I know my best friend on R/Bedding @sorcerer will till you single ply is what you want. That may be true though most of the highest quality cotton comes in 2-4 ply (probably because people associate thinness with quality). If the quality of the cotton is good, don’t worry about the ply. This is important. You state “100% Egyptian cotton”. That statement doesn’t actually mean anything because anything grown in Egypt can be considered Egyptian cotton. Anything from the worlds best Giza 45 to some ultra shit quality cotton . What you want is “extra long staple” cotton or long staple if that’s all you’re willing to spend. Do you know if the cover is sateen or percale? A quick google search will explain sateen is usually softer and more silk like with a slight sheen, while percale is cooler and crisp. A 400 thread count is sufficient, though a 300 thread count of Giza 45 is infinitely better than a shit quality 800 thread count. So you need to figure out the quality of cotton (if possible). Sorcerer is a big fan of Malouf’s supima and Peacock Alley’s soprano. They’re more budget options but they’re still not cheap, especially compared to what you paid. If you like what you have, keep it! Answer from PhotographSad7561 on reddit.com

I just bought a 400 thread count, single ply, 100% Egyptian cotton duvet cover for about £30. Bang for buck that seems like the best I could find. After some research, that's what I concluded to be the best but I've found people on this sub to be more knowledgeable than me on the subject. Did I make a good buy? How much better can it get than that?

I often wake up covered in sweating, despite sleeping with the window open.

With Spring/Summer around the corner, I want some new sheets that will help with breathability.

Linen. Idk if it’s inexpensive to you but it’s absolutely worth it. You can try all you want and go thru a bunch of “inexpensive” fabrics, products, and marketing claims about things being made for hot sleepers but you’ll keep buying and trying more. Linen has been the only thing that has worked for me after endless trials. Don’t be me. Just buy into the fact the linen is the most temp neutral material and accept the old adage “you get what you pay for” It honestly probably is the least expensive too because of the durability (if taken care of) and will last years. I have all linen bedding and use a lightweight linen quilt with wool filling from Casper and use it year round. I live in Minnesota so it goes from -20 to 100 degrees here. Winter has some nights that I need a knit blanket

As mielnik21 says, linen itself is the best fabric for bed sheets as far as breathability goes. It stays feeling clean and fresh too, night after night. It has a temperature regulating effect so it doesn't feel cold the way cotton sheets do, but it just doesn't get hot either. When I discovered it, I replaced all my bedding. I love it. Cotton is rated by thread count and weave, with high thread counts giving a superior cotton with a very smooth finish (depending on weave). However, a high thread count also gives a tight knit layer that holds warm air and moisture in the bed, which isn't good. Linen is much more absorbent than cotton, and it's not so tightly woven. Moisture is absorbed and warm air is allowed to circulate. Linen is rated by weight - grams per square metre (gsm) - not thread count. The weight tells you how thick the threads are. A low weight means a thinner fabric. Good linen sheets are between 165 gsm and 190 gsm. I have some that are 165-170 gsm and they are light and lovely, and I have some that are 180 gsm. They are slightly heavier but not hot. Linen can be expensive, but good linen is worth it. Cheap linen can be scratchy, and while it should soften with time and wear, it's scratchy until it does soften. At the moment Ikea has 100% linen sheets and duvet covers for an excellent price. They're probably a good place to start unless you've got lots of money to spend on bedding. Bamboo is basically rayon. It's not cool. Possibly a duvet is too warm and heavy for you at this time of year. I don't know what the average temperature is where you live but if you're waking up sweaty when the weather's not hot either your bed covers are too warm for the season, or you could have a health problem that causes night sweats. If it's just hot weather, buy linen sheets.

I am in the process of changing my bedding, and upgrading from a Queen to King. I went down the rabbit hole and got some sheet, mattress, pillow etc. Gosh, it was a very fun

Now I am trying to find a good duvet cover, do you all have recommendations? Budget is around 200-250, willing to spend a little more if the product is really great.

Brooklinen makes some great sets, but quite a lot are returned cuz of shrinkage or the fabric getting scratchy over time (major ick) For cotton-linen blends, I’d recommend California Design Den or Sijo. Parachute has a nice relaxed look but can be high maintenance and tends to wrinkle heavily. Coyuchi is solid if you want something organic, but their king sizes tend to run a bit snug after a few washes. I’ve seen the most consistent feedback on California Design Den (linking it cuz its a little nicher ig). Its super soft out of the package and holds up well, full shade to brooklinen. All three are reasonably priced and feel higher-end than some of the bigger brand offerings in the same bracket. They also tend to last longer before you see pilling or thread fray. For washing, I usually suggest cold water, gentle detergent, and low tumble dry or hang dry if possible. Avoid fabric softeners or bleach both mess with the finish. If you like a crisper look, toss in a dryer ball or two to soften without chemicals

I got my duvet cover from pottery barn https://www.potterybarn.com/shop/bedding/duvet-covers-shams/ I'm sure there are cheaper alternatives, but at least everything from them seems to be good quality. I went with a 100% cotton one from the winter selection that went on clearance a while back and im pretty happy with it. [edit] they still have it, but not in the color that i bought it in. https://www.potterybarn.com/products/stewart-plaid-duvet-cover-shams-multi/ only white is left but not bad for 80$

June 22, 2023 -

Okay sorry for the long post, but I’ve been trying to find a new comforter or duvet/duvet cover but it’s overwhelming. I’ve read countless Reddit threads. For backstory:

I run veryyyy hot at night due to chronic illness, and sleep much better when I’m cooler. The Midwest summer months are awful for me. However, I love the feel of a big fluffy comforter (as does my partner).

