Wirecutter (see link below) recommends the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP. But, I’ve heard a lot of complaints about HP printers from others in this community.

https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-laser-printer/

I’ve heard good things about Brother in general, but am looking to hear some recommendations about a few I’ve specifically had my eye on:

  1. HL-L3290CDW (Doesn’t look like this has a feeder that would allow for scanning multiple pages at a time. It’s not a must-have for me but could be nice)

https://www.brother-usa.com/products/hll3290cdw

2. MFC-L3750CDW

3. HL-L8360CDW (Doesn’t even look like it has a scanner)

https://www.brother-usa.com/products/HLL8360CDW

4. MFC-L8905CDW

Also open to other suggestions whether they are other Brother printers or not! Here’s a link to the list of all Brother color laser printers:

r/printers on Reddit: Which color laser printer to buy for occasional/rare use?

I know I hear a lot about Brother laser printers but are they the best option for rare to occasional use? I just want something simple that I can count on to work for the times I do need it, and strongly prefer it to be color. I don't need any bells and whistles.

I was looking at this one because it seems to be basically the least expensive option HL-L3220CDW but there's a specific Amazon review that is worrying. (The review is for HL-L3210CW so not sure if that variation makes a difference). The review states that the printer locked him out because the printer thinks the black toner is empty, even though it's not empty. It won't even allow him to print in color and there is apparently no way to manually reset the toner status on this printer, unlike previous versions.

r/printers on Reddit: Color laser printer, is HP the best?
December 11, 2023 -

Husband wants a color laser printer for Christmas. Color printers piss me off and we have a monotone laser currently that works great. From my research Brother seems to be the better out of the printer company game, but not necessarily the best quality.

Budget: under 400, but flexible if necessary

Country: USA

Color or black and white: Color

Laser or ink printer: Laser

New or used: new

Multi-function: not required, but would be nice to have a scanner.

Duplex Printing: required

Home or business: home Printing content: game cards, pictures (I know laser isn’t the best for pictures)

Printing frequency: once a year to monthly?

Pages per minute : not a concern

Page size: regular Device printing from: computer

Connection type: WiFi

Any other details:

My husband wants to make games, he made one for my BIL for Christmas and wants to have a color printer so he doesn’t have to use fedex. He also wants to print pictures. I told him laser wasn’t the best option for that, and he said to not worry about it 🤷🏻‍♀️. I keep hearing HP has good color printers, but have also heard how much of a pain HP printers can be. Please help me decide. I’m ready to buy a brother, just because, but I’m not sure it’s going to be what he wants.

Thank you in advance

Hi all,

I am in the market for a great printer. My print frequency is 10-20 pages per day / 365. I've bought most brands but it seems they all kinda fail quicker. Any suggestions?!

Doesn’t get much better than a Brother B/W Laser Printer. A vast majority of people agree. Just pick one. Do your homework though and look at the specifics. Tray Capacity, PPM, Wireless vs USB, and whether it’s important to you that it prints on both sides of the paper to cut down on paper cost. I personally went with a multi function Brother B/W Laser Printer with auto feed scanner that can scan both sides of the paper because I scan a bit and that makes it much more convenient for me that way as well as fax. If you scan based on what I saw it makes sense to combine these functions. That and take a look at the toner cartridges just to see how much those will cost you and which sizes it will take. Mine is big enough that the highest capacity toner cartridges will print an estimated 8500 pages and save a bit a money that way as well. I personally don’t buy the generic toner and only the Brother toner cartridges so from what I’ve seen Office Depot often has deals on toner.

I've been very happy with my Brother lasers. I have an old B/W that has been chuging along for well over 15 years. I bought their color laser multi-fuction duplex two years ago as an upgrade. It's awesome. The dual side scanning is so easy. The printing is great. We love the wireless printing from any device in the house. It doesn't do a good job printing photos. But on the other hand, we don't use photo paper, and it isn't a photo printer. So if I really need a photo printed, I can use Costco or some other printing services. Those guys have professional grade photo printers.

