My group has moved digital and decided to use AboveVTT.

Any suggestions for map creation resources, and why you feel its the best? Hoping to find something to create World, Region, City, and Dungeon/Interior maps. Preferably one program but I'd love to hear your reasoning behind using multiple if you do.

I use Dungeon Alchemist, and it's phenomenal. The updates are huge (and free), and there's so much scope for either making a simple map in seconds or spending dozens of hours crafting something minutely. For examples, here are all of my publicly available maps . It's perfect for dungeon/interior/encounter maps, good for making chunks of cities, but as yet there's not a huge amount of availability for world/region - though overworld biome is likely to arrive in an update sometime soon; devs have been talking about how much they want to add it.

DungeonDraft is quick and easy to use for mostly simple maps (dungeons, roads, small city streets). You can make bigger map, but it will take more work and probably buy a few assets. But, there’s also tons of free assets to ge when it comes to smaller stuff. Enough so that you probably won’t have to spend more money after the initial purchase. Inkarnate for more complex maps. You can do dungeons, terrain, cities, entire world map. It requires more work and there’s a chance that you’ll need to buy a few assets here and there to really have everything you need.

I want to pick up map-making as a hobby. In the future I want to run a campaign Ive had in my mind for a while, and currently I'd like to help out two of my friends who are DM's by creating some maps in my free time. However, I have never used programs for it, and I'm also not sure about spending money on programs Im unfamiliar with without feedback.

Ideally I'm looking for a free program to experiment with a bit, but I'm not opposed to spending some money on a program if the general consensus is that it's a solid program.

Userfriendliness is an absolute must though, as I have no experience whatsoever yet on this.

Depends on what kind of maps you mean. For world and region maps, I mainly use Wonderdraft and Campaign Cartographer - more the latter. The learning curve is steep, but it does a lot.

For battlemaps, I use Dungeondraft and/or Photoshop, or do it direct in my VTT. Dungeondraft is pretty straightforward, but often it's just easier to do the same stuff in the VTT directly.

I've been a long time dm. I really enjoy using maps to help combat scenes. I remember when I started I would draw the maps out on poster board and create whatever details for the map.

Fast forward twenty years, I have found the ability to use online tools to create custom maps from scratch.

I'm currently using inkarnate. It's very user friendly and provides great options to choose from and different styles of maps available. As well as the amount of items for detailing is wonderful.

My question for you is this, what site do you use to create your maps, where do you draw your inspiration and what's your favorite map made so far? Pictures always welcome

I have one map that u have been working on. I putting the finishing touches on it currently however this is what I got.

I used to use in karate, made some maps in proud of, but switched over to dungeondraft/wonderdraft and haven’t looked back, they’re so damn nice and they allow you to import custom assets, something I marinate was definitely missing for me.

I like using inkarnate is simple and easy to use but allows for really creative map making if you know how to use it

I’m running campaign in the desert and I’m having trouble finding a good map making software and I don’t want to find a map off the internet, any suggestions?

It's not free, but it was worth every penny to me, Wonderdraft is a really easy to use map making software, and if you want battlemaps instead of world maps, their other product DungeonDraft is great too.

I'm a pencil and paper kind of person. Get out some paper and start drawing, it doesn't need to be perfect, any discrepancies can be chalked up to the NPC map maker not knowing the terrain.

I need a tool with which I can make maps, but on which I can also move characters. We are playing at my home, so id be casting the app with the map to a TV for everyone to see and play, so I dont really need some online functions or things like that.

First campaign (two shot) I ran a week ago, I drew in Paint and moved pieces around which was annoying. I wanna save myself some trouble of doing the same thing again, and also because of the grid and all of that.

So, id like a tool in which I can create a map, move pieces (PCs, NPCs, enemies) around with everyone being marked a certain way (it can be like a colored square, I dont really care about the aesthetics), I want to be able to copy the map so I can make one for myself which has traps or other things marked and id preferably like it to be an app, which I can download. Also, preferably free, but if its paid with a demo, id be willing to give it a shot and id be willing to pay if I like it enough.

Or perhaps there is an app in which I can import my map and just play with friends. That'd be fine as well.

What would you recommend?

I use Dungeondraft for map making and export them into Roll 20. I also use token stamp2 for making the player and monster tokens which I also add into Roll 20.

You don't want a tool. You want two tools. Making maps is a complex task and tools that are good for making maps tend to be bad at other things (like running the game itself). Running the same is a complex task and tools that are goof for running the game tend to be bad at other things (like making maps). For making maps, the tool you want will depend on what kind of maps you want to make, and what your level of skill is. Do you want a solution that is just an art program (like Photoshop) where you can draw the maps yourself? Do you want something that lets you draw your own assets, but then arrange them on a grid? Do you want something where all you're doing is placing pre-made assets on a grid? For running the game, you want a VTT. roll20 tends to be the general recommendation for new DMs. Any VTT will let you import your own maps. The real DM hack is to never make your own maps. There are a bajillion excellent pre-made maps out there. Instead of making your own, find one that looks cool to you and then build your adventure/dungeon/whatever around that map. The battlemaps subreddit is a good place to start.

