I’m looking for 100% cotton king sheets for under $200. I am most worried about piling and any roughness. What’s your favorite option? It could be organic cotton but not required.

Thank you! I can’t stand the sensory nightmare of my current sheets after they started piling!

r/BuyItForLife on Reddit: Where can I find truly high-quality bed sheets?
September 8, 2023 -

EDIT: Next sheets I will try:

  • Coyuchi (top contender)

  • Kirkland (second contender)

  • Quince

  • Frette

  • Lands End

  • Italic

  • Sheets from a hotels company like the four seasons bedding store or ritz Carlton bedding store.

Original Post:

It seems like everything is so heavily marketed and influenced. Has anyone recently bought sheets that they believe are truly high quality? Looking for very smooth percale sheets if possible.

I’ve gone through a few brands:

  • The Company Store: They recently sold to Home Depot. People say quality has now gone down hill. The customer service email on their website is even down. Looks like they’re still in transition to Home Depot customer service.

  • Brooklinen: instagram brand and poor quality

  • Red Land Cotton: Very rough, not a whole lot of options. Poor customer service and return policy.

Company I have tried and likes

  • LL Bean - I had these for about 4 years before they ripped. I like these more than anything I’ve tried.

  • Parachute - got these after LL Bean sheets ripped. Nothing special about them.

Company I still need to try:

  • Coyuchi - high reviews and they are the sheets sold at the high end mattress store near my house.

I searched this question and I am posting the top answer in one of the posts: $75 isn't much of a sheet budget to be honest. Especially if you are going for buy it for life status with the best comfort. It just wont happen. Some people say look at thread count but that doesn't give any indicator since manufactures started counting individual plies (the tiny fiber that makes a single thread) triple and quadrupling numbers. Some people say look at Egyptian cotton, this is just as big a scam as thread count. It doesn't actually mean anything. Long ago it used to since Egyptian cotton had a longer staple but today its just a marketing word that means very little. All in all you need to look at material/weave and price. Cotton is great if you want some crisper sheets, decently durable. 100% cotton is gonna wrinkle like crazy though. Silk is nice in that it is supremely smooth, but it traps heat and is really slippery, I personally don't like that feeling but you may(not in your current budget) Bamboo(rayon, viscose bamboo) is a synthetic that is really soft feeling and smooth. A very good in between to cotton and silk but its not durable. If you like really nice sheets but don't mind replacing them every 5 years go with these. (again, not in your current budget, dont buy the cheap ones, terrible) Linen is great if your going for buy it for life status, its robust and becomes softer with every wash. Only downside is, is that its not that soft and smooth but I find linen to be nice and cool. Its expensive, again not it your current budget but you can actually buy used for this since its bifl Microfiber also like bamboo in its softness but its even worse in the durability dept. You can buy cheap ones but you'll be replacing often. I also find they trap heat. Jersey cotton, its T-shirt fabric. IF your into that go to target and drop $15 on them. I dont recommend this because I am not a barbarian but some people like it. You'll be replacing these every year. Honestly that's pretty much it, i'm sorry to say but you can't get truly good sheets on a relatively low budget. Once you get around 130-260 your gonna find some good ones, I wouldn't pay more than that. After that its just name brand. Also Find sheets with warranty, or a trial period (good sheets usually come with these). Source: I have been in bedding manufacturing awhile and I own a bedding company u/supamil

