r/Tools on Reddit: Angle grinder for grinding thinset and cutting porcelain tile
February 25, 2022 -

Planning to redo tile in my bathroom. Need to remove the thinset from the plywood and then also use a tool that I can do precise cuts with. Was thinking of using an angle grinder based on alot of how-to videos.

The problem is that looking at alot of the angle grinders out there, there's disclaimers that they're not to be used with cutting wheels, only grinding. Are people just ignoring the manufacturers warnings or are there good angle grinders that can do both?

I'm located in Canada. Looking for one tool that can do both but isn't going to break the bank. Most of my tools are Ridgid.

the no cutting wheel disclaimer is probably in relation to not being provided with the special guard required for using cutting wheels. its basically mirrored from the top half of the guard to partially enclose the disc and protect you better should it explode. So long as you have a guard on it and the guard is between you and the disc you're generally ok, but understand that its you taking your safety into your own hands. For the work you're wanting to do, either diamond wheels or masonry wheels (cutting or grinding) will do what you need. Tiles and other really hard stuff you should use diamond for, and for soft stuff like thinset i would recommend the frangible abrasive wheels. you can get guards that have integral attachment points for vacuum hoses to help keep dust down. Even holding/taping one near the wheel while you're using it will help keep the dust down. Or you can get a hose or other water source to keep the dust from getting airborne. Regardless, wear respirators.

Although this sub is big on grinder safety, the answer is yes, we’re just ignoring that part of the instruction manual. They all say not to use them for cutting wheels as they come out of the box. The guard that comes with them is entirely open on the bottom for grinding wheels. Cutting discs can shatter, so you’re supposed to get a cutting guard that is partially enclosed for safety. And with segmented diamond wheels, the tendency is to remove the guard entirely because it really does get in the way of cutting tile. You should not remove the guard from your grinder and you should use the correct guard for the job. But… here in the USA, we’re not going to let a piece of paper tell us what to do! /s
