Here's the thing: between the two, ode does a lot better with immersion methods and since you're going down the french press route it's the better option, for espresso or a pour over tho you literally cant go any better than a mini lagom. And if you use something around the 8-10 setting on the dial with the ode, you'll get a fine grind without a mix of those boulders that the cheaper grinders usually give at coarser levels. Plus this somehow removes the sludge-y thing at the bottom of the brewed cup and the slight bitterness. I'm personally really icked off by both of those things so probably my fav thing with this one. The only issue tho is is the voltage limitation (110v or 220v, not both) so you might have to look into it if you frequently travel and take the thing with you. This post I bookmarked some time ago might help you in figuring it out too. OP doesn't go in much detail but gives a good general overview of what works and what doesn't. r/JamesHoffmann on Reddit: best grinder for French press?
February 13, 2022 -

I'm new to manually making my coffee, coming from a Nespresso system previously. I settled on using a French Press to start.

What would be the best grinder for that? I researched it a bit, and it seems some people claim the coarser grind is not as demanding on the grinder but others claim that on coarser settings on cheaper grinders produce a mixture of large and small grinds, which ruin the flavor.

I'm looking at:

Fellow Ode:

+ pretty;

+ popular, so people can consult on grind settings;

- 110v OR 220v (I may move to a different country)

Option-O Lagom Mini

+pretty

+110v AND 220v

- not as good as the Ode at immersion brewing?

- cannot be upgraded later (eg SSP burr)

Hand Grinder?

EDIT: I forgot to mention that (1) I mostly just brew one cup at a time, so the smallness of some grinders such as the Lagom Mini and some other hand grinders aren't important to me; and (2) I bought a random WMF grinder (https://www.wmfnordic.com/products/small-appliances/coffee-and-espresso/coffee-grinders/stelio-coffee-grinder-edition-3200000107.html) at a local store for about $47USD. The coffee I made with it hasn't tasted very good, though I'm unsure if that's due to the beans (Member's Mark Columbia Medium Roast), my technique with the French Press (followed James's advise to the T), or some other factor. That's why I'm thinking about a new grinder

this is prob the last thread im checking out before making a choice myself. ive been falling down this stupid hole of choosing a grinder now and atp i think ill just pull the gun on a baratza encore. it's also pretty liked on other threads id recc anyone else wasting their time going through a 100 different threads to just pick one out of the first 5 threads you see or just go to a website like reddit vetted which picks products out of threads itself. it's better than wasting time endlessly searching ๐Ÿ™

r/Coffee on Reddit: Does Grinder Quality Matter That Much for French Press?
September 25, 2025 -

I'm a coffee noob, have only been doing French Press and will probably stick with this for a while. Maybe try pour over someday. No plans to go down the espresso hole (haha, famous last words?).

I have a cheapo manual grinder and for awhile it seemed ok (I was ignorant and I'm still trying to perfect my coffee). I use medium roast and was grinding coarse.

Then I saw the James Hoffmann video and tried a finer grind, but couldn't get it to taste right at all. I did notice there were a lot more fines and thought maybe that's what messed it up for me? I read that a good grinder would fix that problem. But I read someone else say that it doesn't matter that much for French Press. Especially at a coarser grind.

So I clearly need some advice.

If I need a better grinder, I'm considering something like a Timemore C2, but would possibly move up to the Kingrinder k6 if you think it would make much difference.

Update: Thanks for all the feedback. I just snagged a Timemore C3S on a flash sale, $65. Ever learning, glad I found this community!