high‑quality sheets come down to three things: fiber, weave, and budget. thread count isn’t the magic number it’s made out to be. anything much above 400 is usually marketing, with manufacturers counting plies to inflate the number. egyptian cotton used to mean long‑staple fibers that were smoother and stronger, but now it’s mostly a label slapped on average cotton. weave makes a big difference. percale is crisp and cool, great for a fresh feel. sateen is smoother, has more sheen, and runs warmer. both can be excellent when the base cotton is good. fiber types have their own personalities. 100% cotton is breathable and durable but will wrinkle. linen is pricey, starts out textured, and softens beautifully over time while lasting decades. bamboo/viscose feels silky but the fibers wear out faster. microfiber is inexpensive and soft but traps heat and breaks down quickly. for long‑lasting sheets, aim for long‑staple cotton like pima or supima in a percale or sateen weave, around 300–500 thread count. something like the threadmill 800tc sateen set uses quality cotton, solid stitching, and avoids blended fibers. budget around $120–$200 for a set that will hold up for years. cheaper sheets may feel nice at first but tend to pill, fade, or lose smoothness within a year or two. better ones actually improve with washing and can easily last a decade or more.

Hi everyone!

I am in search of a unicorn! About 10-15 years ago stores stopped making quality sheets. Every sheet set I’ve bought has been thin and lasted only a year or so. I recently found a bottom sheet stored away from my grandmother. It was very heavy and thick cotton. The label said it was from kohls. She died about 10 years ago so I’m guessing the sheets are from 10-15 years prior. They are the thickness of 2-3 modern sheets. I am happy to spend a few hundred dollars on sheet sets.

finding it so difficult to decide. shopping for SOFT cotton sheets. no micro-fiber, jersey knit, sateen or poly. nothing to slide around on. not a hot sleeper. not super thick or paper thin.

i have used charter club damask, just ok a bit silkier today than the past, hotel collection supima 680 thread count, use those in winter - live in florida. bought a new set for split king for sleep number bed as one of the twin XL ripped. missed return window. hoping they are the same. currently using sleep number supima cotton sheet set. love these sheets although purchased 2 years ago. are they the same today?

need a new set for guest room. wanted to try looking something new. never used cotton/percale. concerned about 5-40 washes until they feel is soft & enjoyable.

i have read and re-read thru numerous postings here on reddit & other bed sheet sites & retailers. never sure if i am reading a true review or a sales pitch.

bought a set of linen sheets from sam’s club that arrive today, read some good reviews and great return policy.

id like more than 7 days to try out sheets.

read about threshold, casaluna, hudson park silk cotton from bloomingdales, kirkland 680 thread-count, pact, ralph lauren 464-thread-count organic cotton percale, Coyuchi, morrow, parachute, bed threads and the list goes on.

another thing i keep reading that fabrics are not the same as 1-2 years ago. trial and error i guess.

white king w/standard cases. do not use king pillows.

what are you sleeping on & or have slept on that you love in a soft cotton? & why?

I used to go to any department store and buy good quality cotton sheets. Smooth, thick, buttery soft cotton for a reasonable price (max $200). Now they don’t seem to exist anywhere. Everything is rough and scratchy, or so thin I can see through them. What happened? What changed? I would love recommendations but please don’t mention Company Store, Lands End, or Brooklinen. The first two have declined in quality and Brooklinen is awful.

Here is the ultimate advice when it comes to sheets. Stay away from bamboo or silk and especially stay away from polyester. In general, try to stay away from anything synthetic. Linen can be good but I personally hate the feel as do most. It’s usually not soft at all when you first get it and takes a long time. Go with 100% high quality cotton and get a Percale weave if you prioritize breathability or a Sateen weave If you prefer a soft and silky feel. Both are great, percale can still be soft and sateen can still breathe. Everything’s relative. You may be asking what is a high quality cotton? It’s anything classified as being long or extra long staple cotton. The best cottons in the world include Giza 45 or Sea Island cotton. They’re also extremely expensive. My pillowcases made of Giza 45 Luxe from Sferra cost $400 each. That’s their top range and is obviously not practical or necessary in order to have a comfortable sleep. Buy the most expensive sheets you can afford. You’ll be happy you did. MOST IMPORTANT rule about sheets are the quality of the material and to find that, you need to shop at trusted brands. If you’re willing to spend on something good, go for the brands Frette, Sferra, Letto, Schlossberg, St. Genève or Matouk. The more you spend the better it’ll be. They all have entry level sheets that are still great compared to 99% of what’s out there. Don’t worry about thread count as most companies artificially inflate the number using a variety of methods.

