r/woodworking on Reddit: Looking for dust collection recommendations for small shop
April 21, 2023 -

My 11 x 20 garage doubles as my workshop and gym. I use a mix of hand tools and power tools (bandsaw, drill press, router table, and eventually a track saw), and dust gets everywhere. My current dust collection setup is a 5 gallon shop vac with a hepa bag & filter, and a broom.

Just spending time in there for 30 minutes without doing anything irritates my nose, so I think it's time to get serious about dust collection. I have a $1000 budget and am looking for recommendations.

I'm consdering getting both:

- a Dust Right collector
- an air filtration system I can hang from the ceiling (maybe the $300 Rikon model. Not sure how good the Wen ones are)

I'm sure some might think this is overkill, but I care more about my lung health than the $1000. I also plan on upgrading my shop space in the near future.

I'd love to get people's opinions on this. Thanks in advance!

June 17, 2022 - These are more expensive and require more installation, but they're the most effective way to collect dust in a woodshop. Central systems typically have a larger capacity than wall-mounted or portable units, so they can handle multiple tools at the same time. I just upgraded my 440 square foot shop’s dust collection with the Mini Gorilla by Oneida Air Systems, which is a portable dust collector.

Dust Collectors
January 15, 2025 - Woodworkers often think of adding a dust collector only after purchasing their shop's essential machinery. But we encourage you to consider new or upgraded dust collection now, regardless of your current tool lineup. Hooking up your dust- and chip-making machines to a collector reduces your time spent cleaning, as well as—hopefully—the amount of fine dust that lingers in the air before eventually settling. A fully ducted system with a large collector might be a luxury outside your budget. Fortunately, smaller, portable single-stage collectors can do the job well, and go easy on the wallet, too.

November 6, 2024 - More importantly, it also told me the two critical figures I needed to select a dust collector that would satisfy my shop’s requirements. The first figure, CFM (cubic feet per minute), denotes the collector’s capacity required to clear away chips, shavings and dust. The second figure, SP (static pressure), is the resistance encountered by the air stream and particulate as it makes its way down the ducting system.

Finally, your system needs to be able to connect to every dust producing tool you have in the shop. You don’t want to be messing around with changing hoses and fittings all the time so I recommend outfitting all your tools with a port to fit your vacuum hose. You can find lots of fittings online to match with whatever tool you have. For my smaller tools (Hand sander, circular saw) I use Rockler’s Dust Right Flexi adapters.