I want to get a new printer because my current inkjet printer seems to be having more and more issues lately, and the ink dries up before we even get halfway through the cartridge. Which is saying something considering I have used this printer for college.

I would like a laser all-in-one printer (although fax is optional) that does color. I would say my price limit would be about $700. And prefferably something that will fit on my desk and not end up taller than I am. I dont really have brand preferences, but I have had tons of bad experiences with HP products, so I would like to avoid that brand unless people are really confident in a certain model.

Any suggestions?

What would you like to accomplish?

I want a reliable printer that just prints.

Meaning I don't want:

  1. a subscription

  2. chipped carts

  3. to be forced to use proprietary app

  4. it to give up the ghost after a year

I used to have a Brother B&W laser printer for years and it was perfect. I "lost it in a move" and I have fallen into the trap of buy cheap inkjet, have issues until it dies. (plus refilling carts by hand)

I also don't print a ton, so by the time I use my printer the quality is trash from ink sitting too long.

I'm looking to invest in a good printer that I will keep for a long time.

Are there any models you are currently looking at?

  • I haven't done a ton of model specific research this time around.

  • But, I'm partial to Brother printers

Minimum Requirements:

  • Budget: Flexible, but under $500 USD if possible

  • Country: USA

  • Color or black and white: Color

  • Laser or ink printer: Laser

  • New or used: New or Refurbed, but used is acceptable

  • Multi-function: Optional

  • Duplex Printing: Optional

  • Home or business: Home

  • Printing content: Text, TTRPG reference materials

  • Printing frequency: Sporadic

  • Pages per minute : N/A

  • Page size: Letter (8.5x11)

  • Device printing from: Windows, Linux, Android, ChromeOS

  • Connection type: Network

Thank you in advance for helping me!

Hey all,

I’m a realtor and I print out a good amount of property proposals (color) and contracts(B&W) every day.

What printer do you recommend that has low cost of ink but will still last a long time without breaking down

Top answer

Highly recommend a Brother Laser Jet Printer. Color anything simply cost more. What it comes down to when talking quality is how good do you really need that quality because for most people Laser Jet will simply be good enough. If not your going to pay much more and it tends to be a bit more problematic when it comes to ink. Ink cost much more than toner. Ink dries up if not used and toner does not. Ink clogs nozzles and can require test pages before an actual print wasting even more ink. Toner doesn't use nozzles. Laser Jet isn't the best quality but it simply reduces your cost and toner cartridges never dry up if not used. I get the feeling you won't need an ink printer. If you were strictly printing photos then that would be much different. Your best bet is to determine what print technology you want to use first. My guess is after simply taking a look at the cost you"ll determine Laser Jet to be the best fit. Keep, in mind Color still will be more expensive than B/W. Where you have one toner cartridge with B/W you have four cartridges with Color Laser Jets. Color Toner simply cost more. The initial toner cartridges you get with a Laser Printer are starter cartridges only and from then on it's on you. The less costly Laser Printer you get the greater chance those replacement cartridges will cost more than the printer originally cost you. These all vary depending on the model you get. Granted the page count per toner cartridge is an estimate at best but at least that gives you some idea to go by, so use that when determining what your costs are going to be. I highly recommend you take a look at the cost of your supplies such as replacement cartridges and replacement drums which Brother Laser Jets require at specific intervals. See what various packages of toner cartridges can cost and specifically look at the highest capacity toner cartridges as upfront it cost more but per print will cost you less. The larger more expensive printers may cost you more upfront but in the long run cost you less per page to operate. You may very well want to buy at least your first replacement toner cartridges just so you have those on hand when you run out. Also learn the tricks of how to extend the life of your toner cartridges when the machine tells you they need to be replaced. Typically this has less to do with how much toner is left and more to do with how many pages have been printed. YouTube can be real helpful here. This can vary by machine. Some people use third party cartridges as the cost for these will be much less. I don't but supposedly if you look on Amazon you can find some that may work perfectly fine for you. Your going to have to look at the reviews, however I personally wouldn't rely on this just in case they aren't as good, but like I said I don't do that but some swear by it. Given the cost once you look it's pretty easy to tell why they do, Not only would I recommend you get a Brother Laser Jet I would recommend you consider getting a MFC for the added functionality. These things last a good long time so it's typically worth getting those with greater functionality. I bought a more expensive unit personally because it came with a Multi Feeder for the scanner. Manual scanning is a pain in the ass and takes much longer. I'm thinking you"ll be easily able to justify this in the long run. Compare the various printers side by side and the various functionality and determine not only your current needs but what you might need for years to come. I even got a fax capable unit just because I use that every once in a great while. It used to be separate scanners where best that is no longer true and besides you don't get a multi feed scanner on a separate stand alone scanner.