I agree, quality has gone down so much across all of textiles. Doesn’t even matter if we talk hiking pants, linen or fashion. Everything is made cheaper to increase the profit margin and some lame manager gets a pat on the back. Anyway, I like my cariloha sheets, and bamboo bay. Both are soft and thick. Cariloha got the edge but is also a good bit more expensive. I got ettitude and they are nice too but much thinner. Not quite super cheap thin but thinner than the other ones. Otherwise I just order and return from Amazon. I got one cotton sheet that was nice but that’s been a few years now and there is no guarantee the quality is the same. I ordered the same brand a couple years ago in a different color and it’s not as nice. So I don’t even want to recommend them.

r/AskAnAustralian on Reddit: best cotton sheets you've tried? kas & sheridan have gone downhill
December 22, 2024 -

does anyone have recommendations for super soft and buttery smooth cotton sheet sets? any type of cotton, as long as there is no scratchiness to them, where it's like you can feel the fibre. i am very picky with bedsheets. the ultimate test is when you rub the pillowcase on your face, if i can feel any roughness/texture i hate it.

for context - approx 10 years ago i discovered KAS sheets and straight from the packet they were so soft and smooth, never had any roughnness/scratchy/itchiness to them at all. and today those sets are just so buttery soft (although my fitted sheets did rip after about 8 years, but i've kept the pillowcases).

about 5 years ago i bought new KAS sheets and they were immediately noticeably different and much worse quality. they took FOREVER to soften and smooth out but they are ok now, stupidly i bought another set 2 years ago and they're still rough, they have not softened as much as the set 3 years prior, so seemingly went even further downhill.

i didn't mind the sheridan 400tc from their outlet (they do take a little while to smooth out and they're not as good as the OG kas), but they've discontinued that range and the 500tc is not as nice feeling and too thick (of course!).

on the main sheridan site, the 375tc are horrendous and the 500tc are far too crisp and not very smooth anyway.

i've tried heritage from myer and they aren't very soft/smooth, they pilled after a couple washes also.

sheet society were even worse than kas ones i bought 5 years ago, but i think they ended up softening more than KAS did, but they're still not as good as OG KAS.

basically, i want a sheet set in the quality that KAS use to be, anyone know of any? it's just disappointing because the OG kas spoiled me and now it seems like i can never find that level of comfort again!

r/Bedding on Reddit: What are the best sheet and bedding brands at TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods?
August 13, 2023 -

I hit the jackpot one year at Marshalls by getting a 100% 400 tc Egyptian cotton sateen ecru Waverly sheet set for $50. Waverly's not an expensive brand, but those sheets were so incredibly soft and wafty. I got a set for my parents and one for myself. The 400 tc meant they were wonderful for a few years and eventually fell apart - still worth it. They don't make them anymore, or I'd pay to get them.

Since then, whenever I go to to TJs, I feel around the sheet sets and towels, hoping for another good find. But nothing has stood out so far other than a $180 set that I just couldn't afford to buy at the time. Tuesday Morning had some Sferra percale sheets that were amazing, but that's the closest I've come since, and there's no replacement for Tuesday Morning. Has anyone found a good deal at the TJ stores or can offer brands they love? I try to judge based on the nap of the material, but most are rough or don't have the smoothness to indicate they'll stay smooth.

