Hey everyone. I've been out of the loop for a couple years when it comes to server hosting, and I'm looking for the most affordable options out there right now.

I used to use Joe's Datacenter and was only paying $68/mo for a decent little Xeon server with Windows Server installed on it, but now that they've been bought out they only have 2 options and they're both way more expensive for like half the value.

I don't do anything super special, just run some games for my friends and family. Might try to build a website and/or an SMTP server of some sort, as I've been teaching myself some of the basics. Not sure yet.

I’m diving into the world of dedicated servers and trying to find the best provider for my needs. As a geek who loves tinkering with tech, I want to make an informed decision rather than just picking the first company that pops up on Google.

For those of you who’ve been down this road, what are the key things you look for in a dedicated server provider?

Also, if you’ve had horror stories or great experiences, I’d love to hear them. I’m especially curious about underrated companies that aren’t OVH, Hetzner, or Leaseweb but still deliver solid performance.

I can recommend Hetzner, if you dont plan to host gameservers in toxic communities (like FiveM, Gmod, ...) because the DDoS protection is not the best and they will block network connections to your server if you get targeted by a ddos attack. Our pre-live servers and internal applications like Gitlab are running on Hetzner hardware. For game server business i would choose a hoster with a powerful anti-ddos-protection. My current recommendation for this use-case would be Avoro EU. Kinda the same prices as Hetzner but they have good experience with ddos attacks in the fivem universe. Hetzner if you just want to host stuff for yourself; i would probably start with a server from the "Serverbörse" (which is a market place for used/old dedicated servers at a reasonable price) Avoro EU if you want to host Gameservers, start a hosting business on your own, ... I used Contabo, Netcup and many other VPS/Dedicated Server providers and im always getting back to Hetzner or Avoro due to stability and support.

The main things I’d look for are uptime, support response time, network stability, and how flexible they are with upgrades or custom setups. I’ve tried a few big names but now I am using virtarix and it’s been a pleasant surprise. The performance is solid, support actually listens, and pricing stays fair compared to some of the bigger hosts. Try it and let me know

I'm struggling at this moment.

I had rented a Dedicated Server at Hetzner, but after a few difficulties with the usage of Robot and the server itself i have cancelled it. But i can't seem to find a good alternative to Hetzner.

I will describe my wishes below

-At least 8 cores
-At least 32GB ram
-2x512GB SSD + 1TB SSD/HDD or 2x2TB SSD
-IPV4 address
-Server Location in Europe
-No installation fees or commitment
-Maximum price of 65€ per month
-Optional: Supports installation of OS via ISO

I may understand that what i am asking is impossible, but if Hetzner can provide it, more companies could.. right?

Any advice is welcome :)

You get what you pay for. OHV (and their subsidiarys) have a little more cost but IMO worth it. https://eco.ovhcloud.com/ Take a look at SoYouStart. Hi, I'm looking for a dedicated server. Bare metal, nothing more, nothing less. I feel like I'm going crazy looking for this but I cannot find one that 10 people don't say "AVOID AT ALL COSTS". Preferably East Cost, but I'm open to other opens. I am also open to building a server, mailing it out, and doing a colocation. Just please, anything!

Edit: Looking for between AMD is a preferred, but not needed, I'll take any decent CPU with more than 16 cores. 64-128gb of RAM, need at least 2 SSDs 512gb and above. Other storage is more than welcome. I can even go less than this on everything but storage, but I'm open to anything!

Depends on what you need it for to determine the right host, but I’ve never seen anyone complain about ovh or hetzner.

I've used OVH cloud and Vultr in the past, both were fine, but I haven't used them in years. These days I just push for an Azure vm instead. What's your use case here? Because I can't really think of a situation where I would want a dedi over a high powered VM. If you want to Colo, ask around to some local Datacenters near you and see if they offer a smart hands service. Most DC's around me offer something like that or at the very least a quarter-cab, which might be cheaper to rent than a dedi with what you want.

A few friends and I are really looking into renting a dedicated server so we can play the new Call to Arms update together. None of us have much experience setting up or running a dedicated server, so we’re not really sure where to start and lot of my friends are on Xbox.

Does anyone have recommendations for good hosting providers? Are there any hosts that are especially popular or reliable for Valheim? Also, if anyone knows how much RAM is typically needed, that would be really helpful.

