r/emailprivacy on Reddit: Best free email providers?
December 20, 2022 -

Hi there r/emailprivacy.
For context, I've used the popular ones, Gmail, Outlook, Aol, etc...
I've been testing for a while just trying to find something reliable and that isn't as tedious as another.
Recently started using Mail.com, though after putting a password in exactly as I remembered entering it and then encountering trouble getting in this morning, I've kinda been wondering.

I have heard numerous complaints saying that Mail.com is sometimes super unreliable, and that it's easy for someone to get access to, but I wanna hear some suggestions from others.

Old man yells at sky, I remember even 10-15 years ago, you could just get a simple email without having to give your phone number or pay. Then yahoo started the cancerous trend of asking for phone number, and the rest is history.

The only email provider I've found that doesn't require phone or payment is protonmail, but they ban you if you use their emails to sign up for too many things so I'd rather not (not that I spam sign ups, but I have a few different accounts for various platforms is all). Google requires phone number.

Any others?

Thanks!

Hello, I've recently started my de-google journey and I've been struggling to find a mail provider that is free and in which I can have multiple accounts on. I've seen many people talk about proton but I know that their free plan only offers one account and I'd have to pay if I wanted to have more. Do you guys have any suggestions?

I also tried to look into Skiff but I saw that they merged (I think) with motion and is not available anymore as a mail service.

I need multiple accounts for job purposes, I need to separate my stuff because having a single email makes me go nuts trying to search for stuff and trying to delete all the spam messages/all ads and promotional stuff, and if I try to unsubscribe from them they always somehow come back.

Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you in advance

So you want to have features while not paying for them with either your data or money... Free accounts will always have some limitations. You could have a look at the list here and maybe go with multiple free accounts from different providers. https://european-alternatives.eu/category/email-providers

r/emailprivacy on Reddit: Free, reliable email service that does not require phone number - recommendations?
September 3, 2024 -

Looking for a free email provider that only requires username & password for login to use as a backup if need be. I’ve been told protonmail may be a good fit, but I need to make sure it is reliable first.

Namely, the issue I’ve been having with Gmail is a “we cannot log you in or confirm this account belongs to you” error, and I need to be sure proton does not do the same; and that proton can be used to create accounts on reddit, twitch, twitter, etc with no issue. I tried using outlook first, but had the same problem.

When I opened my Gmail account 10+ years ago, UN+PW was all that was asked for. Now they ask for phone numbers and recovery emails, which should be fine, but it’s causing unexpected problems. More than a few times these new requirements have lead me to enter all of my login info, be told “you cannot login & we cannot confirm this account belongs to you”; then try to use my phone number for verification, only to be told “this number is associated with too many accounts and cannot be used” (2 accounts btw).

I only have 1 phone number, so this means I can’t login at all until I try again later and get lucky. This also makes me worried I WON’T get lucky at some point, and will be locked out forever (since the same username, password, and number I’ve had for 10 years is apparently not good enough).

Furthermore, having the same phone number be saved to both of my email accounts isn’t really ideal imo anyway. One of my emails is used for banking, medical information, government ids + ssn, etc.; and the other is used for twitch, twitter, social media and whatever. Having my phone number be associated with my social security number and my twitter account seems irresponsible and counterintuitive; but I need an email for both, and google has decided to make it mandatory to save a phone number to all google accounts.

TLDR: is protonmail a good choice to use for social media accounts, and is it secure? Is there any way to be permanently locked out of a protonmail account? If it’s not a good choice, can anyone recommend something more reliable or useful? Thank you.

I'm researching about my options to move away from Gmail. I'm sticking to free options though which limits my choices for sure. I need a multi-crossing platform so I can access my emails through iOS,Android and Windows web browser. So they should have either their own app in those eco-systems or able to add their email address to a private thirdparty email client app .

There are so many options and it's ginna take so much time if i want to figure out by myself which ones suit me. Can you let me know please? I need atleast 5 Free email addresses.

There are so many providers. Proton,Tuta,Infomaniak, fastmail, mailbox, fairmail,k-9 etc.... Which ones match what i need?

I'm trying to switch to European solutions. Recently, I stopped using Chrome and wanted to stop using Gmail as well. I used the link that lists all the European variants (https://european-alternatives.eu/), but the ones that seemed most convincing were all paid. I also searched in the sub but found varying responses. I don't need anything fancy, just something to register on sites that require it. And it needs to be free because I'm a student and not working, so it doesn't seem right to spend money on email. Any suggestions?

Hi guys, recently I have a bit interested about privacy. I read about how google and microsoft are called “devil”, etc For my whole life I have been using Gmail as my email service and tbh I don’t have much work with email… yet. Most of the time I need email to create other services’ account So the question is: do I need a more secure email service ?? I do care about my data and privacy but, I mean I just use it in most case for creating accounts, can Google do anything with that?

