Very long-term thrift shopper here - a general observation is that the deals are no longer what they once were. Many/most thrift stores used to be run by older volunteers. After COVID, things have changed and many had to hire employees and prices have increased accordingly. Also, many have become more savvy with the advent of the Internet and eBay. You can still find the occasional sweet deal, but it ain't what it once was. YMMV, but it's not worth the effort for hidden treasures. Even mundane housewares are pricier.

village discount, there are a few locations in the city. this is true thrifting, so good if you enjoy the hunt. if you want more curated vintage, walking down milwaukee from wicker park to avondale you’ll hit a ton. lost girls, vintage thrills, monarch and gem collective are all good!

Start at Clark & Ainslie and make your way north along Clark St. Standard thrift shops: Village Discount, Brown Elephant (proceeds benefit queer healthcare) Antiques/curios/oddities: Andersonville Antiques, Mercantile M, Wooly Mammoth Clothing consignment: Buffalo Exchange, Andersonville Antiques (for vintage clothing) Used media: Uncharted Books, Rattleback Records Not secondhand shops, but worth checking out: Andersonville Galleria (art market), Women and Children First (feminist bookstore), Foursided (art/gift shop), Gethsemane (plant nursery/garden store), Paper and Pencil (stationery) Also a little over a mile away is Broadway Antique Market, one of the largest (edit: THE largest) antique shops in the city. Just north of there is another nice thrift called Green Element Resale. If you keep heading north on Broadway/sheridan past the Loyola campus, there's a great used bookstore called Armadillo's Pillow. By that point you'd be pretty far up on the north side, though.

every single village discount in the city. they even used to have select 50% off weekends during certain holidays before covid but they scrapped that more than likely to recoup losses. i felt like macklemore walking in with a 20 and leaving with a full garbage bag full of stuff

The goodwill on fair oaks in Pasadena has a little thrifting Bermuda triangle going with Salvation Army right across the block on Del Mar and then Salv army has a smaller separate shop behind the big one that’s a “hand picked” shop so it’s nicer items but higher price. So it’s nice to hit those 3 quickly.
