How much ram do you actually need because you can easily get into AM5 at $500 and have better performance than what you had. At this point it’s down to the ram and chipset needs and whatever is left over can go towards cpu. More on reddit.com

Why not use a SATA SSD? It'll still give a noticeable increase in speed over a HDD, and will be more cost effective than buying a new board and the SSD (assuming you don't want to repurpose your external one to be your new internal one). As for board, mostly anything with an M.2 will be fine if you're on a budget. Doesn't need to be the latest gaming this/RGB that board. I'm running on a B550 Tomahawk and it's been a fine board. Depending on your CPU there will be cheaper B450/B550 boards out there that'll do the job just fine. More on reddit.com

At one time, AMD called their AM4 socket the most flexible platform in x86 history. This is because the chipset has been supported for quite a while now. This is not something we see in the CPU space these days, and especially not with Intel. However, Zen 3 or Ryzen 5000 is likely the last series of processors based on the AM4 platform. Further down the line, we can expect to see a new socket/platform with DDR5 support. That is nothing to worry about right now, as we have great choices available today.

To answer this question plainly, yes B550 is a better chipset than B450. The real question is if it is worth upgrading to a B550 motherboard or choosing it over a B450 board. For most people, our answer would be no. While B550 gives you PCIe Gen 4 and more PCIe lanes, there’s not much more it has to offer. Sure, the wired network speed is better with some models, but that’s about it. B550 is likely also the last chipset on the AM4 platform, so that’s something to keep in mind if you care about futureproofing.

Since you said try for Wi-Fi and you are using the R5 5500 which is only PCIe 3.0 capable you could go with a 400vseries Motherboard as well. Most of them come with a BIOS Flashback feature, and tbh I think that they now ship with the correct BIOS for 5000 chips, as well.

My motherboard/CPU died and I need replacements, but I’m on a tight budget and don’t have enough to change my RAM, so AM5 is out. That’s fine — I plan to upgrade in about a year — I just need my PC to work for another year for coding, video editing and 3D modeling. I had a B450 Tomahawk Max with a Ryzen 5 3600. I’ve got roughly $500 and need the cheapest motherboard + CPU combo possible that’s at least as fast as the R5 3600. I also need a board with two M.2 slots. Any suggestions?
Is there a way to upgrade to am5 within budget and with new mobo, cpu and ram thats better than r5 3600 and 16gb ram? Prob not right?
So any am4 suggestions would be appreciated

Are you in the US ? For 500$, don't go Am4, pickup some good used AM5 hardware over at R/hardwareswap. Ryzen 5 7600x $140 B650 motherboard $100 32gb ddr5 6000mhz $75 Total: 315 This is standard pricing for a basic AM5 setup on R/hardwareswap Sell the ddr4 ram after Pm if you want help navigating this.

I’m trying to get a new mother board to put my ssd in so I can get faster speeds because currently I have a old motherboard with a hard drive as a boot with very minimal storage in the boot and my 2tb ssd as a external. My ssd is quite fast but I belive the reason my games and pc runs so slow is because of my current rig not allowing for my ssd to be inside the motherboard board and be the boot drive
