Hello, my mother in law is visiting from the Caribbean. She has decided she would like to upgrade phones while state side. Looks like it’s gonna be a IPhone 14 or 14 pro. I see that best buy has some deals for unlocked. Wanted to touch base here and verify if those are truly fully unlocked. I don’t want to send her back home only to find out it wasn’t internationally unlocked

Phones from Best Buy are locked to whatever carrier’s sim you add to it. They say unlocked because you can buy one for any carrier, but as soon as you add a SIM card to it, it’s locked to that network. After 40 days you can request an unlock (depending on carrier, the device may have to be fully paid off before they’ll unlock it). Get one from Apple if you need it truly unlocked.

Ever since the 14 bb stopped selling unlocked, but carrier locked. Please make sure the post says UNLOCKED. Once bought you can go to SETTINGS --> GENERAL --> ABOUT and you will see a section that says CARRIER LOCKED the option should read NO SIM RESTRICTIONS that;'s the indicator that it can be used anywhere. if it doesn't say that take it back and get a refund. Also keep in mind that some carriers in the Caribbean do not support ESIM yet so might be worth checking that out before making the expense so she doesn't have issues on the way back.

Hi all, I tried searching but doesn't seem like this has been asked recently. I have an iPhone SE 2020 with 64gb bought for cheap when I had Straight Talk and later unlocked, but it's starting to slow down and for me the 64gb storage is a big limiting factor. I'm trying to decide between getting an unlocked SE 2020 with 128gb, or an unlocked SE 2022 with 128gb, and leaning towards the newer model...but from where? I'm fine buying used/refurbished if the phone and battery are in good condition. I bought my original SE years ago through Swappa but their SE 2022 selection is pretty slim. Any tips would be appreciated!

The only way you can get an unlocked iPhone 15, is by purchasing it directly thru Apple. Otherwise, you’ll have to buy it thru a carrier.

Best Buy does not have unlocked versions of the iPhone 15 series, if you pay in full activated on a carrier in 2 months you can get the device unlocked from the carrier if you call into their customer service

I read a bunch of posts here warning against purchasing unlocked iphones from Best Buy because they'd get locked to the first carrier they're connected to, but I confirmed with Best Buy that this is not the case. A Mint Mobile rep also confirmed that they could unlock the phone on their end should I decide to switch carriers.

Why don't you just buy an iPhone from Apple? Best Buy has sold iPhones with a Flex Lock Policy for years. Yes they are initially "unlocked" but will then lock to the first carrier you subscribe to. Now you have a "confirmation" from an Anonymous Best Buy Live Agent that provides a "guarantee"? Good luck holding them to that if you find out differently after your purchase.

I always buy my devices from samsung.com. Except for the one time I decided to buy a Samsung tablet from Best Buy. Lo and behold, the batch of tablets they had in-store all had corporate MDM software and were locked to Deloitte (the Big 4 accounting firm). It said so on the setup screen and required a Deloitte Microsoft work email account to setup. The manager tried to get me different ones but the entire batch had the same lock. It was clearly a shipping inventory mistake (Deloitte has a large office in our city). Despite it being obvious that they had accidentally stocked tablets meant for a corporate customer, and it being written in plain English on the setup screen, the manager refused to acknowledge the issue and kept trying different tablets. He didn't believe what he was saying, I could see it in his face, but he was just repeating it like a corporate robot. They are not allowed to use common sense when something goes wrong, because the Best Buy HQ policy says nothing goes wrong. They are all drones, so nothing they say has any value. I have never set foot in a Best Buy ever again, and I never will. Buy the phone at your own peril.
