r/Stoicism on Reddit: Beginner books on logic and logical fallacies
March 11, 2022 -

Hey all, the title pretty much says it all! I was hoping someone would be able to provide a few good starting points on logic and logical fallacies. I had an (admittedly quick) skim through the library section and couldn't see anything specific to modern logic (which I'm assuming has derived and built up from stoic logic?). The more basic and beginner-friendly the better as much of what I've found feels wordy and convoluted (which is probably just a problem with me rather than the material itself.)

Cheers!

Beginner books on logic and logical fallacies
I would honestly recommend a few books from the modern rationalist movement. Logic and rational thinking has evolved a lot since the days of Aristotle, and also a lot since the basic theories of rhetoric and logical fallacies taught in classical university courses. The rationalists are an interesting group; not everyone agrees with their values but they have some of the best techniques out there for actually learning to make rationality and logic part of your daily thought process. Some recommendations: The Scout Mindset, by Julia Galef How to Actually Change Your Mind, and also The Sequences by Eliezer Yudkowsky Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, by Yudkowsky as well Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman And for more advanced reading, Reason and Persons, by Derek Parfit (widely considered one of the most important books on ethics in the last century) More on reddit.com

What's a good book on logical fallacies?

Hello,

Not the Fallacy Fallacy here.

Thought I should remind everyone that just because someone is a culprit of a fallacy, doesn't mean it's untrue! It just means there is a lack of logical evidence to support their claim.

I haven't read a book on it yet. I'm just an avid mnemonist in training. I also suggest https://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/, just as u/thomasgroendal did.

"If I have learned anything in ten years of formal debating, it is that arguments are no different: without a good understanding of the rules and tactics, you are likely to do poorly and be beaten."―HENRY ZHANG, President of the Yale Debate AssociationYour argument is valid and you know it; yet once again you find yourself leaving a debate feeling defeated and embarrassed. The matter is only made worse when you realize that your defeat came at the hands of someone's abuse of logic―and that with the right skills you could have won the argument. The ability to recognize logical fallacies when the
