Hey everyone, I could use some advice on how to resolve this ongoing issue with Best Buy and my credit card.

Here's the situation:

  • I made a purchase at Best Buy and applied for a Best Buy credit card during checkout. The application was approved, and I completed the purchase.

  • I was supposed to receive 10% back in rewards, but I only got 5%.

  • When my card arrived, I noticed the membership ID on the back of the card was different from my Best Buy account.

  • I contacted Best Buy support to resolve the issue of the card not being linked to my account and to get the missing rewards. They created a support case and promised a resolution within 2-3 days.

  • It's been over a week with no progress. When I called back, they created a new support case, but still, nothing has been fixed.

  • Another issue now is that because my card isn’t linked to my membership ID, my account shows I’m not eligible for any ongoing credit card promotions.

Has anyone else faced this issue? My main concerns are:

  1. Getting the card linked to my membership ID so that I'm eligible for current promotions.

  2. Getting the missing 10% rewards applied to my account.

Would visiting a Best Buy store help, or should I keep pushing through customer support? Any advice on how to escalate this would be greatly appreciated!

If you haven't done so already, you might try calling Best Buy at 888-237-8289, available 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM Central Daylight Time (CDT) about merging the two memberships into your old membership number and linking your Citibank card to that number. Once that's done, hopefully Citibank will reissue your credit card with the correct membership number on it but we're still in the middle of this process so not sure of the steps. The situation with my husband and me was different, but after multiple instances of wrong info and finger pointing between the store, the online Best Buy phone reps and Citibank, calling the number above gave us the best results. For us, the rewards certificates from my husband opening a Best Buy card were showing up on the Citibank site but not on my Best Buy membership which we used to make the TV purchase. We realized right away that the mismatch in names between the membership and credit card would cause problems (and I was fine with replacing my name with my husband's on the membership as I rarely shop there) but got lots of bad advice about how to fix. It was frustrating as we could see the reward certificates, but couldn't apply them to an online purchase when logged into my online account. The prompts on the phone line above were confusing but we eventually spoke to someone knowledgeable who said we needed to merge two memberships. We didn't even realize there was a second membership number (never thought to look at the back of the card until you mentioned it in your post); now it seems clear that applying for the credit card generated a new membership number in my husband's name. Anyway, the rep on the phone line above had me login and update my membership to my husband's name (didn't realize I could do that myself), as the names on both memberships need to match, then she submitted the request to have the two memberships merged so that we'll end up with just the old member number. This apparently takes 3-4 days so we're still waiting for the email; we're assuming the credit card will then be hooked to that membership but we'll see whether we have to request that separately.