I’ve done a good bit of research so far and found a few good options, like Pine Hosting, HostHavoc, ScalaCube, GTXGaming, DatHost, GPortal, ValHost, GhostCap, and MintServers but it all seems so overwhelming.

Do any of your friends have a spare PC (or one that rarely is shut down) and decent Internet upload speed? I've been self hosting dedicated servers for my friends. There are lots of tutorials online on how to set one up. The largest population/modded one I've hosted uses about 3.6gb of RAM. The world pauses time when no players are online so the idle cpu usage is minimal (0.3%).

Where are you based? Do you use CDNs? What sort of hardware resources do you need? You say high volumes of traffic but what is your peak - if you're getting e.g. 10 Gbps of traffic at peak, you'd need the network infrastructure to back that up. Most dedicated servers still operate on 1 Gbps as standard. Some are 100 Mbps. So that can be a factor too.

I would suggest you to use, Azure or AWS for reliable and heavy traffic application which is great and very reliable. Other solution is to use solution like Digital ocean or linode they provide transparent rate and cheaper but you need to do heavy lifting here.

Hi u/DateFabulous834 Having been out for a few years now, the options for who to go with are basically endless so there are a few things to look out for. I work alongside GhostCap, so I'm going to use our experience with it. `Lagfree` isn't really a thing as there will always be time for the networking packets to get from the server to your house/players' houses. We only run 9950x CPU's and while the performance is solid from these, large servers with a lot of mods can bog it down and make it run slower (This is only in extreme cases). So to answer your question of `Best` dedicated server hosting, find one that is relatively close by, within your budget and at a minimum lets you know what hardware to expect/ isn't a decade-old server. Reddit tends to converge on the same advice for a reason. If you want cheapest reliable EU metal → Hetzner If you want lots of configs and global presence → OVH If you want strong networking, EU focus, and predictable ops → Gcore None are perfect, but they’re all safer than chasing “top 10 hosting” lists on Google.

Hetzner has US based cloud servers, which is similar to an AWS instance. I'd definitely not recommend IONOS.

I host on g-portal, no complaints so far.

TLDR: AMP is where I host. I installed AMP in my homelab on a VM running ubuntu server but you can use a spare PC or NUC and install AMP on windows or ubuntu desktop or server. Their template for enshrouded is super easy to manage, the service has had some incredible improvements over the last few months. You could be up and running in minutes from install. You can create webhook messages for discord servers to let you know; when a players joins / leaves. Servers starts or stops, server needs an update, server has updated. You can create your own sequence automation for taking backups all in the GUI The server has a Web GUI too. I use nginx and cloudflare to route to my install of AMP. Enshrouded is such a tiny server to host too you can use any NUC or spare PC. EDIT: my amp is installed on my homelab under an LXC container in proxmox which greatly reduces resources and cpu draw. You can just as easily install AMP on windows but you'd best install AMP on ubuntu server install for uptime or a VM on proxmox OS EDIT 2: not sure why the downvote?

I'm looking for a potential replacement for Nixihost. I love them, but their dedicated server plan just increased about 55%, from $145 to $225. I'm currently not generating revenue with the $145 server, so I think I may need to migrate until I grow more to keep my overhead low.

I was thinking about Reliablesite, for essentially the same set up, I saw that it's only $129/mo. Looking for similar specs/hosting options around the ~$150 price point. To clarify, I am using the server for cPanel/WP I have about 10 websites now. Most of them are for nonprofit organizations, so they either are getting very cheap hosting, or I waive it altogether based on their revenue streams.

Hello everyone again, I'm looking for stable dedicated servers. I'm coming from OVH, where their network has been failing significantly (to the point that they agreed to cancel my contract due to non-performance). I'm also looking for SparkedHost, where there are days of network instability, with multiple connections dropping for a few seconds. (I should clarify that this isn't my problem, as there are even reports from several clients.)

Simply that, I'm looking for stability, where there are no issues.

I've looked at sites like InterServer, HostKey, and mevspace, but I don't know how good those options are.

I need a dedicated server. I have used Hetzner and Contabo in the past. Due to the recent negative reviews about Contabo, I am now considering Hetzner's EX44. I'm looking for a reliable provider with good support and decent pricing. Do you have any recommendations or suggestions for it?

I would definitely go with Hetzner. Specs/performance at their prices are amazing and Hetzner is a very good provider overall.

Would also suggest to take a look at netcup plans. You didn't mention region but they recently introduced USA region too.