Just want to point out a possible explanation why you've yet to find a comparable set in terms of softness: it could be possible that the brands that were 'silky smooth' and labeled themselves as Egyptian Cotton were basically threaded with plastic to give it added softness. A few years back the FTC came down hard on the textile industry in regards to bamboo and how they falsely label it and mislead their customers. They basically let the textile industry know that the days of being able to label something as '100% Egyptian Cotton' or '100% Bamboo' were over and that there would be consequences for it. After that, it seemed like textile softness decreased by a factor of 10 across the board. I want to point out, also, that survival was likely the driving factor for this, at first: when bamboo came out it was softer than literally 99% of all bedding choices available and it became an instant hit thanks to people like Oprah endorsing it to the lower and middle class women of the world (who usually were the ones who bought the sheets/clothes/towels/etc for a household) and couldn't afford luxury linens that had comparable softness levels. When you go out shopping and you look at sheet sets you usually feel them and go by what is softest/feels best compared to everything else, which means that most tend to buy based off softness. If you have 10 cotton options and 1 bamboo option on the shelf and all the cotton options are not as soft as bamboo's then you're going to skip the cotton options and go with bamboo, right? At least that was how it was for me until I went with true luxury cottons (only way to go, imo), so that tended to be the 'norm' for most female shoppers when the bamboo craze started up. The competing brands (like Waverly) were seeing sale prices dipping crazily because of bamboo being an inexpensive 'green' option to them that was even softer and there wasn't much they could do about that: either evolve or die out completely. The only ways to evolve would be to buy better, softer cottons but that means your product will be over $500 for sheet set to try and reach bamboo's level of softness and most of your customers are not going to be able to afford it (since you have always sold yours for under $200 at places like Walmart or the Nebraska Furniture Marts of the world) and getting capital for that is going to be nigh-impossible. So, the only other choice was to evolve in a way that was dishonest by using a cheaper option (bamboo/plastic threads), weave it into their own cotton sheets and just not mention that it's not really 100% Egyptian Cotton and this will allow their sheet sets to be as soft as bamboo and also undercut primo brands like Frette or Sferra and steal some of their customers along the way since a 100% Egyptian Cotton sheet set that rivals what they put out in terms of softness is definitely worth jumping ship from such an expensive brand. This is what I think happened, because only after the FTC cracked down hard on bamboo did a lot of 'soft' stuff start drying up (and it wasn't because of COVID since this predates that to as early as 2009) in the cotton category. In the end, I think it was kind of a band-aid fix for many brands: weaving the cotton sheets with bamboo would only work for so long before they were either caught or made the choice to transition over to bamboo sheets completely to keep up with bamboo companies that offered their products at a certain price-point. I do know that the FTC doesn't have time to regulate every brand or DNA test them all so a lot of companies fall through the cracks for quite a while before someone complains directly to the FTC and that brand gets on their radar finally. Of course, things like mismanagement or just plain manufacturing woes could be to blame for a company's demise in the textile industry, but there's been a lot of suspicious stuff going on since bamboo hit the mainstream that is hard to explain otherwise, you know? And while the FTC cannot DNA test every fabric sold in stores, the Walmarts and Zappos of the world can most certainly do so to ensure they aren't hit by the FTC with fine violations up to wazoo, so my opinion is eventually the piper had to be paid and most stores that were OK with not knowing what their products were really made of were given an incentive to no longer play along with manufacturer's ruse any longer :\ Here's some interesting reading, either way, that helps lay out my suspicions: https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2010/02/ftc-warns-78-retailers-including-wal-mart-target-kmart-stop-labeling-advertising-rayon-textile https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2022/04/ftc-uses-penalty-offense-authority-seek-largest-ever-civil-penalty-bogus-bamboo-marketing-kohls

I have scored some Docofil and Pui Belle bedding at Homegoods/TJ Maxx. 100% Portuguese cotton blankets and they are amazing. If you see those brands, they’re worth a second look. Sometimes they’ll have the nicer end Ralph Lauren sheets and I usually snag those up. Same with the Calvin Klein 100% combed cotton sheets. Sure, neither of these are top of the line, but those CK sheets get so, so soft. I still have a set that’s at least 6 years old and they’re and soft as butter and super cool and breathable. Lately I’ve seen a lot of Everhome, since BBB closed down. I know people like to pooh pooh Everhome, but I love those sheets. I got 4 queen flat sheets 700 TC Egyptian cotton (sateen) for 14.99 each!

