Look at used cameras. I got a nice set up with a 500mm lens for under $500 by being patient and looking on Craigslist and eBay. If I had paid for all the components new I would have paid at least three times that, if not four or five.

Hello! I am interested in saving up for a camera to use for bird photography. I don't need anything super high quality, mostly just something that can help me get okay quality far away photos for posting observations to inaturalist. It doesn't have to be super clear, just enough to tell that it's a bird pretty much. My budget is super low as I'm not in an outstanding financial situation right now. Like $200usd or less. "Your phone is your best bet" is a totally reasonable answer as I really don't know anything when it comes to cameras. Thanks in advance! Sorry for the sort of silly beginner question.

Wildlife photography is among the most gear-demanding types of photography. Your best bet for your budget would be to get an older DSLR crop sensor body (Canon 7D for example), and then the best telephoto lens you can find for your budget. The 7D is listed on eBay for $250 and is a good starter camera (although dated). You would then need to find a lens for it. You could get a manual telephoto lens (no auto focus) for a couple hundred dollars. Avoid some crazy zoom lens (20-200 for example) as it won't autofocus well, it won't let in a lot of light, and it won't be sharp. I believe this older setup is really the only alternative to your phone as you aren't getting anything made in the last 10 years with a telephoto lens for less than 1K that will be better for birding.

One option is used super zoom bridge camera. They weren’t good quality, similar to modern phone, but it will have a long telephoto lens which is what you need for birding.

i recently had my camera stolen and got an $800 payout from my insurance. i had been looking to upgrade from my sony rx100III for a bit and thisll have to be the opportunity. i love photographing animals, especially birds, so a good autofocus would be good. i do also travel a bit and do street photography, so having something i can put a pancake lens on and store in my pocket would also be nice, but i could also make a small bag for it so its not everything. id appreciate any suggestions

For $800, it will be very hard to find something that works both for birds and for travel/street photography. A used Nikon D7100 with an 18-55 (travel) and 100-400 (birds) would go for $800 on MPB and if you take a bigger 150-600 instead, it's still under $900. But it's not exactly particularly compact. If you want something under $900 that's specifically pocketable in travel configuration, look at a used Sony A6000, 16-50 (travel) and Tamron 70-300. The 70-300 is less powerful than the 100-400 and 150-600 you could get with the Nikon, but at least you're in a system that's still in use and could keep using your lenses if you upgrade to something like the A6700 later on. If you want a decent modern camera, the cheapest option is the Canon R50 (or the slightly more expensive R10) with the 18-45 (travel) and RF 100-400 (birds). It will be around $1500, but it's worth that money, the R50 is the cheapest body on the market with bird detection AF and the 100-400 has solid reach for it's relatively low price and weight.
