I'm a post secondary student looking for a better credit card that best suits my purchases.
I currently have the TD credit card that has no annual fee. My issue is the low cash back/reward percentage as well as the categories. I don't pay for gas since I transit or do groceries much as I live with my parents, so most of my purchases only gain about 0.5% cash back.
I tend to spend my money on activities/entertainment, food ("dining out" more than groceries) as I'm on campus a lot, and subscriptions. I'm looking for a cash back/reward percentage more than 2% if possible with little to no annual fee.
I tried to look into simplii, tangerine, scotiabank, and BMO but I had a hard time weighing out the pros/cons of each ones. super overwhelming.
Please help!! :')
Can international students get a credit card in Canada?
International students who want a Canadian credit card must first obtain a Social Insurance Number from Service Canada. You can only get your social insurance number (SIN) if you are authorized to work while attending school. With your SIN, many of the big banks (e.g. Scotiabank, CIBC, and BMO) will extend $1,000 worth of credit for students who have recently arrived in Canada. TD will only approve a secured card application. MBNA and Tangerine required a form of Canadian ID, such as a driver’s license.
Can I get a credit card in Canada as an international student?
If you are an international student in Canada, you may qualify for a student credit card as long as you have a student visa. Many Canadian financial institutions offer banking services (including credit cards) tailored to international students.
How do student credit cards work?
They work like most other credit cards. You use them to purchase goods and services, and pay back your credit balance monthly. You can earn rewards or cash back on purchases based on the card you’ve chosen. Plus, you can use your student credit card for cash advances if you have available credit.
Our student friendly credit cards are generally easier to qualify for as a student compared to other credit cards and offer a great way to start building credit history.
To avoid interest charges, you should pay your credit balance in full by your statement date. Note that you will be charged interest for a cash advance starting the day the advance is made. You may also be charged an additional fee for a cash advance.
