So I just applied for the best buy credit card and got this message, " Thanks for your application. Please call Citibank N.A. using the numbers below to provide a few more details and receive a decision." So I called the number and provided the information. The representative said I just needed to verify my home address and phone number, so he sent a text to my phone and then told me "congratulations you're approved for the Citi Visa Credit Card with a starting limit of $4,000." I said thanks and hung up. Then my computer screen refreshed and it shows I was approved for the "best buy store card" and not the visa like I was told.
I'm not too upset about this, however I am confused. I tried calling best buy credit card customer service and they said that they only see I was approved. They said I'd have to go to a best buy store in person and see if it's actually the visa or just the store card version. And if it was the store card, I'd have to apply again for the visa version, but there's no guarantee I'd be approved for the upgrade. I was also told it could result in another hard pull on my credit report.
Has this happened to anyone else? I mean I didn't plan on spending the card outside of Best Buy, but I don't like being told I was approved for the visa when I apparently wasn't.
So my gf and I applied for a credit card through best buy a few days ago. It said instant approval, granted I should have looked into it more and saw this is commonplace instant approvals are not the norm. (Thanks for that advertising Best Buy) none the less credit score is 666, now 663 after credit inquiry. So I know there's a application. It said they will get back with a approval in 3 weeks.. I have never heard of anything other than a denial if it takes that long. I see you can check if your approved or denied with a few different phone numbers to Citibank and best buy credit card center. But ALL of them require a "application number" to check the status. Checked our emails, there is no such application number. So....yeah not sure how to check the status if you only can with a application number. We did our social security numbers instead but it says there is no account associated....which makes sense because there is no account yet...so... if I can't use my social because there is no account...and there is no application number for the application... how does one figure this information out? Pretty confusing. I know I can't be the only one to have wanted to know this information sooner than 3 weeks after deciding what I wanted to purchase only to be stuck with no way of knowing a result with a rather decent score and income.
