I know we're all skeptical about Wirecutter, and I'm doubly skeptical that all of their top printer, laser printer, and scanner suggestions are HP. I've had enough personal experience with HP and seen enough comments here to know... never again.

The main mention here in BIFL always appears to be Brother. I know printers aren't really BIFL by definition, but I was hoping for some recommendations.

I don't need to print often, but I don't want a printer that's going to be a PITA with ink replacements or drying out. I was thinking of a laser printer this time around, and ideally one that can also scan documents.

Are most of my options going to be black and white only? Does anyone have a personal recommendation?

Hi, I hate my HP, so so much and I need a new one.

I went with Brother printers since they are apperently immortal and I've only heard good things about them.

Some features that are important to me are:

• be a laser printer

• solid B&W printing

• have a scanner

• wireless connectivity

The MFC-L2835DW seems like a good choice but is quite expensive for me, being a lowly college student with not many funds to my name.

So I wanted to check if maybe someone has a cheaper alternative.

I know Brother brand is good for its color laser all in ones, but what about its inket series that are smaller and cheaper? Do they use a lot of inks and even let you use third party inks?

I’ve been using the Brother MFC-J4335DW as my go-to home printer, and it’s been a solid workhorse for everything from school assignments to scanning and copying documents. Print quality is consistently sharp, especially for black-and-white documents, and while color output isn’t the most vibrant I’ve seen, it’s definitely good enough for casual photo prints or charts. It’s fast, too, no waiting around forever to get a couple pages out. I have a HP inkjet all in one printer and it’s stopped working, hates it anyway.

I’ve been recommended to get a brother laser, only need b+w print, but I need a scanner too, which one is going to be best, don’t want to repeat the subscription problems of HP again!

Tired of my HP constantly eating through ink cartridges on every print job, not to mention the cloud-connected nonsense. Are Brother color laser printers (with scanner bed) still the best solution for me? I want the big capacity of toner cartridges, and not the silly cloud connectedness.

Im currently in the market to find a good all-in-one printer.

I'm extremely frustrated and done with HP. They locked my printer because I unsubcribed to their ink plan and they refuse to let me print and keep trying to upsell me on crap I dont need.

I would please prefer a brother printer. Ive heard lots of good things about this brand and would like to give it a try. Im pretty felxable but requirements that im looking for is double sided printing, scan to email, and good photo quality so I can print some cool detailed stickers eventually. Any recommendations? This is for my parents who are older. I’m looking to purchase an all in one printer. The hinge on our current one broke, so the top is not sealing properly and causing black streaks when making copies (open to ideas on how to fix this too).

We only use it a couple times a month at most. The internet says a laser printer is ideal in that case, but we haven’t dealt with our ink cartridges drying out. There are so many options out there, it’s a bit overwhelming. Sites recommend the same HP printers over and over, but I’m hearing various things about HP handles ink cartridges.

So I'm in the market for a new printer. And as everyone says I just want shit to work. I'm gona sound like a boomer but, I don't need an app, I don't need ANY subscription service (fuck you HP), and I need to print both over the network (wifi not hardline) and by physical hook up. I want to buy a budget Brother printer for home use. It's fine that printer only has black and white. I've read on Reddit that Brother makes the best printers. I would appreciate some suggestions, which Brother printer would be ideal, for around 140-150$ or less.

So I'm ready to trash my POS Canon MF 4350. Constantly jamming, low quality scans, and such poor design that clearing jams, it can kill two hours easily.

If you're wondering how to choose the right printer for your home use needs, these tips may help you. It’s the same way that you’d decide for corporate or business use.

Determine your use case.

-What type of printing do you need/want to do? (Color, B/W, Text, Images, paper sizes, paper types)

-How much (volume)?

-How often (frequency of use)?

-What interface? (Ethernet, WiFi, USB, other)

-What OS(s) will you be using on the hosts? (this is less of an issue these days, but worth checking if non-Windows is a priority)

-How much are you willing to spend? (Up-front for the printer For supplies/toner/ink/etc.)

- What extra features do you need or want? (Extra paper trays, straight through feeds for card stock or envelopes, oversize paper handling, Fax/Scan/Copy

Do your homework.

Consider the pattern of usage and think about the right printer for the job. A lot of people will immediately jump on the Inkjet bandwagon, but if your printer will be turned off or on standby for weeks at a time, the heads can get clogged with dry ink. It *might* make more sense to consider a color inkjet (though one that can use aftermarket toner). Lasers are much more tolerant of being worked hard and then sitting unused for weeks or months. Inkjets are better for occasional, but regular use. (a lesson I learned by killing quite a few inkjets over the years).

When I purchased mine I also considered these other things important to me roughly in highest to lowest priority order…

- Ability to print on both sides of paper. There’s nothing more wasteful than using only one side of each piece of paper.

- Print speed. I wanted a printer that could crank out a 100 page report fairly quickly.

- I wanted the printer to operate off a wired internet connection. I use wireless but I'd rather save that for my mobile connections. The printer I use supports either.

-Self updating. If the printer needs updates it applies these by itself.

-Remote printing. I can send a document to the printer (it has its own email address) and it will print. No need to look for a fax machine for this purpose.
