What's the best carpet for allergies? - Home and Garden
March 8, 2023 - Allergens sink into the carpet and out of the air, but clean as often as you like, they're still down there and they circulate. Hard floor coverings offer no haven for allergies -- they just sit on the surface. They're easier to clean than carpets -- a simple sweep and vacuum quickly gets rid of allergens.

Guide to Hypoallergenic Carpets | Flooring America
July 2, 2025 - While it’s not as durable as nylon, polyester is resistant to mold, mildew, and stains, which helps maintain a clean and allergy-friendly home. Its hypoallergenic properties reduce the risk of triggering allergies, offering peace of mind for families seeking a budget-friendly, low-maintenance carpet option. If you struggle with allergies, plush carpets might not be the best choice for your home. Their long, soft fibers can trap allergens like dust, pet dander, and pollen, creating a breeding ground for triggers that worsen allergy symptoms.

r/Flooring on Reddit: Nylon or Polyester Carpet for Allergy Sufferer
October 6, 2024 -

I am shopping for new carpeting for my bedrooms. Although I have been told to install hardwood or LVP since I have bad allergies, I still desire carpeting for my bedrooms.

The carpet store if pushing Anderson Tuftex manufactured by Shaw in polyester. They suggested either 100% Anso High Performance SD PET or 100% SD PET Polyester.

I had heard that nylon is the best fiber for wearability and had initially thought it would be my choice. Will I be making a mistake going with the polyester due to my allergies? I, however, don't want matted carpet in a year or two which someone mentioned as a possibility on a different reddit posting when using polyester. It is only my husband and I, no children or pets.

Thanks in advance for any comments!

What is the best hypoallergenic carpet? - Sargeant Carpets
June 17, 2022 - Allergens can be found all over your home, including in soft furnishings, bedding and pillows, on pets and even in stuffed toys. Although hard wood, vinyl, laminate, cork and tiled floors are in theory low-risk in terms of allergens, they can still contain VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds, which are chemicals that can trigger allergies) and also need to be kept spotlessly clean to avoid triggering an attack. Therefore, carpets may not seem like the obvious choice if you’re looking for hypoallergenic flooring but if you choose the right type of carpet then you can minimise the impact it will have on air quality.

January 1, 2011 - The least effective are wool because allergens and mold thrive there. In addition, shag carpeting should be avoided because the shorter the strands the less area there is for particles to be trapped in. Similarly, more tightly woven strands are also better at keeping allergens away. Furthermore, it’s important to purchase carpeting with a low VOC level to ensure your home is safe of toxic emissions which, aside from more serious health issues, can also cause allergic reactions.