I’ve heard so many different testimonies as to which type of material is the most breathable (linen/cotton/bamboo), and I’m also confused as to if it’d be better to get a comforter, or a duvet and a duvet cover?

I’m leaning towards duvets, as I’ve heard they’re easier to clean (or rather the covers are easier to clean) but don’t know much about the filling materials and what not.

So I guess I’m curious, what would y’all recommend/what have you had good luck with in terms of an outer layer setup/brands you recommend/materials, etc for staying super cool and breezy. I hope this makes sense! TYIA!!

January 30, 2018 - Also found a very nice Tommy Bahama one at Goodwill. ... For those of us that tends to overheat and sweat a lot at night i recommend a wool duvet. It’s breathable, natural resists mites and has significantly better moisture absorption properties.

I use a LL Bean percale duvet cover over a Feathered Friends down comfort, and it is LOUD! I sleep hot and roll/move around a lot. Does anyone have suggestions for a quieter and cooler material that is not plastic or synthetic?

Research so far suggests sateen, silk, and bamboo (but I've read bamboo is mostly plastic).

Thank you!

I am going to be upgrading my comforter to another comforter or duvet.

Was thinking it may be worth it to splurge on a nice percale duvet cover and just buying an averaged priced duvet/comforter.

Curious to hear what others think about spending more on the cover rather than the actual duvet/comforter itself...

May 24, 2020 -

Looking to upgrade our bedding. We always buy some pretty cheap comforters or duvets and duvet covers and they always seem to get worn out so quickly and become less comfortable.

Looking for the best sheets, best comforter OR duvet + duvet cover.. even pillows thrown in there if someone knows of some really great ones. I get that this kinda stuff can’t really be BIFL and do need to be replaced eventually but I’m looking for something that will last! I’m in Canada by the way so looking for stuff that I can find here or ships here.

Thanks in advance!

July 3, 2020 - I personally prefer linen. It's great for year round (keeps me cool when it's hot out and keeps me warm when it's cold out). The downside is that it is harder material and it will be more crunchy and will never look ironed, but it's not a big deal for me since it fits my aesthetic well.

Hi all!

I’m going deep down the rabbit hole of upping my bedding game. I’m just now looking for a duvet cover. After researching between Linen vs Cotton, I think I’m siding with linen, but having troubles with a quality brand. Brands I see highly recommended then start deep diving into unravel bad reviews and stories. I’d say I’m looking for a quality cover with around a $300 budget but definitely flexible.

Brands I’ve looked into:

  • The Company Store: heard quality may be worse since accquisition

  • Quince: Heard some of the sheets have had issues with holes early on, but I’m looking for a cover so maybe less of a worry. Also heard about a lot of early shedding

  • Magic Linen: Seemingly good so far but heard they don’t get as soft after washing?

  • Bosker: Not a ton of info I’ve found here

If anyone has tested any of these brands or compared them I’m all ears! Also open to any other brands I haven’t looked into yet, thank you!

r/Bedding on Reddit: In Need of a New Duvet Cover!!
August 23, 2022 -

I'm looking for a new duvet cover for my down-filled king size duvet insert. My current cover is the softest I've ever felt, but it has a few rips from years of heavy use (college, camping trips etc.).

My top priority is softness that is cost effective. I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars but don't want to sacrifice quality either so somewhere around $100-$200 would be ideal. I like solid colors that wash easily and I'm leaning away from linen. There are so many companies with 'great reviews' but it's hard to tell when ordering online. I pull the duvet up to my face when I sleep, so this thing has got to be SOFT :)

Please provide your tried-and-true recommendations. Temperature isn't a huge concern since the insert is down. Thanks!!

At $100-200 you are absolutely sacrificing quality, just so you know. This industry is one where it’s true that you have to spend to get serious quality. However, what you want is a cotton cover with a sateen weave to give you the most softness. Stick to long or extra long staple cotton if you can find it. If it’s woven in Italy or Portugal that’s a good sign as they typically do the best. If it’s constructed in a western country (USA, Canada, Italy etc) that’s good too, though some quality brands still use places like the Philippines so don’t let that be a deciding factor. Frette, Sferra, Matouk, St. Geneve, and Schlossberg make some of the best in the world and they offer products at different price points. All of the brands I mentioned can be purchased for 10-15% discounts on websites like FineLinens.com I also know Bloomingdale’s and Linen supply are having 20-25% off deals and most places price match. I personally use Sferra. IF you want to buy a St. Geneve product, buy from a Canadian retailer like these to save money since their currency is worth less than ours. https://www.tmasc.ca/collections/duvet-covers-bedding-sets-canada All other brands should be purchased from America. The more you spend the nicer it will be. Two lower budget brands that I’ve heard offer decent quality are malouf which offers a Supima collection that’s supposed to be soft, or peacock alley. Hope you find what you’re looking for!

A few years back, I fell for Brooklinen’s advertisements and bought some sheets and a duvet cover. I have liked how well the duvet cleans up in the wash and it’s overall feel but the quality is definitely not there (rips in the fabric and tears in the button holes 6 months after buying).

Does anyone have BIFL recommendations for duvet covers that hold up to weekly washes and are made of a cool/cotton material?
