I’m a beginner in SEO looking to change careers and learn SEO.
Ahrefs & Semrush are the two “top dogs” of SEO tools as far as research is concerned.
Are there other tools that do a comparable job but actually free? (Some might be free but have limitations)
What are free tools to use that do a great job for SEO research where paying is not necessary?
But I also hear paying for Ahrefs or Semrush is worth it because of their value and “you get what you pay for” -which makes sense.

Nah, there are a lot of good tools here, but I would still suggest Google in your exploration phase. What do I mean? Imagine you just got hired for a company selling corkscrews. You might know your wines but corkskrews are oddly specific and you have no idea what to write about. You want to know what the competition uses because they have been selling corkscrews online for quite a long time.
Use this search query:
(luxury "corkscrew" | high-end "cork screw" | best "corkscrew")
You can add adjectives or more specific terms and then you can see all the results of companies that are doing the same thing as you do. Did you know you could open a new tab using your middle mouse button? Do it! Do it like 50 times for various websites that look like they could be inspiring you.
