I used to work there. People usually return items in mint/great condition because of all types of reasons. Couldnt afford it, impulse purchase, wife didnt approve purchase, you name it. It still comes with the same exact warranty and return policy as new items, if it saves you money go for it.

Buy it, test it and if anything’s wrong, return it! “Excellent” is usually brand new-ish!

The new 2023 model is open box in "excellent condition" near me for $1760 - so, basically $200 off retail (I could get it brand new @ Costco for $1949).
I'm wondering if $200 in savings is worth the gamble that no damage was done to it. I feel like most likely it was a customer return that may not have even gotten much usage, but just curious if anyone had any input or opinions on whether it's worth the gamble for that amount of savings, or if I should just buy it new from Costco?

I’ve always had good luck with the Apple Certified Refurbished Store . It depends what they have in stock, but it’s a nice savings for basically indistinguishable from new products. I’ve bought other things from Best Buy open box (Apple Watches, HomePods) without issue.

The open box might be a used MBP - in any case, it is usually an item that was previously purchased and returned. In such cases, it usually means that the warranty coverage had already expired. You will need to contact Apple and supply the purchase date/proof and check with them.

Well, it is entirely possible - since Apple starts the warranty when it is shipped and if it sits on the shelf for some time, it can happen (I know because it happened to me at another retailer once) - I had to prove my purchase date and the warranty was adjusted. During the conversations, I found out that the unit had been shipped 13 months ago.
