I’d like to start a cutting garden but I have almost no gardening experience. I just want some nice flowers to put in a vase throughout the summer. Which foolproof flowers should I start with? I’d love to start from seed. Any other tips would be greatly appreciated!!
Any recommendations on where to get seeds in the Tacoma/Puyallup area would be appreciated as well!

Dahlias are tubers rather than seeds but if you are in 8b and above they generally survive our winters and come back better every year! Very easy to care for. Some varieties are more cold hardy than others so you do need to do a bit of research but they love being cut and pump out flowers late summer to first frost.

Hello!! Revamping my property’s long neglected landscaping and trying to plant as many straight species natives as I can. I will never be able to give up my cutting garden with all the fun new varieties, exotics and hybrids, but I do really believe in planting natives. I had a native landscaper come over for an advisory session and plan to remove a lot of invasives come spring. Spending the winter making my planting plan and would love to pick some stuff that works great in an arrangement and has good vase life.
Things I’m thinking of so far: Pussy willow for late winter indoor forcing Red twig dogwoods for winter arrangements Grasses?? Native spirea?

There definitely are good native options! Baptisia (false indigo) flowers and foliage are both great. Mountain mints make good filler. I especially like Pycnanthemum muticum. Ninebarks provide nice sturdy filler all season long. Many Echinacea and Rudbeckia species have showy flowers. I've used switchgrass, Indian grass and prairie dropseed seed heads. If you have shade, don't discount native ferns, either. I used goldenrod and lady ferns in my wedding flowers! There are probably even more shrubs and forbs that can be used. You'd just have to experiment a bit. It's hard to make arrangements solely from a native landscape, but if you supplement with some annuals you can create some lovely arrangements.
