Yeah, I want to change my bed out to a futon because I want to get something a little smaller not so robust like a full-on bed. I like the interchangeable futons such as Nirvana Futons. And I do know that Japanese futons exist.
I want to get something that I can just put away, either west style futon (bed to sofa) or a Japanese one. Because I'm going to be getting a desk and possibly VR. The only way I can really get it is buying it off Amazon. Any recommendations y'all have?
The ones I have been looking at are Nirvana Futons, Kodiak Furniture, FULI, EMOOR, Milliard, & DHP. Are the brands I've looked at so if any of y'all have any other suggestions, I'd happily take them!
Thank you, thank you, y'all! :)
My company was kind enough to buy futons for my wife and I for our apartment here, but being from the US, sleeping on the floor the last two weeks has not been fun for my back or shoulders.
The beds in the two hotels we stayed at prior to our moving in were also some of the hardest mattresses I've ever laid on.
With those trends in mind, I'm guessing that's the norm here. That said, I do like mattresses with a bit of give that let's me sink into it slightly. A lot of the first listings I see on Amazon say "high density", so I'm guessing that's the Japanese equivalent of extra firm mattresses in the US.
I'm afraid of buying a mattress and it too being a slab of concrete wrapped in cotton. Any tips are greatly appreciated.
Bonus question: those who came from bed-oriented upbringings who still sleep on futons, How did you adapt? Or did you just get used to it with time?

I have been down the rabbit hole but most of the prices for the more authentic japanese futons start around $550 for the size I need (twin xl or similar) On Amazon there's tons that people seem to be getting by okay with on Youtube and in threads so I was looking for input from someone who maybe started with a cheaper option and later upgraded to a more expensive one.
Additionally, I think I probably need to factor in a tatami mat or similar into the price since I have hard floors.
I've been looking at the FULI brand of stuff on Amazon since their stuff seems relatively well reviewed and you can get stuff that's all sized together, if anyone has a better recommendation for around those prices (260$ for a non-100% cotton full XL futon) or personal experience I would be happy to hear. I would prefer full cotton if possible though
I'm looking for a futon that's BIFL and comfortable. Most of the stuff I see on Amazon looks like it's made to last the duration of a lease. Any ideas?
Honestly futons might just suck haha. I've had three. All very uncomfortable couches for extended periods, and didn't take long before they were uncomfortable to lie on as well. I would recommend against metal pole style frames and go for wood slats if able.
Don’t buy it off amazon, even at crappy furniture stores you’ll be able to tell if it’s comfortable or no
I'm looking for BIFL futon or other sleeper couch recommendations. I'm not expecting a BIFL mattress, but a frame that can withstand roudy children and remain easy for elderly grandparents to operate one handed.
Thanks!
Not necessarily a minimalism thing but I’m tired of air mattresses eventually failing for guests. I know these exist because many people on this subreddit use them as their primary bed. A lot of the reviews on Amazon are mixed at best. What Japanese futon is everyone using?
I'm looking for a comfortable futons.

And I'll just get this out of the way I'm so used to sleeping on garbage mattresses that it won't bother me. Even if it's slightly more comfortable than what I have right now that's great for me lol. Mattress I have right now is a full and it's not nice to sleep on, the last one which was a queen was a little worse because the springs would dig into you. I've slept on carpet floor, in a sleeping bag, those bad camper beds (pull out and table ones), recliners, sofas, and I don't have for me personally no real way to say what's comfortable or not because I'm just so used to bad mattresses lmao.

Thank you, thank you, y'all! :)
Hi,
I'm planning to dispose my bed and sleep on futon mattress. There are so many sellers online and I couldn't decide which one is reliable and a quality one.
Appreciate if someone can suggest a good futon mattress or shikibuton
Thanks!
Looking for a japanese style futon bed that i can store away when not needed. Preferably not too expensive and easily foldable.
I live in Philippines and have no idea where to buy in physical stores with futons. Are the japanese brands superior, i see some in local online shop, they are cheap but probably made in china.
Any recommendations?
I'm interested in getting a shikibuton mattress but also want to do a trial run before investing tons of money in an authentic one, so looking at some cheap ones on Amazon. I know they aren't authentic and are cheaply made, but has anyone had any positive experiences with them and/or recommendations? I also have minor back problems. My current mattress is no good and am looking for other more minimal solutions other than a new $1000+ mattress.
Thanks, all!
I move around a lot and prefer to live in small apartments and lofts. What are some good options for a futon that is comfortable and will last.
I prefer dark wood or retro colors for styling.
I like the difference between futon and futon (see wikipedia) We've had this style of futon for the last 20 years, and they've served us well. I think it's really the price that differentiates the two; futons are priced like a cheap couch, futons are priced like a mattress. If you can find a futon that's priced like the matress/couch combo that it is, you will be very well served. Otherwise you're just buying cheap dorm-room crap.
I can't offer much advice other than to avoid the ones sold in big-box retailers. I've had futons from WalMart, Target and Big Lots, and none of the three held up very well. I finally decided just to get a normal bed, single size, and get a collapsible frame for it.
If you want a futon that will hold up well, try checking bedding-specific stores; avoid the big-box retailers.
I’m looking to buy a japanese futon for space and back pain reasons. I’ve read some of the older posts about it but they are a bit old and don’t have all the info I’m looking for. Brands I’m considering are The Futon Shop, Takaokaya Global, and Futon Beds from Japan . I've seen a lot of recommendations for The Futon Shop but not much info on the other two. The biggest difference I've noticed is The Futon Shop offers a 5-inch thickness with wool and cotton whereas the other ones seem to be thinner and only contain cotton.
There's a pretty good sale going on at The Futon Shop right now until June 2nd (tight window, i know) so if anyone can let me know soon, I would really appreciate it. There's just a lot of variables and i know squat about futons.
Has anyone found a decent company for this under $300? The issue is the bed needs to fit more than one person. There is nowhere for anyone to sleep or sit in my place, my own bed is even too small for me and my pets, let alone anyone else.
Every futon I have had in my life has been dreadfully uncomfortable, and the ones that aren’t are too much for me right now. I have major insomnia also so unfortunately it really matters.
Similarly, the mattress on the floor is not an option because of allergies and back issues.
I’m looking through futon after futon, and any of them that seem like they would be good, upon further inspection are actually awful. Either structurally, or in terms of lack of comfort.
There has to be a company out there that makes them well affordably that I can order on Amazon with free shipping. I know it’s a long shot. I’m just wondering if anyone knows of anything.
I inherited an old mattress from a friend 2 yrs ago and noticed yesterday that it has some mold on the bottom, it's a foam mattress and it goes all the way through to some small spots on the top.
Totally grossed me out and now I want to get rid of it. My place is tiny and a sleeper couch or futon would be great but I'm worried I can't find one that's comfortable and still in my budget.. less than $600 preferably.
Ikea seems to have the most affordable options but I'm worried they will kill my back if I'm sleeping on it nightly. Any recommendations?
The reason I’m looking into buying a futon is because I hear it can be really good for your back. I’m 21 and because of sports and bad posture habits my back is all fucked up. On top of that my current bed is made of really soft memory foam and I sink into it which isn’t helping my back. I’m looking for a reliable futon setup for a budget of about $400usd. My room has carpet so I also have questions on how I can realistically set it up and maintain it. Any advice would help Thanks
I’m about to move to a small studio and want to invest in a super high quality futon that can act as my every day couch AND bed. Willing to drop up to $2k, but it’s difficult to find any good recommendations online so far. Any advice?
Side note: I have slept comfortably on floors before w Japanese style futons but no longer want to look a mouse straight in the eye.