If you have the space and do a lot of black/white with occasional color, get a separate black/white laser printer for most of your printing needs (we bought an old brother laser printer with wifi on facebook for $45 and a new drum on amazon), and bought a new brother inkjet for color for pretty cheap that we use once in awhile. Will avoid HP at all costs.

r/AskConsumerAdvice on Reddit: Best Laser Printers in 2023 According to Reddit
October 4, 2021 -

Laser printers deliver fast, high-quality prints perfect for homes and offices. But with countless models available, it can be tricky picking the right one. That's why Reddit communities like r/printers, r/techsupport, and r/OfficeEquipment are great resources.

Real owners share candid reviews covering performance, features, value, and more. After analyzing the most recommended laser printers across Reddit, we break down the best choices across different needs and budgets.

Factors to Consider

Before diving into printer models, here are some key factors Redditors emphasize when choosing a laser printer:

- Print speed - Measured in pages per minute (ppm). Faster is better for high volume.

- Print quality - Resolution measured in dots per inch (dpi). At least 600x600 for crisp text and 1200x1200 for graphics.

- Cost per page - Long term cost of toner cartridges and maintenance.

- Paper capacity - Number of sheets the tray and feeder can hold.

- Connectivity - Important ports like USB, Ethernet, WiFi.

- Two-sided printing - For duplex printing to save paper.

- Toner yields - More prints per cartridge lowers operating costs.

With those criteria in mind, let's look at the top laser printers recommended on Reddit.

Best Laser Printer Under $200

For those on a tight budget, the HP LaserJet Pro M15w gets abundant praise on r/OfficeEquipment for delivering monochrome laser printing under $150. It prints at 19ppm with 600x600 dpi resolution. While not loaded with features, it provides reliable basic printing.

Best Laser Printer Under $300

Stepping up to under $300 gives options like:

- Brother HL-L3210CW - Compact model great for home offices with wireless connectivity.

- Canon ImageClass LBP113w - Lightweight and fast at 30ppm with 250-sheet capacity.

But according to r/printers, the HP Neverstop Laser 1001nw takes the crown with incredible cost savings. The toner is reloadable for just 1 cent per page! It also adds scanning and copying.

Best Laser Printer Under $500

In the $300 to $500 range, the Brother HL-L5100DN gets strong recommendations on r/techsupport for its 40ppm speed, 250-sheet capacity, automatic two-sided printing, and low operating costs. It's a workhorse for high volume.

Other great options include:

- Canon ImageClass MF264dw - Feature-packed all-in-one with fax, scanning, copying, and apps.

- HP Color LaserJet Pro M255dw - Vibrant color laser printing great for marketing materials.

Best Laser Printer Under $1000

Once you go above $500, features really expand with models like:

- Brother MFC-L6700DW - Loaded all-in-one with 11x17 printing, 500-sheet capacity, and strong security.

- OKI C332dn - Best-in-class color printing with high 2400x600 dpi resolution.

But according to r/OfficeEquipment, the clear choice is the HP LaserJet Enterprise M507. With 55ppm speeds, encryption, and a massive input capacity of 2300 sheets, it's built to handle constant large-volume printing in busy workplaces. It's the gold standard of laser printers on Reddit.

