I have been trying to shop around, but it seems like the most popular one doesn't work on mac, and I'm worried about not being able to effectively back up my data with some of the options I've seen.
My situation is that I'm writing ethnographic fieldnotes, so I want to have the ability to make discrete entries, but ideally also the option to code them.
I am also open to suggestions for free software/websites that would be useful for essentially making diary entries, which can easily be flipped through, and later inputted into maxqda when I eventually shell out for a license.
I may just end up using google docs, but it's very frustrating that my university doesn't provide licenses for this stuff. If you have any advice on how to get my university to pay for it that's also helpful!

Free, simple and decent enough is QualCoder https://qualcoder.wordpress.com/how-to-use/ A lesser MaxQDA/NVivo/ATLAS.ti rival, QDAMiner offers a free (slimmed down) version of its tool called QDAMiner Lite https://provalisresearch.com/products/qualitative-data-analysis-software/freeware/ And, finally, there's a cloud-based free solution cutely called Taguette: https://app.taguette.org/ But, as others indicated, I'd press for funding/coverage by your advisor/department/university for one of the proprietary tools.

I guess that depends more on the type of qualitative research you're referring too--for example are they interviews or observations or video recordings, etc?
For example, most people analyzing qualitative interviews (N = 20 or fewer) complete their analysis without software (although some use various software packages to transcribe interviews). Mostly people just do this in Word, and color code their interviews.
NVIVO is a good software tool though, if you really want to use software for qualitative methods. And they provide a free trial.
