Im in the works for creating some curriculum for a university’s extended learning program and wanted to take count of the communities opinion on their favorite free data visualization and dashboarding tool.
All opinions and recommendations are welcome.
Any suggestions of good free/open source data visualization tools? I'm still learning and was looking at a Tableau license to start practicing building dashboards and whatnot, but it's $75/mo. Thanks!
Syncfusion Dashboard Platform is an option to consider.
Dashboards need to be designed using the Dashboard Designer (windows application) and published using the Dashboard Server (web application). Self hosted is the only option for now.
The dashboard platform and more are available for free through the community license program if you qualify. The licensing cost is not expensive even otherwise. Note: I work for Syncfusion.
Have a look at Subrion (https://subrion.org/). Easy to install, uses just php and mysql, can be installed with Softaculous. Not sure if it work with Postgre as I only installed yesterday and so am still discovering.
In terms of open source, Pentaho BI Suite is probably the best open source BI suite I've come across and they have the Pentaho Dashboard Designer which is aimed at the power user (so non tech users can use it).
I've deployed Pentaho in several medium organisations and have had power users designing reports and dashboards through the implementation period with little troubles (providing some initial training is given).
Depending on the format and size of your DWH, you might also find that Excel (assuming you already have licenses) can provide pretty decent drag-and-drop dashboards as well.
are you looking for SaaS or On-premise software? You would recommend some BI tool for you. I would not recommend Excel for such kind of reporting due to very limited sharing/dataset possibilities.