I struggle with buying textiles in general. It seems like clothing and curtains and towels and other fabrics are just cheap and don't last very long.

For sheets, I feel like thread count is misleading. I've gotten sheets that have a high thread count, that feel like tent fabric and rip instantly. I'm looking for thick durable high quality cotton sheets that will last a while. This is kind of one of those things that I always have difficulty with and I never seem to get the right thing.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

r/Bedding on Reddit: Help Finding the Softest Sheets Ever?
November 4, 2024 -

Okay, I don't fully understand sheets, but I've tried and I need help. I keep buying "soft" sheets, and then when I use them, they're just...sheets.

But! There were some sheets I bought in person before Bed, Bath, & Beyond closed their brick and mortar stores that were just luxurious. I don't think they were jersey sheets, but I guess they might have been cause that's the only type of sheet that comes close. I can't remember anything else about them except they were so soft that I used to just climb into bed randomly to enjoy how soft they were. I'm an insomniac and these made laying in bed unable to sleep a delight. There's a poem by Danusha Lameris called Feeding the Worms (link to another Reddit post with the poem) and in those sheets, I felt like a worm described in that poem except with touch instead of taste. Seriously they just made me so happy to be alive and able to feel that kind of softeness around me. They inspired peace deep in my soul.

Maybe I'm just being cheap and I need to spend more than $60 on sheets to get that kind of softness in a non-jersey sheet, but within that price range I've tried Cosy House, Ugg, polyester, tencel, and random sets with high reviews and praise, and every set is just not what I'm looking for. I'm only avoiding jersey because I am not so heat tolerant these days, but if that's really the only way I'll get that softness, I'll accept it. I just need to know for sure that's the case from you, fine redditor sheet specialists.

If that's not the case though, I would love to know what I should buy for a softness that makes a person forget the human condition for a little while. I'm willing to go up to $100, but higher than that and my husband will probably protest.

Thank you for any help in advance!!

I sold sheets for nearly a decade at a major department store. They gave us great training, and vendors frequently gave us products. Here's the deal for getting the best, softest sheets. They must be 100% cotton. That's the No. 1 most important thing. You'll never get heavenly soft sheets with polyester in them. You can't compromise on 100% cotton if you want the softest sheets. Full stop. Manufacturers swear that Egyptian and Pima cotton are the best. Maybe they are, but Egyptian cotton, I found, retains a lot of heat. Even though they're incredibly soft, I quit using mine because I was so hot under them that I always kicked them off. Pima cotton is fabulous, but I never found it made a big enough difference to be worth the upcharge. JMO. They really are super soft. Sateen finish is wonderful but not necessary for super soft sheets. I suspect you're mistaking sateen for jersey. Thread counts have gotten so high that imo they don't make as big a difference as they used to. As long as the thread count is 350 minimum and they're 100% cotton, you're going to have fabulous soft sheets. Don't use fabric softener on your sheets (or towels). It leaves a waxy coating on them that makes sheets less soft and towels less absorbent. Bleaching white sheets is fine. Anecdotally, I slept with someone (sorry if tmi) who had bamboo sheets, and they were so decadently soft that I had to get a set. I love them. They're super soft! But after about a year or two of use, they became discolored where my body had slept on them over time. Maybe from my sweat or body oils? So I'm sticking with cotton. Believe it or not, some of the best, softest, most awesome sheets I've found were at Costco - 100% cotton, high thread count, sateen, great quality. My personal favorite brand of sheets is Wamsutta. They're just soft, long-lasting, keep their color and shape, etc. I suspect the Costco sheets are Wamsutta sheets. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Just know that making bamboo sheets is not environmentally friendly. A lot of bad chemicals are used to turn raw bamboo into a fabric.
