I have a heat-n-glo fireplace insert. I love the unit. We picked it because of the flame view while it was on at a fireplace shop. The flame patterns vary from model to model so pick one that you like. If a stove it doesn't matter. Mine had a wall switch that is great. More on reddit.com

August 26, 2006 - Very nice if you want a traditional masonry looking fireplace (very little exposed metal) with all the benefits of gas. Up to 60K BTU gives a very dramatic flame and LOTS of heat. Ceramic glass. Looks great cold (no fire burning). Full compliment up upgrades available. My favorite! I prefer the traditional masonry fireplace look. I don't like the "radiator" look most direct vents (all brands) give you). Best #2 - Spectra - Two sizes.

Anyone have experience with direct vent gas stoves? We are looking to purchase one to heat our ~800 sq ft loose basement. We live in Baltimore and it's for supplemental heat when in the basement. I am curious if anyone has input as to why one model may be better than the other? The Lopi seems to be the nicest and most efficient, but can we get away with the Oxford and save $1K?

I installed a ventless gas fireplace/heater in my large family room when I remodeled it. Much easier than installing a vented model and ALL the heat stays in the house. In 10 years I have had zero problems. I forget the exact cost but the fireplace logs themselves were in the area of $300 plus another $400 for the fireplace insert.
