I prefer hardie. I left a couple pieces laying soaking on my deck over a Canadian winter and then put them back on the house in the spring. A little fragile at first, but now I can't tell which ones they were. Dust is an issue, and installation is big since you can put up full sheets with fewer breaks in the siding. Get a nibbler if dust is a big concern. Answer from Miserable_Warthog_42 on reddit.com

r/Carpentry on Reddit: Best product for board/batten siding: LP, TruWood, or Hardie?
August 9, 2024 -
Need to side my 12x16’ studio I’ve built myself. Applying on top of zip panels. Want a board and batten style.
I can’t find smooth LP panels, only textured. Though I’m told they’re available by some.
One place tells me they sell TruWood panels that are smooth, but I can’t find anything on TruWood’s website that says they offer it.
Then there’s Hardie Panels. I love the look but the increased cost, difficulty in pickup and installation (I,e., cant do it myself), and the dust makes me hesitant.
Can anyone help point me in the right direction? I have an 8’ rear wall and a lean to roof leading to a 10’ front wall if that’s important.

Fiber cement is no question the most durable siding product of this type. It's a bitch to work with however. My current project is smooth Hardie board and batt and the 10ft sheets used for most of the build weigh over 100 lbs a piece and they're only 5/16ths thick. And they break if you look at them funny which is probably the most difficult aspect of it As long as you wear a respirator while cutting it you're fine. Even an N95 is good enough if you ask me

Can't say I know if there's much of a difference in terms of price but we went with board and batten vinyl on our new construction and couldn't be happier. Horizontal vinyl to me is just plain and boring. We even went 2 tone (white and charcoal) which gives it a neat modern yet traditional look https://imgur.com/a/NU83d0Y More on reddit.com
Board and batten vinyl siding?
I have vinyl siding on my current house and hate it. Stuff cracks stupid easily in the cold. Accidentally kicked the corner trim on my garage one winter and cracked the crap out of it. Pain to replace that peice. Also a pain to attach anything to the house. I would take Hardie board over vinyl any day. More on reddit.com

Here the siding sits under the sub-fascia, except for battens obviously. Make sure to nail correctly based on width and I have great success tooling original Quad sealant down each side of the batten. The rough sawn lumber loves solid timber stain as opposed to painting.
