What are some good controller settings to start from?
1.5 build 1.5 edit 35% horizontal sensitivity 35% vertical sens Dunno for ads anymore Linear Lowest deadzone possible for me at least... It's slow, but it's better than starring to quick...adjust speed to things you notice in game... Example, you wanna box up quicker add build multiplier. Or you get out turned by players in aim duels add some sensitivity etc...add speed cause you need it. Also ofc it's depended on how much control you have...if you have supreme control you can add speed to all these settings. And in general you should play higher sens when you can... I think starting low like that is good though More on reddit.com

Controller settings.
Don't copy other players controller settings. Sensitivity is not the only thing that matters. Their play style will be entirely different than yours so you will end up lots worse. Being an average controller player these are few tips that helps me. Always use a cover while shooting. Like behind a car, tree, building etc. Going face to face is risky when you don't know how good the opponent is. Your aim is accurate when you stand still or crouch while shooting. We always move both the sticks when shooting which makes our aim not accurate. You may take a lot of damage but you can kill an opponent when you stand still or crouch. Not saying you need to apply this in every situation but sometimes I killed sweaty players this way when I think I need to take a chance. Pause a second whether you want to engage a fight or not. You need to close the distance or have an advantage before you can attack. Shooting enemy just because you saw him doesn't work. More importantly shoot with confidence. Don't remove your eyes from recticle. There are lots of things in the screen that distract like our own skin, Audio visual, Hud elements etc. More on reddit.com

Jacobs sense is so weird not only is it the slowest by far he also plays on a 10% higher vert than horizontal. I guess it works tho since he’s arguably the best west pro and it seems like his pump never hits for less than 100. More on reddit.com

r/Fortnite_Over40 on Reddit: For newer players struggling with controller settings and aiming, here's a few tips
August 29, 2025 -

Hey all,

I saw a comment earlier I can't find now about having trouble aiming on controller. I wanted to give some tips to newer players.

First, the default settings are probably not ideal but if you're doing well you don't have to change anything. There's a few settings you'll want to check. Turn on advanced settings to tweak speeds if you need to. For all of these changes, go into a creative map with bots and practice shooting and moving around.

  1. Advanced Look Sensitivity - This is how fast you're able to turn and look around. The slower you have it, the more control you'll have, but the downside is you won't be able to turn quick if someone is behind you. If it's too low, start to gradually increase it until you're comfortable for a bit, then keep doing this until you're set.

  2. Advanced Boost - When your stick is fully pulled to a side, up, or down, it's a boost to turn quicker. There's one for horizontal and vertical. Some people don't use any boosts but I personally like it.

  3. Advanced Aim Down Sights - ADS - This is how fast your cross hair moves when you're aiming in. You'll hear "ADSing" sometimes. This is supposed to be lower than regular look sensitivity. You want it low enough that when aiming in you can track a player but not too low that you lose sight of them or you can't track them (keep your crosshair on them when they move).

  4. ADS Boost - Same concept as look sensitivity boost, only with ADSing instead. Most people have theirs set to 0.

  5. Look Input Curve - There's Linear and Exponential. Linear is raw stick movement. Whatever you do with your sticks, your character does. Exponential allows for more precision but moves slower. You'll feel the difference when you go into a creative map and shoot around. Most people say Linear is better, but not all. Here's the main benefits to both:

Linear - Quick shotgun flicks (shooting a shotgun close range without aiming in), more responsive, smoother.

Exponential - Long range fights allow for more precision, aim assist feels stronger, less shakiness.

If Linear feels better and you're accurate, you don't have to change to anything, but if you're noticing you're not hitting shots in long range fights, maybe give exponential a try. If you change it, expect a difference until you get the muscle memory down. Keep in mind, it can also be ADS sensitivity if you're not hitting shots.

  • Dead Zone - One for both sticks. After a while, your sticks may start to drift, meaning your character moves slightly by themselves with left stick, or your crosshair moves by itself with right stick. To fix this, go into a creative map and for each stick, move it each direction one at a time and see if it drifts. Up, stop. Down, stop. Left.. etc. If either drifts, raise your Dead Zone for that stick until it doesn't drift.

Those are the main things and there's a few others that are important. Under Sound Effects, Visual Sound Effects. You want that ON. It allows you to see footsteps and other visual cues when someone is nearby. Foot steps behind you mean they're behind, etc. You're at a disadvantage if you don't have this turned on.

Make sure aim assist is ON at 100%.

I also have a KontrolFreak precision ring on my right stick. It's a soft pad that goes around your stick and adds some resistance for better control.

With all of that said, here's my settings. They're NOT for everyone but it's what works for me. Some people may find these settings strange but it took a WHILE to get it down to where my movement and aim drastically increased.

Advanced Sensitivity for both horizontal and vertical - 35%.

Turning horizontal and vertical Boost - 55%.

ADS Look Sensitivity - 15% (Higher than normal because of the KontrolFreak ring).

Look Input Curve - Exponential. I just changed it a few days ago from Linear because I couldn't hit consistent long range shots. I tried out Exponential and it was night and day. I've read that Linear is better for builds and Exponential is better for Zero Build. If you change it, expect some time to adjust. I went into a creative aim training map for a few hours to get used to it. Then I played a few games and finally hit shots long range. Once again it's personal preference.

Dead Zone - My controller has stick drift so unfortunately mine is higher than average. 15% for both stops stick drift.

Hope this helps newer players. It's all about what works for you.

Edit: I just want to reiterate, my settings are probably not ideal for YOU. It's just how my hand, eye coordination and muscle memory does best. If you don't know where to start, check out Evolve Jake on YouTube and search for controller settings. You can copy a few higher level controller players settings but keep in mind they won't be perfect for you. My advice is when you change something, do it gradually and go into a creative map.

Definitely 35-37* on linear. You go higher it's a mess, lower you will die without knowing what just hit you. Here's the thing: expo will throw off your aim every single time you have to quickly change your attention from long range to close range or vice-versa. Expo are addictive training wheels, it feels like a safe place to stay, and then you will not be able to improve. Linear is pure stability no matter what, as long as you get the look dampening time down to 0. Lineal works alongside your brain, instead of trying to go against your natural movement and reactions, which expo will do: expo will make you slower and faster "as needed", at the cost of never truly knowing what's your actual movement. As for ADS try everything between 12 an 17. You'll sometimes see pros going for 46 or something like that. But they are literal professionals for a reason. A higher sensitivity on linear is also very tied to builds, which benefits the use of a shotgun for a split-second through a window edit fkr example. They go for the 40's or even 50's because they are completely tied to thier builds; they use builds aggressively, not even as defense. It's absolute madness and I don't know how people can understand what is happening on screen. Long story short: you are most probably not a pro, never go for those extreme advices. mid to high 30's, even very low 40's in linear is the way to go for basically everyone else, builds or no builds.
