Two twin XL mattresses put together make what's called a split king. The two twin XL are the same size as a standard king mattress and fit in any king size frame. My husband and I have this because we have an adjustable base. This allows us to raise/lower our heads and feet independent of each other. Doing this would also allow you to have different firmness in your mattresses. Adjustable base isn't necessary. Just make sure you're getting the same brand and model of mattress, or at least mattresses that are the same height, so one side of the bed isn't taller than the other. This is the only real way you're each going to get something that works for both of you in your situation. Also, if he hasn't already, please encourage your partner to get a sleep study done. If he's having sleep breathing issues he likely needs a CPAP machine. I put it off for a long time myself, but so glad I finally did it.
