If what you care about is the pure piano playing experience, I would suggest the top-of-line Clavinova CLP range, not CVP. It doesn't sound like you need any of the stuff that's built into the CVP series. I have a CLP 745 and am very happy with it, it is just like a plain high-quality acoustic piano that does not get in the way of anything (except it has a built-in metronome, which I appreciate). Yes, it has other features, but I never use those. Higher models such as the CLP 785 would give you even more refined key action, but when I tried them out, my personal feeling was that the CLP 745 was a big leap over all the lower models, and just what I needed. r/piano on Reddit: What would be a good digital piano for an intermediate - advanced classic player?
January 8, 2024 -

Hi guys,

Currently I'm an intermediate/advanced level classic player (pieces I have played: Beethoven's Pathetique, Moonlight, Tempest, Chopin's etudes, etc.). This summer, I'm looking to upgrade my old digital piano, which is a Yamaha Arius YDP 162 (11 years old...), and I'm looking for some recommendations as a starting point for further research.

I'm living in an old (but sturdy) apartment, and although I really want to, an acoustic option is not viable as I need a "silent" option to avoid disturbing neighbors. While the old Arius has been meeting this requirement, its key is very heavy even when compared to concert grands (to the point that I struggled to adjust my strengths down to play on concert grands) and is giving me a lot of troubles as it's very challenging to play fast passages or fast pieces. Considering my repertoire, I'm looking for a new digital piano with lighter keys that are closer to acoustic pianos so that I can properly practice techniques and dynamics (I'm planning to practice more Rachmaninoff, Listz, and Schubert later this year together with the more advanced Chopin etudes and Beethoven Sonata).

A few options that I currently have considering my budget are:

  1. Kawai CA901 (formerly CA99)

  2. Roland LX708

  3. Casio GP510

  4. Yamaha (Clavinova) CVP905

I'm also considering a hybrid option which is the Yamaha AvantGrand NU1XA. (I know of the Kawai NV5S but it's out of my budget)

I would like to ask if these are decent options and if there are any other options I should consider for my needs.

Thank you in advance!

November 14, 2025 - Beginners need weighted keys that simulate acoustic piano touch without overwhelming complexity. Look for 88 full-size keys with graded hammer action. Basic models with 10-20 sounds and simple recording functions provide adequate learning tools. Intermediate players benefit from advanced touch sensitivity and expanded sound libraries.

Answer (1 of 4): If it’s just piano I would say a Yamaha model. I’ve played one on several occasions when I was a volunteer musician in a drop in centre for adults with a learning disability.

Answer (1 of 5): Lots of good choices. Two pieces of general advice from a piano teacher who has owned a number of digital pianos over the years (both stage and home pianos). The first bit is (or should be) obvious: you want a full, 88-key board, and you want weighted keys and graded hammer acti...
