In other words, which of the following two statements better describes your situation? $800 should cover everything I need for years to come, until the camera breaks down (which really shouldn't happen in ten years of normal use). $800 is just for a kit to start with, and I'll be comfortable spending more over time, mostly on additional lenses. If you want phones which you can handle with one hand, your options are going to be limited. Here's my list (not in order of recommendation): Pixel 8 or 9. If you want good photos, you can't go wrong with a Pixel. However, portraits and videography is rather poor. CPU isn't the best but should be enough for your case. No zoom lens though. Clean Android experience, probably the closest alternative to the iPhone, especially the 9. Galaxy S23 or 24. Samsung Galaxies are all-rounders, can't go wrong with them. Despite being compact, they do come with a 3x lens. Portraits and videography are closer to the iPhone, but still not a match. If you want to experience the customisability of Android, Samsung's OneUI is the way to go. Lots of additional features too, like cloning apps. Sony Xperia 5 V. No zoom lens either, but Sony has the last Android flagships that come with headphone jack, SD card expansion and shutter button (kinda like Apple's antithesis). Xperia behaves more like a camera than a phone, it's very niche but definitely unique, so it's not gonna be everyone's cup of tea. Probably has the longest lasting battery out of the bunch. As close to stock Android as you can get (even more barebones than a Pixel), but due to this it's also not gonna be as feature-rich. Do note that compact phones are never gonna match the battery life and specs of their ultra-premium counterparts. Set your expectations right and you'll find your new phone a lot more enjoyable.