If the answer is yes, I hope you guys can give me some recommendations. I tried Proton mail today and it is SO SLOW, both the web and mobile app. Do we have other services?

P/s: as I said I do not use email that regular, currently not running any business or smth, so I wont pay for an email atm I guess…

I want to switch from gmail, mainly due to 2 reasons:
>No desktop app
>No "all inboxes" on desktop version

So these are the 2 most needed criteria. (Also free, I would've went with superhuman or proton mail if I wanted to drop a bank) + good ui will be appreciated.

Currently looking at Spark. Any other variants?

My preference is Thunderbird for Linux, Windows and Android.

What do you mean by “all inboxes”? I paid for MailMate on macOS and it lets me combine all my email account inboxes into a single view, if that’s what you mean. Most desktop email clients allow this (I’d be shocked of Thunderbird doesn’t - it’s free and easy to try so you might as well give it a go). Also, not free, but Fastmail is excellent for email hosting. I strongly recommend people buy their own domain name and set up hosted email for it instead of tying yourself to a company where you don’t own the domain - this is why ISPs give you free email, so it hard for you to leave them (same with gmail). If you own your domain, you can move it to another provider any time you want. Means you can try out Fastmail, if you don’t like it, try Proton, etc. it takes a little technical know how, but Fastmail have great docs on how to use your own domains with them (yes, you can use multiple - use one domain for signing up to things, another for real contacts). The other massive benefit of using your own domain is you now have unlimited email addresses - I use a unique email address for every website I sign up to: [email protected] , [email protected] . I don’t need to set them up in Fastmail beforehand because I own the domain, and can say “all emails to this domain go to my inbox”. Why does this help? It means you know when, and who, leaked or sold your data. If you start getting spam to [email protected] , you know they had a breach.

hello all!

I want to switch my email from GMail to something else for my bank and credit card statements etc. I am ok with having to spend a few bucks too. I would definitely need in mail searching, custom domain, decent storage (5 Gb?). Would want it to be secure, and hopefully no ads or email provider selling my information.

If it has the following then it'll be great - ability to add labels/tags on mail, search by keyword, date range, attachment.

A lot of deGoogled veterans are present on the sub.. would like to know your thoughts on some available products.

Thank you :)

Proton Mail seems to be the most consistently recommended in the privacy community. I just signed up for it yesterday myself. It’s $5 a month for the basic plan.

Honestly, almost anything is a step up from the likes of Gmail. Here are the ones I've used in my search for more private/secure email services: Posteo Mailbox.org Fastmail CTemplar Criptext Tutanota Protonmail self-hosted using mail-in-a-box Some offer no free tier, Protonmail only offers 500MB on theirs, and others offer 1GB-2GB. For custom domains you'll be on a paid tier. Protonmail is significantly (4-5x) more expensive than most others, depending on your needs / what tier you end up in. Self-hosting comes with more work/responsibility than many would care for. With MIAB on a VPS it's honestly not too bad, almost set it and forget it and works great on an inexpensive VPS, putting it in the same price territory of paid email services. Whether it's potentially a security risk to roll your own vs trusting the experts to do it properly is a legit question. You still have to trust your VPS provider, or, go through the time and greater expense of properly setting up a server and static IP at home. For most people that's probably a no go. I enjoy tinkering with this stuff, so personally I like it - it's cool to have total control over your email service! Protonmail does offer a solid, mature UI/UX. They do lack some things, like automatic email forwarding and U2F 2FA. All the alternatives trade blows on feature sets, security and privacy. I would rate Protonmail highly all around but really wish they'd add U2F support. Even Fastmail, a service not usually touted for its superior security/privacy in discussions about Protonmail, supports it. They also offer a lot more for your money at the same price point (30GB vs 5GB). Posteo offers a host of customizable security settings, lots of features overall, a functional UI, but lacks U2F support. Mailbox.org works well, nice functional UI if not a bit slow, I feel like they try to do too much (drive, chat, video, etc). CTemplar is said to compete with Protonmail/Tutanota, but i personally had issues with some emails not being received coming from there and they also do not support U2F. Tutanota supports U2F, custom domains, boasts a zero-knowledge full-text search feature, and has their app listed in F-Droid (for those that care about avoiding Google Play). For those that care more about using their preferred email clients, Fastmail would be better. There's honestly no clear winner, they are all pretty darn good, so it depends mostly on whether there's a particular feature you deem more important.

*is NOT Gmail, Samsung Mail app, Outlook app

  • ability to pin emails to stay at the top

  • Allows multiple accounts (Gmail, iCloud, outlook, etc.)

  • Ability to quickly (in bulk) delete LOTS of emails

  • Can create folders and/or has a good organization setup

  • Is FREE

**(This one isn't necessary but would be nice) the ability to quickly unsubscribe from companies without having to actually go to their website... Gmail just implemented this feature and it's great

I have a Samsung Galaxy S10+ if that matters.
