r/CollegeEssays on Reddit: Need an essay topic! It's for a rhetorical analysis of advertisements. See instructions below.
October 17, 2023 -

I'm usually pretty good at picking a topic but I'm struggling with this one for some reason.

In this essay, you will conduct a rhetorical analysis of advertisements. Your task is to select 2-3 visual or media examples that are related to each other in terms of message, topic, or creator. These examples can encompass a variety of media types, including print/still advertisements, commercials, social media posts, billboards, political cartoons, and more. You are encouraged to mix and match media types to create a comprehensive analysis.

Here are some suggestions for selecting your examples:

Choose examples that convey a message related to the same cultural issue, such as anti-smoking, drinking/texting and driving, domestic violence, politics, environmentalism, etc.

Select examples that discuss the same cultural value, either reinforcing or challenging it. These values could include home ownership, career or financial success, the military, family values, patriotism, etc.

Pick examples that promote a similar product, such as luxury or sports cars, trucks, makeup and beauty products, food, clothing, and accessories.

Explore examples created by the same entity and part of a larger campaign, like Nike, Banksy, McDonald's, or the CDC.

Consider examples that share similarities in one of the above ways but come from different time periods, enabling you to trace these messages' evolution and communication strategies.
