I've tried two brands now that were terribly scratchy. I look at the reviews for everything I'm recommended. Target Threshold, Casaluna, Macys, JCPenney. I check them all and all the recent reviews say the quality has declined drastically.. is there anything less than $100 that doesn't say scratchy or drastic drop in quality? I would try Sateen but it's very hot where I live

If they are 100% Egyptian or Supima cotton, the more you wash them the softer they will get. I typically wash mine at least two or three times before I put them on the bed. And as others have said, no fabric softener or dryer sheets, use use vinegar in the wash, and I use those wool balls.

The best percales are by far the high end ones from heritage linen companies like sferra. You arent going to get the cream of the crop in your budget but if you are willing to take your time and monitor ebay regularly you could get a very very nice sheet set from one of those brands for under $400. Alternatively a simpler solution is the hudson park and/or hotel collection italian percale (think its the same product sold by both brands).