Wrote a zero-to-hero tutorial for making battlemaps in Photoshop. You can get the old version - CS2 - for free, and it does everything you need. Takes some setup, but allows for a lot of freedom. Also totally free.

I'm attempting to make some custom campaigns and I'm wanting a highly customizable map maker. I've got years as a top builder in far cry, halo, and have made my own games/tiles/etc,. for some pixel games I did as self projects, I've used some video game creator apps (wysiwyg style editors)

I love map making and want to get a good program to make a bunch of maps. I already make my own music for DnD and I'm looking to make my own storylines and all that too but I want the maps first.

Wonderdraft is the best.

There's a lot out there you'll find em, but truly the best map maker, imo will always be graph paper, n colored pencils. It's perfect to play on and can be manipulated very easily during combat. Ik this doesnt answer ur question but i feel like map makers never come off the way i envisioned.

So I’ve been playing online with my group for a couple years, and when we don’t run off a module I find the biggest problem is obtaining battle maps that are relative to the scene but also look good. We play off roll20 soon to be Foundry, and I’m wondering what good suggestions there are to create our own maps?

I’ve tried things like Flowscape for some nature settings but looking for a more complete package including dungeon building, any prices are fine just fire away!

I know a lot that generate cities but i would love to know a good battlemap generator if there even is one

I've tried most of the major ones. Inkarnate blows them all away with an easy learning curve and level of detail you can get.

The best is obviously going to be Photoshop. It does everything. But if you mean easiest, most features, coolest looking, then that’s highly subjective and personal to your needs. I look for aerial drone photography and then use an app to add a grid. There’s also r/battlemaps There are zillions of existing FREE battle maps out there. I'm trying to make my first dungeon and have no idea which resource to use for my map making. Obviously it should be simple and easy to use. I don't care if it has fancy stuff either as long as it gets the job done and it's compatible with Roll20 since that what my group uses. Thank you if you respond.

Dungeon Scrawl is pretty good for plotting out a simple dungeon map. Inkarnate is better for more detailed, pretty maps, but is not as easy to use. The happy medium would be Dungeondraft, which is not free.

Everything is compatible with Roll20 if you export it as a jpeg or png. If PNG, just make sure it's not over 10MB. Use a program like GIMP to save it as a compressed JPG if you get something that's bigger.

I've been looking around for a while now, since it feels like half of my prep time is spent just finding a good map that I feel like fits what I'm going for, and I think I've got it down to Canvas of Kings, Dungeon Alchemist, and Dungeondraft. Each very clearly have their own style but that aside, all look fairly easy to use(once you get used to it) and customizable. So I'm wondering, what are your guys's favorites, and for those who have tried multiple, pros/cons?

Canvas of Kings is clever but predominantly focused on external maps (unless something has changed recently). Dungeon Alchemist is also really clever and quick to use but the resulting top down maps always look a bit meh. Looks lovely in 3D but that doesn’t help you for Roll20. Dungeondraft is great but for good looking maps requires additional assets (of which there are loads of great ones available) and some investment in time learning to use it well. Depending on your appetite for investing time in mapmaking, I’d go with DA or DD.

If I’m making a map, it’s usually in Dungeon Scrawl. It’s free and does what I want. I love old school maps tho and they work perfect with Roll20.

There has been a surge of map maker "games" on Steam. I am curious about them, as I was never the biggest fan of Inkarnate for city maps in particular. Has anyone tried some of them?

I use Dungeon Alchemist. Excellent for quick maps, though you will find yourself spending many hours making the perfect map for your situation from time to time. There's also constant free updates with huge additions to assets, biomes, QoL and so on, with a -huge- update due in a month or so. The community is great too; thousands of user-made assets and maps are available free on steam workshop. Devs are very active and take community requests and ideas well. If you'd like examples of what sort of thing can be done, I have hundreds of free maps here that were made in DA.

for battle maps i use dungeondraft, for world maps i use inkarnate, and for city maps i draw them myself in firealpaca.

I'm torn between dungeon painter studio or dungeon alchemist. whats the better map maker/world maker. im looking for somethings to make maps towns dungeon and other things for homebrew campaigns with if anyone has experience with one or the other or both or even a better one im all ears.

Personally I hugely recommend Dungeon Draft for dungeons/battlemaps/towns and inkarnate for world maps

I'm trying to make a decent world map for a future campaign, and I have plenty of locations in mind, but I can't find any tools that will let me make an actual MODERN map. Are there any tools similar to something like Inkarnate that I can use to make something that takes place in, say, a city? I really don't want to illustrate this from scratch with nothing but a blank page and a drawing pad.

Dungeon draft is hands down THE best that I've used and it can make ANY genre map, there's assets available online for anything, fantasy, scifi, modern, cyberpunk, wild west, Steampunk, etc. Ive used it to make Zombie apocalypse maps before. I've used it for both battle maps and city scale maps. Additionally they also have Wonderdraft for world maps. Best of all it's just a single one time payment and no monthly fees and is 100% offline so it's outshines inkarnate in just about every way. If you want a more all-in-one program where you both create the map with it and play on it, I've heard some good things about Talespire a while back.
