[SOLVED] - Anyone recommend me the best setting for the fans? | Tom's Hardware Forum
April 12, 2022 - Are they set in BIOS to Voltage or PWM control ? For case fans it's not good to be tied to CPU temps or they might be to "jumpy", better to tie them to MB temperature. If BIOS lets you adjust speed curves, It's best to set straight line from temps at idle to few degrees before highest allowed temps.

Help with Bios fan settings. What to set?
Your pictures aren't displaying. I think you should definitely adjust your fan curves. What temp source should I use for each fan? Depends, but typically you'll want one intake dedicated to each of your major components, so CPU and GPU. If you don't do it this way, you'll risk creating unwanted pressure, potentially causing your CPU or GPU fans to work harder and intaking air where there isn't an intake fan. Your exhaust fan could be connected to motherboard Temp. DC fans can change speed the same as PWM fans, the difference being how they are implemented. DC fans increase and decrease the speed based on current alone, while PWM fans have a more or less constant power load but the PWM signal allows the fan to speed up and slow down according to whatever you might require. This makes the ramp time and fluctuating speed much faster, typically resulting in a fan being quieter more often You're right about everything else pretty much. Def use smart fan mode if you are able. More on reddit.com

Not sure how to configure things in BIOS to work the same. PWM or DC? CPU core, system or MOS for temperature source? Without smart fan mode enabled the PC is roaring louder than it ever has in game. Best way to set fan curves in light bios. My fans keep speeding up and down!
They removed the GUI for fan speed control but the functionality is all still there Here are the options Set smart fan to enabled. Set temp source to CPU or MOS coz the system temp stays fairly stable coz of the large heatsinks. Set the fans to DC or PWM. If you dont know what you have use DC. Set the 4 temp levels you want and then the 4 fan speeds you want (Voltage from 0-12 volts for DC fans. Percentage from 0-100 from PWM fans). I have the fans sit at 0% under 50c and step up to 100% when the MOS hits 60c. Do what works for you WRT to temps and fan noise. More on reddit.com

People also ask

Is it safe to change BIOS settings for gaming?
Yes, the settings in this guide are safe when applied correctly. Enabling XMP/EXPO and Resizable BAR carries minimal risk. More advanced features like PBO or MCE increase power consumption and heat but won't damage components if temperatures stay under control. Always monitor temps and test stability.

What's the best BIOS setting for maximum FPS?
There's no single "best" setting, but enabling XMP/EXPO has the highest impact-to-effort ratio. It takes 30 seconds and can boost FPS by 5-15%. After that, Resizable BAR (if supported) and platform-specific features like PBO (AMD) or MCE (Intel) provide additional gains. Always prioritize stability over maximum performance.

Do I need to update my BIOS?
If your system is stable and has the features you need, updates aren't mandatory. However, update if you're missing features like Resizable BAR support, experiencing bugs, or using a recently launched CPU. Never interrupt a BIOS update - use stable power, preferably with a UPS.

r/pcmasterrace on Reddit: Help with Bios fan settings. What to set?
May 27, 2025 -

I'm talking about case fans. I have 3 of them. 2 front intake, 1 top exhaust. They are all the same model PWM fan.

In pic # 1, that is the default setting. Smart Fan mode is not set. So what it appears to me is that when Smart Fan mode is unset, you can only set static values for the fans. So doesn't this mean the fan will spin at the same speed regardless of temperature changes in my PC. Is that correct?

In pic # 2, I just show that you can change the voltage (and therefore rpm) of the fan up to 12 V.

In pic # 3, I show what Smart Fan mode looks like. You can see that now we have a curve to play with. I am able to manipulate each of the 4 points on the curve.

You can see at the left there are settings. They are:

  • PWM or DC

  • Temperature Source. Options are: CPU, System, MOS, PCH, CPU socket

  • step up time. From 0.1 - 0.7s

  • step down time. From 0.1 - 1.0s

My Questions

  1. Should I have my fans set to Smart Fan mode? I'm wondering why this was not the default? And should all be set to that mode, or just some?

  2. If I do use SMart Fan mode, should I change this curve at all? Is it just about tinkering with it until you are happy with how it sounds and performs?

  3. I'm kinda confused about the difference between DC and PWM modes. I used to think that PWM fans can change speed while DC cannot. But know I know that DC can change speed, too. So what is the point of PWM, and should I have it selected?

  4. What temp source should I use for each fan? I was told most gamers choose GPU. But I don't have that as an option. "System" is the only one I don't where its measuring, do you know?

  5. What to set for set up and step down time?

Thanks for your help!

r/MSI_Gaming on Reddit: Best way to set fan curves in light bios. My fans keep speeding up and down!
August 4, 2019 -

I have a R5 3600 and a MSI R9 390, and I'm having trouble keeping my case cool while gaming. My R9 390 eventually caps out at 94C, and begins throttling. Keeping the fans at a fixed speed is obviously not working as it looks like my case overheats so I'm trying to set them at a variable speed using the BIOS.

I have tried to set up my fan settings using the light bios, but I'm having some issues. How do I get the fans from abruptly speeding up and down? I don't have 4 pin fans, so I'm using DC voltage to try to get the fans to spin faster at higher CPU temps, but maintain a low speed (~600 RPM) while browsing the internet. The sudden fan speed fluctuations while I'm browsing the internet are driving me insane. Maybe somebody can better explain how I can set this up using the light bios.

r/PCBaumeister on Reddit: Fan curve in the BIOS
January 23, 2025 -

Hi everyone, I've finished building my PC, it's running, and Windows 11 is installed.

Now the 9 fans are running at full speed, it's loud, the plants in the room are waving their leaves and I'll be cold shortly 😂.

I've already experimented a bit in the MSI BIOS. Fan curve etc. But honestly, I don't really know what's important. I have a 7800x3d and a Liquid Freezer III water cooling. 3 fans blow into the case and the rest out.

Can someone give me some tips or explain it for "dummies"? I've never done anything like this before.
