r/upholstery on Reddit: Best fabrics for dining room chair reupholstery
May 11, 2024 -
I’m in the process of reupholstering my dining room chairs and have been compiling information on different fabrics to use. Here are some of the best ones I found and why.
Cotton: available in multiple colors and patterns, affordable, and can be recycled.
Vinyl: Easy to clean, durable, and affordable.
Polyester: affordable, easy to clean, and moisture-resistant.
Leather: easy to clean, luxurious, and durable.
Velvet: unique look, elegant, and easy to clean.
Faux suede: luxurious, soft, and easy to clean.
Have you all DIYed your dining chair upholstery? Did you use any of these fabrics? Or do you have other recommendations?

I think it depends on the style of chair you’re talking about. Leather and velvet are classics, but leather would typically cost 2-3x what a cotton or polyester would. As an aside, cotton and most natural fibres will collect stains more easily and be more difficult to clean

January 5, 2022 - If the original upholstery didn’t include cording but you want to add this detail to make your chairs look even more fabulous, check out our how-to videos on making single welt cording and adding cording to a dining room chair seat. A boxed drop in chair seat isn’t as common as the “flat” kind, but they are definitely out there. January 26, 2020 - I'd suggest getting some scrap or cheap fabric or lining and making a practice one first. There really is no compromise. You can't just wrap and staple it. Not that kind of chair and would look odd. I know you said you want to reuse the foam, but if it's that old, you really should replace it. ... Removed today the seat part, just 4 screws and its off.
