Is it a regular warranty period or only 90 days? If you get a regular warranty, that's a bonus. Not sure where you live, but I'd check my local craigslist or maybe Facebook market place, you can sometimes find great deals and a used laptop that still has warranty (assuming it's transferrable). If it was me, and the warranty was only 90 days, I'd also be checking the used market. Full warranty, I'd give serious consideration to the refurbished model, as long as the price was great. Cheers! I don't see any issues from a purchase\consumer side. You have a 30 day return period and 1 year warranty. Might also be worth checking with your credit card if you get an extra year warranty (not sure if it applies to refurbs). I bought a refurbed S10 from Best Buy years ago... she worked fine and no issues during the 4 years I used it. As for if it is good value, I am not really in tune with current laptop market. Honestly, I'd avoid Best Buy if you're planning on buying a refurb. Anything from Best Buy directly is marketed as "Open Box" rather than refurbished, anything you might see on their website that's a refurb is almost always a third-party retailer, meaning they not only come in some pretty rough condition sometimes, but they're also not entirely backed by Best Buy and you're usually left contacting the seller themselves to dispute any problems or get a refund issued if the product isn't up to your standards or is just plain faulty, which happens a non-negligible amount of time. And can usually take months to get things resolved if the seller is even willing to resolve them at all. As for Best Buy's in-store "Open Box" models, some of them are just that, a product that was purchased, opened and used for a short time and then returned by another customer because it just plain wasn't what they were looking for, and other times it was a legitimate hardware/software issue that needed to be repaired, either in-store by Geek Squad or sent out to a repair warehouse to have legitimate work done on it. The worst part is, as employees, you only know what's written in the notes on the Open Box tag, which is almost always incorrect, rushed and a quick one-line answer like "hardware issue" so you never truly know why the product was returned or worked on. And to top it all off, Open Box Policy there is typically 5-10% off retail value, so you're not even really saving that much money for a potentially troublesome device. Worse yet, even with something bought directly from Best Buy, they sometimes make you contact 1-800-GEEKSQUAD for repairs, replacements or refunds depending on which manager you talk to and how they're feeling that day, which can also take weeks to rectify. Overall, the thousands of vectors for potential headaches aren't worth the small amount you save on the original price. The number of repairs and returns of Open Box/refurbished items I've seen would probably make me recommend avoiding refurbs altogether, unless you find a truly amazing deal like 50% off MSRP or something.
