What size of space are you putting the plants in? How much sun does it get? Are you in a cold area of the UK or a warm one? Do you need it to be evergreen (will limit the options a lot) or are you OK with a plant that dies back over winter and comes back every year? These are important questions to determine what plants will work! Answer from derphamster on reddit.com

May 21, 2025 - Deep purple foliage adds drama from spring through fall. Vibrant pink trumpet-shaped flowers contrast the dark foliage in spring. Lush texture and fresh color are what arborvitae does best. With these squat, rounded evergreens, your front landscape will have healthy color even in the harsher months of winter.

I sadly work very long hours, as does my husband, so caring for plants is becoming beyond hard. However I’m wanting some very nice plants in our front garden that we can just leave and they will grow/flourish with only minimal maintenance, any ideas?

You said in another comment that’s it’s north facing, so I’d go with hydrangeas (macrophylla or serrata), Japanese anemone, acers (small trees not grown for flowers), hostas and ferns. As long as it’s reliably moist. Most of it will only need pruning once a year, if at all

Just bought a house. What type of shrubs should I plant in front of my house?
Need zone or location to get specific. My "standard" reply: In the front of a home I am always going to recommend conifers and broadleaved evergreens- you want the front of your home to look nice 12 months a year, not just in the growing season. I do not use deciduous shrubs as my main plants in the front of a home. I use them in stadium style plantings- rows of short things in front of rows of medium things in front of rows of tall things- but not at focal points like doorways or corners. Keep everything below the bottom of each window- dwarf varieties work well for this. You want larger things to frame the home at each outside corner. On walkways and entries you need to choose those shrubs that will not overgrow their space and crowd the room needed for walking. Dwarf and columnar varieties are best there- you want something that will stay neat and contained without monthly pruning. Then use colorful annuals in pots to set around for visual interest. As far as specific shrubs, conifers, broadleaved evergreen varieties your best bet is to go to the closest botanical garden or large park near you and see what is growing there. If you see a lot of something that means it is very well suited to your area and is easy to keep happy. More on reddit.com