Conclusion

The right laser printer improves efficiencies and cuts costs, whether for home, small business, or enterprise use. Models from HP, Brother, and Canon consistently rise to the top of Reddit discussions thanks to their superb print quality, performance, and value.

Consider your specific needs in terms of speed, quality, capacity, and connectivity to pick the perfect laser printer within your budget. And be sure to analyze long-term operating costs, not just upfront printer price. Doing so will ensure your new laser printer serves you well for years to come.

Basically what the title says. I've been using HP LaserJet P1102w for ages, the time has come to replace it, and I'm thinking of getting a color printer this time. Other than being monchrome my old one was more than good enough for all my needs, so I don't need fancy features like automatic double-sided print and alike, don't even need wireless necessarily (it died first on my old HP, I've been printing via USB since then, no problem there), I only print A4 documents from a windows PC, so no need to support anything else really. Don't care much for super high printing speeds, I would rarely print more than 5-10 pages, most often just one or two. I do not intend to print any photos either, just documents with some charts and smaller images in them once in a while.

It just needs to be as small as possible, ideally the same size as the old one, which has the following measurements:

  • Product height 194 mm (7.6 in)

  • Product depth 224 mm (8.8 in)

  • Product width 347 mm (13.7 in)

Now, I can do a bit more in height and in width, but I'd like to keep the depth on that level, as otherwise the thing will probably fall off the shelf.

Any thoughts, recommendations, ideas are very much welcome!

[EDIT] Oh, and just to be clear, it doesn't need to be HP, I'm kind of brand agnostic here.

I’m finally done with cheap inkjet drama and want to switch to something more reliable. I’m looking for the best laser printer for home use that can handle regular document printing, occasional forms, maybe the odd ticket or label, without needing constant toner replacements or random “printhead cleaning” rituals. I don’t need anything super fancy, but built-in WiFi, decent print speed and not having it jam every other week would be nice. For those of you who made the switch from inkjet to laser at home, what did you buy and are you still happy with it after a year or two? Any brands or models you’d avoid, or things you wish you had known (like toner cost, driver issues, noise, size) before buying?

Edit: After reading the comments, I found a guide that helped me compare toner costs and long term reliability. Sharing it here in case it helps anyone else: home laser printer guide.

First off let me tell I am a teacher so you know i don't have a lot of money. School employees know laser color printers at the school sites are out of toner A LOT! So, I finally broke down and bought myself a laser color printer to have at home to use when this happens because it seems to take like two weeks for new toner to come In. I searched for weeks for what I thought was the best laser color printer. I did the following:

  • Read reviews (way too many)

  • Looked at printers in stores and online (Staples, Office Depot, Sam's Club, and Costco to name a few)

  • Have had prior and current experience with an HP Laser printer (have this at work and love it but this printer is over $1000!)

I purchased the Canon imageCLASS MF656Cdw Wireless Color Laser Printer, All-In-One, Print, Scan, Copy, and Fax

  • $486.99 but Staples had a 20% teacher discount so the cost was $389.59 plus tax

  • I also activated the Staples 2x points coupons and received $79 in Easy Rewards back from Staples to use at a later date.

  • I went through the Retailmenot website prior to going to Staples and am getting $19.48 in cashback just by going through their website first.

  • WOW! What a workhorse and it prints just as good as the laser color HP at my work

  • I just checked online and they have now discontinued and lowered the price to $414.99 but sell the new 2025 model number MF665Cdw for $549.99

  • My recommendation is if you can pick up the model I got then grab it. You won't be disappointed.

I am such a deal shopper and need to save money anyway I can. I hope this helps just one person. Thank you for reading.

Hey all.

IMHO no such thing as "best" here with its implications of positivity, because every one I've touched has made me suffer.

Story is that I'll be graduating from high school and losing access to the free printing we get. I've read good things in an earlier post about Brother's monochrome laser printers, but not much about their colour models. Some discontinued HPs were suggested, but it'd be impractical to get one where I am. The Epson Ecotank line was also recommended a few times but I'd like to hopefully learn about more options before resorting to an inkjet (ew).

So, your suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
