I have recently become very concerned about the security of my Microsoft accounts since one of them was deleted by a Russian hacker. Thankfully, only my Minecraft account was on it; none of my personal info was. So I need an anti-virus that is free and capable of these points. Btw I use AVG currently but basically everything is hidden behind a paywall. I want something that's free but also like Bitdefender. Also mods pls don't delete this saying there's stuff in the wiki, Im genuinely really concerned about my account safety.
Trackers and viruses Support: Block suspicious hackers, trackers and viruses. Optional: Have a feature like in Bitdefender where it scans a file before opening or smth.
Optional: I don't know if this is possible but account security.
Scans for finding hidden flaws or something on the PC, this is there in AVG but all that really happens is that they find nothing, but then they want you to pay for some random stuff that might happen.
Doesn't randomly have a popup showing to upgrade(optional)
I just like all the features of premium BitDefender and premium AVG. But I just want them for free.
This is really important for me. :)

What's the best free antivirus program?
Deciding what the best antivirus program is depends on what your needs and objectives are. We value security, performance, user-friendliness, price, support, and presence of a mobile app. In EXPERTE.com's evaluation of free antivirus programs, Avast excelled in all of these categories and is our best free solution.
What Else Can Free Antivirus Do?
Almost every antivirus scans files on access to ensure malware can't launch, and it also scans the entire system on demand or on a schedule you set. Once cleaning and scheduling are complete, blocking all access to malware-hosting URLs is another effective way to prevent trouble. Many extend that protection to steer users away from phishing sites, which are fraudulent websites that attempt to steal login credentials for financial and other sensitive sites. A few rate links in search results, flagging any dangerous or iffy ones.
Behavior-based detection, a feature of some antiviruses, is a two-edged sword. On the one hand, it can detect viruses that have never been seen before. On the other hand, if it's not done right, it can baffle the user with messages about perfectly legitimate programs.
Any antivirus software should eliminate spyware and other types of malware, but some also include features specifically designed for spyware protection. Features like encryption to protect sensitive data and webcam control to prevent remote spying are available in commercial editions, not free ones. However, some free editions include features like a secure deletion file shredder or a free password manager.
Installing all security updates for Windows, your web browsers, and other popular applications is one easy way to keep your PC protected. Windows 11 makes it easier than ever to stay up to date, but there are still numerous security holes in older Windows versions, popular apps, and add-ons. Scanning for vulnerabilities in the form of missing updates is a feature most often found in commercial antivirus tools, but it can also be found in some free ones. In the list below, you can see which programs include these useful features.
Editors’ Note: Given that the US government has banned new sales of Kaspersky security products, we no longer recommend them.
What does an antivirus program do?
An antivirus program guards your computer, laptop, or device against viruses, Trojans, ransomware, and other malware. They provide scans and monitor background threats to give you real-time protection. Many antivirus programs include additional security tools like parental controls, a VPN, or an ad blocker. For mobile devices, anti-theft measures like GPS location and remote locking or access are important.

Hi
I joined to ask people's opinions on what the best basic free antivirus software is. My Malwarebtyes subscription expired and to save some money, I've decided to uninstall it and go for something free and basic that'll get the job done. I've recently installed AVG Free, but I'm still unsure. Everything these days is subscription based, which I'm not a big fan of and miss the times when you just bought things with a one-time payment and it was yours to install on many devices. :-\ There's also 'catches' I find, where a piece of software will scan your computer, will find something, but then advise you to go 'Premium' in order to get/remove it. Thoughts?
Thanks
