I make a living power carving. I'd be lost without angle grinders. I keep 4 on rotation. One has an 80 grit flap disc -for roughing out shapes and taking away material super fast. One has the same flap disc set up but I 180 grit. It's the tool you grab next after the previous tool . (Also it's great for getting a basic edge on chisels/scapers.) One has a ball gouge ( arbortech) this makes holes for bowls, etc. Is also great for texturing patterns and scooping out hollows. One has a power chisel. (Arbortech). It does the job of a hand chisel at fast speed. ( *NB easy to fuck up the work with if you're not diligent/careful) Work noticing I don't buy new angle grinders. Wood dust and having it switched on for hours long sessions is hard on their motors and brushes. Luckily they're plentiful and cheap at garage sales. If/when they die/burn out keep the locking nuts and washers etc. In case you buy one at the next garage sale without the right one. Also worth mentioning. Angle grinder is a wolf in sheep's clothing. They don't look like something to be afraid of but they are. It's knicknamed the wheel of death for a reason. Tuck your shirt in. Tie your hair back. Prepare your work area . *Lay the extension power cord out in such a way so you could kick it out of the wall socket with your boot If need be. *If you get the angle of an angle grinder wrong it bucks and kicks. In one instance i've had it grab a shirt sleeve with so much torque, it spun wildly and trapped my hand in the shirt sleeve in such a way it blocked the grinder's off switch. Angle Grinder for Wood Carving - Woodcarving Illustrated
I had a "Merlin" from King Arthur ... neck grinder with a bunch of wood carving attachments. Didn't use it for years but finally got into carving and was using it to remove excess wood and to get basic shapes. It burned out really quick. Of course, since I had bought it years before, no warranty left. At $200+ a pop, I am reluctant to rebuy it if it dies that quickly. I was thinking of just buying a standard 4.5" angle grinder ... Angle grinder or die grinder?
You might want to try an angle grinder first before you purchase one just to get a feel for it. They aren’t for everyone. I find them loud, dusty and semi dangerous, (creating a lot of fatigue). I use a rotary tool (foredom with typhoon bits) if I’m going electric, but if I really need to remove a lot of material the Swedish carving axe is still often the tool I start with. It really depends on the project. Eventually having a couple options is where you want to be. I would encourage you to test these things out because it sounds like you might be spending a lot of time using whatever you select. More on reddit.com

February 12, 2021 - There are lots of people making amazing wood texture patterns with these grinding discs and burrs too. These can be done to add interest to a table base or custom lamp. Or they could be made as stand-alone wall art pieces. I am currently working on a project where I textured a log, then burn it for a pretty dramatic effect. So yeah, carve whatever you can dream up. I mentioned in the introduction that you don’t need that many tools to get started carving. Just an angle grinder and a Kutzall disc at a bare minimum.

February 15, 2017 - Last year I bought a 5" Hitachi variable speed grinder and I love it. It's very powerful, smooth, and relatively quiet. March 2, 2009 - I bought a 2-pack of Bosch 4 1/2" grinders at HD a few months ago, and so far they are great. I am usually pretty careful with my tools, but for some reason I treat hammer-drills, Sawzalls, and angle grinders like rented mules. They take a beating. I have had a few over the years, and the only one that I was disappointed with was a DeWalt.

October 12, 2023 - I have used the Arbor tech for carving chair seats and other furniture parts but it's too aggressive for instruments. ... I've made a few gun stocks and I needed to shape the wood in ways my table saw is not a reasonable tool to use. My bandsaw was useful, of course, but still I needed to shape curves.
