the best option right now, or are there other tools you’d recommend that are reliable for academic work?

AI detectors aren’t great. I use the Google chrome extension Revision History as it allows me to see large copy and pastes, and I can “rewatch” students working in real time.

So I am wrapping my dissertation and want to make sure it is not flagged as AI. I have gotten in trouble before (although it was my own mistake and luckily not a part of my main project), however, I am very cautious and careful now and not using AI. However, even things like Grammarly and Word editing can be AI flagged now.

Has anyone tried a reliable detector and can suggest any?

I like Proofademic AI, it is the best AI detector and is quite accurate and most reliable one, I've ever used.

I’ve got some papers that I am 100% sure are AI generated. I’ve only ever used Turnitin for plagiarism but these are first person observations and not research papers.

Require direct quotes from sources in the paper. When you suspect an AI-generated paper, go to the citations and see if the quotes exist. It’s not foolproof, but it’s pretty good.

Walter Writes AI is kinda my go-to lately tbh… gptzero’s probably the most popular one but it throws a lot of false flags sometimes, same with copyleaks. fwiw i’ve run stuff through turnitin, then cleaned it up using the walterwrites humanizer and it slid past pretty clean. honestly feels like one of the best ai writing assistants if you’re trying to make stuff sound more natural.

It doesn't exist - any such tool out there claiming to do AI detection is outright lying.

Tried a few. A couple of them said no/very little AI even though the kids confessed that they used ChatGPT.

No such thing, currently. Require that kids use sources, and use prompts that require more creative/lateral thinking. Generative AI can't cite or use sources properly. If it's a requirement, it will automatically mean that AI generated essays fail.

You and your brain and the other body of work the student has provided. Also your pedagogy. That’s a little glib, but your question indicates you know that many of the AI detectors are insufficient or inaccurate. The best we’ve done in our building is a lot of focus on process; drafting, sharing via google docs so that we can see version histories as the teacher; and being able to point to the really glaring features of AI work that don’t mesh with student choices in other work. Then do your best to link assignment grades / rubric points to language and skills and particular things from class. Certain sentence patterns, or how you want explanantions written, or “original voice of the writer.” And try to minimize grading anything that could easily be written by robots. It’s not terribly easy or convenient but it’s the current landscape.

I am currently writing my bachelors thesis and discovered earlier today that one of my colleages had used Generative AI systems to produce large pieces of text. I discovered this by using available online AI-detection tools. The colleage in question says that everything will be rewritten but I want to make sure. There is no foolproof method of detecting ai generated content. Many of the online tools are just checking for words and phrases often used by certain ai. If you happen to use the same phrase in your text, then the detection tools will say it's ai generated. Don't trust online tools. Just accepting AI is now something people will use, and trusting people to read the generated content and alter it to be their own work is the best you can do for now.

I tried zeroGPT but have doubts about its accuracy. Do you have experience with any AI detection tools?

No AI tool is 100% correct. I have tried ZeroGPT, contentatscale, Copyleaks, Quetext and more. Many have false positives. Some even detected my old written content from 7 years ago as AI lol, which is hilarious. So, based on that, now I don't give a shit about detection lol. I mainly focus on the quality, user-focussed content and SEO. If a content is ok on the basis of these three factors, then its good to go. I have tested it as well and got pretty good results.

We're using AI for blogging and if you just use ChatGPT they will probably 100% detect content as AI generated. But there are many false positives. But if you use some advanced prompting or prompt chaining, AI detectors won't work at all. Currently we're testing Emplibot for content creation and the results are "interesting". You're essentially better off by tossing a coin instead of using an "AI detector". TL;DR: AI detection tools are mostly useless IMO.

I've been scouring the internet looking for an AI detector that works. Every single one I've tested so far believes the work I've copied and pasted into the detector, that I created using ChatGPT, is 100% human.

For context, I'm a co-operative education teacher that has students submitting journals using a program my board mandates I use. If I we're a regular classroom teacher, I'd make these assholes do everything by hand, in front of me.

I'm an e-learning teacher, and I've been doing a lot of PD and other training on AI in the last couple of years. None of the detectors available right now work, and the only thing that you can really do to prevent students using AI is building more AI resilience into your assessment tools. The more you can build personal experience into the assignment, the harder it is for AI to duplicate it. Also have students submit process work, organizers, and video reflections where they are talking about why they made their decisions in their assignment (metacognitive stuff). AI is really good at general knowledge stuff, so the more you can make students make specific reflections on their own experience, the more likely is that you're going to get their own work.

Honestly they are a waste of time and money because they will never detect with 100% accuracy and unless they do, students(read: parents) will always be able to point to that ~20% uncertainty and say "You can't prove it!" Better to use free apps like draftback for Google Docs(watch playbacks of them writing the paper) or have them handwrite assignments in class

Detectors don’t work. I installed a Google Chrome extension titled “Revision History” and it lets me see how long each student worked on the doc, if any large copy and pastes were made, etc.
