I know you’re getting hated on but I grew up sleeping on futons and I think they’re great. My mom lived in Japan for a long time so she was used to it before I was born. If you’re going to buy something online I’d just be sure it’s returnable so you can try it and send it back. I sleep on a futon I got for free on Craigslist and any time anyone sleeps in my bed they comment on what good sleep they had and how comfortable it was! I think everyone’s needs are different with a bed so just find something that’s well rated within your price range that you don’t have to commit to once you buy and check it out. More on reddit.com

Honestly futons might just suck haha. I've had three. All very uncomfortable couches for extended periods, and didn't take long before they were uncomfortable to lie on as well. I would recommend against metal pole style frames and go for wood slats if able.

It's not the prettiest, but Ikea's Lycksele Lovas is very comfortable. It pulls out as a single piece mattress, so no awkard seams/gaps like you get on the type that fold the back down, and there are enough flat slats that you don't feel them through the mattress as with a lot of other futons of this type. I used it as my bed for 2 summers and had no complaints. It is also very compact, though actually folds out to about the size of a full sized mattress (about 1 inch wider, 1 inch shorter, but full sized sheets work fine). More on reddit.com

Side note: I have slept comfortably on floors before w Japanese style futons but no longer want to look a mouse straight in the eye.

Yeah, I want to change my bed out to a futon because I want to get something a little smaller not so robust like a full-on bed. I like the interchangeable futons such as Nirvana Futons. And I do know that Japanese futons exist.
I want to get something that I can just put away, either west style futon (bed to sofa) or a Japanese one. Because I'm going to be getting a desk and possibly VR. The only way I can really get it is buying it off Amazon. Any recommendations y'all have?
The ones I have been looking at are Nirvana Futons, Kodiak Furniture, FULI, EMOOR, Milliard, & DHP. Are the brands I've looked at so if any of y'all have any other suggestions, I'd happily take them!

Try going to a furniture or futon store and try sitting on some of them. Buying something like furniture "sight unseen" off amazon, sounds REALLY risky to me, because there's so much crap on there with fake reviews and misleading pictures, that you're playing with fire. For what it's worth - I had one for years in a previous apartment, because I didn't have the money for an expensive sofa (and wasn't home all that much), so it was fine, but they really aren't comfortable. They're functional, but after a few months of use, most of the mattresses get compressed & hard.
