I dont like to read on my phone's small screen. I often use Text to speech to read news and long email. But the app Im currently using has too many restrictions and ads. Recommend me a good text to speech app. Preferably one with other language options. Thanks.

Hey, I hope this is the right place to ask this, but I struggle so much with reading, due to some neurological conditions and just overall lack of energy.

But I'm actually a bookworm. I usually try to get audiobooks, but often books aren't available as such and also reading the news, lengthy emails etc is very difficult and often I have to wait days until I find a day where I'm well enough to actually do that and it takes ages and afterwards all my energy is gone and I'm having neurological symptoms and am just crushed for days...

Anyways... The question is, does anyone know a good TTS app or browser addon?

If possible nothing big and fancy, just a simple reader with good pronouncing skills, that I can use directly on a browser or in a downloadable app.

If there's a couple of voice options to pick from that would also be really cool.

If you know other subreddits where I can ask this to get more answers, please do let me know!

Free and paid options.I want to read books and documents on the go so I decided listening to it is the best way to go. However I would need to either convert pdfs into mp3s that don't sound terrible or gett a text to speech or eBook reader app for that. I would like free and paid options please. Thanks

A friend recently introduced me to this genre and I love what I’ve read so far! But I’m desperate to find a way to listen to them over long hours. Does anyone know of a text-to-speech app that isn’t unbearable?

Or, alternatively, is there anywhere that I can find audio versions of novels (or web-novels) that are read by fans? I’ve only found a couple of playlists on youtube and I’m struggling to find any others, mostly because I don’t know what to search for. I’d really appreciate as many recommendations as possible! This seems like a very welcoming community and I’m happy to be here ☺️

You can thanks me later, but for corporate slave me who have to work long hours to live in this mundane life and no longer have the time like I once had in my younger years to really read with the limited times after work to do chores before the cycle repeats itself, the one app I found and used that saved my sanity and help me through my stresses by allowing me to still enjoy my reading, again to save my sanity, is the app called "Audify". It's the best app, seriously the best app, for web-novel reading. Your can correct pronunciation (as you know English AI don't pronounce Foreign names correctly); skipped words or phrase you don't care for, have the app automatically load the next chapter in the website, change reading speed, voice pitches, etc., I also preferred using this to read epub and pdf too because the display is just better. And with the customizations, it can't be beaten. Now to mention some cons about this app, if you don't like AI mechanical voice, you may not like it even if it gives you plentiful of voice options to choose from. I was able to find a voice that reads fine to me, so I have no problem with it. And like every other text to speech apps out there, the reading source it pulls from is the underlayer text sources. For example, novels on CG website will not read well because of their texts protection system that scrambled part of a paragraph. When it get to that part, it'll read the gibberish scrambled text. But any websites that can be read in Reader mode, can be read just fine. I really am thankful to all the translators and group out there that don't scrambled their texts. Edit: I just wanna add that the app is free to use.

mmm I don't know if any of the official licenses have audio books. It's a pretty niche market as it is, I would think that at least the big ones might have audiobooks (MXTX trifecta) but I dont see that as an option even. I know that audio dramas are a thing, which are a bit different than audio books as its mostly just dialogue with background queues/noises (think like, The Magnus Archives, or any story-based podcasts on Spotify). However I don't know if any of these have English audio; they're usually done to English subs. But maybe someone else has better info on audio options.

There have been a lot of these, particularly Google text to speech which is ubiquitous and I remember having used Ivona text to speech back in the day which was awesome but was suited more towards navigation so it frequently mispronounced words with those of navigation. Nowadays the TTS market is mostly these older apps, using the default ones (Google's) or paid services like speechify.

What if I told you there are local neural TTS engines for android that work pretty well and have flawless intonations?

Two projects which work amazingly and have android applications for them too -

You can use these on pc too. For android you can try these out by going to the apk engine's website below and downloading the desired apk (there are a lot of them) - https://k2-fsa.github.io/sherpa/onnx/tts/apk-engine.html

If you feel it works well, go to Settings -> Accessibility -> Text-to-speech output and enable TTS Engine as the default.

Things are going really great for on-device tts.

My TTS engine isn't getting recognized by Voice Aloud Reader or Prestigio, or even Moon reader so these aren't options. Pocketbook didn't work either.

ReadEra does recognize my Microsoft TTS voice engine, but the free version won't let me turn off the screen and I'm not paying for a premium subscription.

So I'd love to get some suggestions. Thank you

I've been obsessed with voice input for years. I've used the following tools on my phone:

  1. AudioPen

I like it for quick recordings. I think it is a good one for initial practice with speech to text writing. You can change the writing output easily (voice, length, tone, format). I was an early adopter so I got great pricing for the premium version which is now $99 per year. I don’t like the 15 minute time limit and inability to record while switching between apps. https://audiopen.ai

2. Otter

Great for conversations, but you can use it on a monologue too. I’m using Otter to write a course with a group with our virtual meeting transcripts. Paid Otter Pro version is $16.99 per month. https://otter.ai

3. Ultimate Brain Voice Notes

This is my favorite. It integrates with my Notion because I use Thomas Frank’s Ultimate Brain system for Notion. Takes more initial setup, but it's glorious for reducing my administrative burden and digital overwhelm. All I have to do is hit record from my phone, and the transcription shows up in my Notion notes inbox with an AI generated title and even follow up items and a summary. $30 per month for a paid Pipedream account, plus about $0.40/hour for voice recordings. I’m constantly using it. https://thomasjfrank.com/how-to-transcribe-audio-to-text-with-chatgpt-and-notion/

4. Gboard - using it now to write this post by dictating in real time. I use it on my phone to write some texts, emails, etc.

I know I left out Dragon Nuance, the OG of dictation everyone says is the gold standard. I haven’t tried it yet. I think I might explore it next. $150 for year for Dragon Anywhere.

Any other favorite mobile speech-to-text apps you love for writing?

From a one time voracious text reader, then switching to audio over the years, I couldn’t return to text. Most likely due to the sensitivity smartphones have caused. So in the absence of any audio copies I’ve used iOS text to speech, REEDY and Podcast Addict apps (Android only), and various other ways to render text to audio.

Would like to hear any alternative mobile apps or technical workarounds others have tried. The ideal for me is just a near natural sounding voice with good pacing, pauses etc.
