"Entry level" can mean a lot of things ($50? $150? $500?) but the Sennheiser MKE 600 is a a mic that punches well above its weight (compared to the performance and prices of top tier microphones). A shotgun mic is not suitable for all situations, but this is, in my experience, a fantastic microphone that can serve as both a great boom mic and a great on-camera mic. I bought one when I started doing video work and it is easily among my most-used pieces of kit, even with having added several other mics over the years (but FWIW I am not a dedicated sound person, although I do run sound on projects as needed). For someone just starting out you could very easily get by with this mic and a Zoom F3 (and a boom operator who knows what they're doing).

Hi there, I am looking for a good on camera mic for run and gun video with my gh5. I am not sure wether to get a video mic pro or similar OR get an XLR capable pre amp and attach a rode NTG 1 or NTG 2 shot gun mic.

DPA has a new shotgun mic. Rode makes a good mic too. Sennheiser is worth looking at too. The longer the disrupter tube the more focused the polar pattern will be, and the more isolation you can get. When you look at the specs of a mic, you should be able to find the frequency response curve and polar plot. I’ve used the Rode Video mic, and for gathering just general nat sound it’s ok.
