Beds are made like crap now. After having 3 bed frames break in 3 years of normal use, I’m sick of it. What’s a bed frame that is durable, not extremely expensive (over around 1.5 grand) and will last?

First of all, If my "normal use" resulted in me breaking three bed frames in as many years, I'd hire a damn skywriter and commission a statue of myself. Can you tell me a little about what you liked about the previous bedframes you used? Were they platform or slats or? Is there any way you'd be able to Ron Swanson one? Making a basic wooden bed frame is pretty dang easy, even if you're not great with carpentry. We knocked one out in an afternoon.

Find a craftsman to build one. Not sure where you are but when I was in MA there was a great Mennonite shop and here in the midwest there are lots of Amish shops. Well built from high quality solid hardwood and it could last hundreds of years if taken care of.

For context, I build furniture as a hobby out of hardwood and structural steel using a blend of traditional joinery and modern techniques, and my partner is an interior designer who has access to trade-only pricing for most quality furniture stores. We have a bed frame from Room & Board, who does not offer trade pricing (i.e. we paid full price), and I wholeheartedly recommend Room & Board based on my experience with them. Here's why: They are honest about the materials going into their pieces. Most furniture sellers will market a product as “solid wood” and have you select a “color” like walnut, implying that you are getting furniture constructed from solid walnut, but then they actually send you something made of cheaper engineered wood with either a walnut veneer or a cheaper wood stained to look like what they think walnut looks like. Room & Board is up front about what they're using, and actually does use a lot of domestically produced hardwood lumber like walnut in their furniture, and they don't do it by cutting quality—I wouldn't be surprised if it's all FAS…definitely no #1C here. Their products are engineered and built to a higher standard than most furniture available at similar price points. Where others use light gauge mild steel to cut down on costs and expect to replace some percentage of units that fail, Room & Board frequently uses the same gauge material that I would select if I were building something for myself or a client. The weld beads I've seen look good and the surface finish around them doesn't show signs of excessive spatter (frequently found on cheaper products as a result of incorrect settings or poor technique). Their prices are are very affordable and I can honestly not compete with them. The retail material cost alone for many of their products is over half the price that Room & Board sell them for. Their white-glove shipping is professional, fast, and affordable. I don't normally spring for such things, and as someone who builds furniture from the raw materials, I am happy to do the work of assembling pre-produced pieces. But frequently Room & Board shipping is included in the price, and even when it isn't, it's less than I've paid DWR for a front-door drop-off on smaller items. Good luck and I hope you find something you love that will live long enough to be used by many others after you!
