After having lived in Tokyo, I adopted a futon as my bed-of-choice for the last twenty+ years. I go with a wooden frame that re-configures into a couch, to get the most utility (and space-saving) in my room. I love the cotton covers that make regular cleaning easy (and a fitted sheet over the futon cover for sleep, removed for “couch action”). Answer from tomtermite on reddit.com

I’m about to move to a small studio and want to invest in a super high quality futon that can act as my every day couch AND bed. Willing to drop up to $2k, but it’s difficult to find any good recommendations online so far. Any advice?

Side note: I have slept comfortably on floors before w Japanese style futons but no longer want to look a mouse straight in the eye.

Yeah, I want to change my bed out to a futon because I want to get something a little smaller not so robust like a full-on bed. I like the interchangeable futons such as Nirvana Futons. And I do know that Japanese futons exist.

I want to get something that I can just put away, either west style futon (bed to sofa) or a Japanese one. Because I'm going to be getting a desk and possibly VR. The only way I can really get it is buying it off Amazon. Any recommendations y'all have?

The ones I have been looking at are Nirvana Futons, Kodiak Furniture, FULI, EMOOR, Milliard, & DHP. Are the brands I've looked at so if any of y'all have any other suggestions, I'd happily take them!

Thank you, thank you, y'all! :)

r/minimalism on Reddit: Which is best Futon Frame vs Rollway Bed vs Trifold Mattress?
November 1, 2024 -

Due to finances I'm living in a rented room and need space as my desk and computer and dresser are in this room. I'm going to get rid of my traditional full size bed frame and mattress. I want something I can fold up to create more space. I went back and forth and came to these options.

1) A Futon Frame with a Milliard Memory Foam Futon Mattress - Full Size ( I didnt put link as I don't know if it's allowed here) Can serve as a couch or bed.

2) Tri-Fold Memory Mattress and a foldable frame ( I can fold both and put in a corner)

3) Folding Rollaway Bed with wheels - reviews seem to say they are not that comfortable. But I could roll away in a corner. Not sure how comfortable the mattress could be being folded like that.

Anyone use any of these as a main sleeping bed or have thoughts on which is more practical for flexibility and space saving when needed? Thanks!

I’m looking getting getting a futon to replace my bed so I can have more bedroom space but I’m hard-pressed to find an affordable futon that doesn’t seem like it would be a pain to sleep on for longer than a couple of weeks.

Any recommendations that won’t break the bank?

I know this question has been asked many a time, but most of the forums I have found have been 2+ years old or about Japanese futons that roll up after use. I am specifically looking for classic convertible couch - bed futons. I do not want a sofa bed because I will likely sleep on it in the folded position most days, and I do not want a day bed because I want the option to extend into a full size bed while maintaining the thickness of the mattress.

I am planning to replace my couch with a futon, with the goal of then getting rid of my bed and just utilizing the futon. I have a small apartment and just hate how much space my bed takes up when I'm not sleeping and want more space for creative activities.

I have no issue with harder mattresses, and slept on a futon as a teen. I also am open to spending a pretty penny on a quality futon mattress.

The best rec I have seen so far has been for this futon mattress and will likely purchase the frame from futon land or futon shop

I'm looking for a comfortable futons.

And I'll just get this out of the way I'm so used to sleeping on garbage mattresses that it won't bother me. Even if it's slightly more comfortable than what I have right now that's great for me lol. Mattress I have right now is a full and it's not nice to sleep on, the last one which was a queen was a little worse because the springs would dig into you. I've slept on carpet floor, in a sleeping bag, those bad camper beds (pull out and table ones), recliners, sofas, and I don't have for me personally no real way to say what's comfortable or not because I'm just so used to bad mattresses lmao.

The ones I have been looking at are Nirvana Futons, Kodiak Furniture, FULI, EMOOR, Milliard, & DHP. Are the brands I've looked at so if any of y'all have any other suggestions, I'd happily take them! I don't want anything too expensive, not those $1000 ones people have recommended.

Thank you, thank you, y'all! :)

r/minimalism on Reddit: Bed frame for Japanese futon mattress?

I'm not sure if this is the best thread for this, but this sub seems to have come up the most when searching for Japanese futon mattress. So, I have had my current japanese futon mattress since late 2023. I moved from my last place (renting a room in a house) to a studio on my own. I am thinking about getting a bed frame to get my mattress off the floor. From the research I have done it looks like a platform bed frame is what I would be looking for, but the ones with headboards seem to have too big of a gap for my mattress. My mattress isn't that thick and so it would leave a gap.

Mattress pic one

Mattress pic two

This frame is from same company that I bought my mattress from, but the headboard is really small

Would be nice but headboard too high

Might work 1 and 2

My questions are:

  1. Does anybody have links or names of what I should be looking for?

  2. Has anybody else put a similar mattress onto a frame? If so, was it still comfortable?

  3. Anything I should be considering that I haven't considered?

I’m looking to buy a japanese futon for space and back pain reasons. I’ve read some of the older posts about it but they are a bit old and don’t have all the info I’m looking for. Brands I’m considering are The Futon Shop, Takaokaya Global, and Futon Beds from Japan . I've seen a lot of recommendations for The Futon Shop but not much info on the other two. The biggest difference I've noticed is The Futon Shop offers a 5-inch thickness with wool and cotton whereas the other ones seem to be thinner and only contain cotton.
There's a pretty good sale going on at The Futon Shop right now until June 2nd (tight window, i know) so if anyone can let me know soon, I would really appreciate it. There's just a lot of variables and i know squat about futons.
