Interesting you’re having issues with the stairs using the Miele. This is what I would usually recommend. Are you holding the motor in 1 hand and the wand in the other and walking up the stairs? Are your stairs carpet or hard flooring? Usually the best way to go for stairs is a canister style like a Miele. (Unless you have a Miele upright but I assume not?) r/VacuumCleaners on Reddit: Best corded portable vac for three story house?
February 28, 2025 -

In short: I live in a three story house next to the beach (~140 m2) which means that my kids carry sand into the house (can’t be avoided) and I have to vacuum across three stories and two staircases. In essence I vacuum more or less daily.

I currently have a Bosch cordless vac and a Miele corded vac. However I’m not really satisfied with the setup: The former has too little battery life and too little suction power and the latter being too much of a hassle with the stairs. Therefore I’m wondering if there exists a good hybrid between the two?

I was wondering something like a portable but corded vac good for the case? I don’t mind there being a ‘second’ compartment for the dust bin etc. that I have to carry around but on the Miele classic vacuum it’s simply a little too heavy to be a pleasure. Further I think I should be corded. I was thinking about a ‘backpack vac’ or whatever they’re called but might be too much of a hassle. Like the Nilfisk GD5.

Or maybe a smaller workshop vac from Bosch, Karcher, Makita etc (but the handheld ones are often battery powered?)

Located in Denmark - no budget.

Any advice or experience on the topic?

Thanks in advance!

Budget - $200

Areas - This is specifically for dog hair removal. 90% of the area is carpet, stairs, edges of the room, hard to reach places. Bonus - being able to clean dog hair in my car.

I am looking for a handheld vacuum recommendation that has a lot of strength for cleaning up dog hair on carpet (on stairs, along the edges, etc). I would like a corded one as they would normally imply a stronger vacuum. It's very tiring carrying my full size vacuum around to use an attachment to clean stairs, edges, etc. I have bought a couple handheld cordless vacuums in the passed and they have all been pretty mediocre, hoping I can break that cycle! Thanks in advance.

The current one I am considering is the Shark CH950UKT.

I had a shark break a few years back. The local vacuum repair shop I took it to told me they can almost never fix sharks because they apparently don't make or sell spare parts. This may have changed but that is my experience with Shark.

As far as little handheld vacuum cleaners go, there is nothing amazing on the market, but there are some decent ones like the one for which you are looking. For ones on the market today, the one that you mentioned would do the job fine. Sure, Shark does not have great parts availability or service, but it would just be for getting little jobs here and there. If it breaks, I would assume it is not that huge of a deal. As far as suction and airflow numbers go for that Shark, it is a fairly impressive little thing. The build quality is nothing special, but not worse than any other little Chinese thing. Just make sure you keep the filters clean! Hoover also makes a handheld vacuum cleaner that I like called the ONEPWR Blade MAX "AutoVac" , although there is nothing stating that it cannot be used in a house. It does a lot of the same things as the Shark models, just with a hose that I like a lot and a better battery setup with two batteries. Also, it is more powerful by quite a bit. I would say that the main thing the Shark has over the Hoover is that the Hoover is more bulky, but the Hoover also is able to have a bigger bin with a more effective cyclone setup in it. Like the Shark, the quality is nothing spectacular, but it functions in its designed purpose.

what's the best cordless handheld vacuum these days? the cheaper the better if it actually works. mainly need it for tight spots in my car (between seats, cupholders, etc), so a crevice tool and decent suction would be huge. would be ideal if it charges fast and has a washable filter. what are you all using that wont die after a year?

EDIT: I ended up going with the Ryobi One+, and I'm pretty happy with it. Its surprisingly powerful for the size and the battery life is quite good too. thanks for the suggestions!

I'm looking for a good, reliable corded vacuum for the children to help with cleaning. It needs to be small, light and easy enough for a child to use, so I'm thinking a stick vacuum. I want corded do a good, consistent job on carpet.

Budget is secondary but ideally less than UK£200 (about US$260).

Most users / people with a “special interest” in vacuums would recommend a modern bagged vacuum cleaner. The reasons being; They’re much more hygienic, best for asthma & allergy sufferers. They require significantly less maintenance than bagless vacuum cleaners. Most, don’t use “washable filters”, but are usually very long lasting and pretty inexpensive to replace. In the long run, they actually work out cheaper. Also saving you time. Reasons to avoid a bagged vacuum cleaner; You have to buy bags. They “loose suction” after filling up. Well yes, so do bagless vacuums. Reasons to avoid a bagless vacuum cleaner; Dyson, sharkninja and the other big Bois have been making bagless vacuums much less reliable, complicated & just no good. Because they won’t have returning customers if they did make something affordable, reliable & long lasting. They loose suction after filling up. The same as modern bagged models. So, with that in mind, there a few bagged cordless / stick vacuums available on the UK market. Firstly, This thing. BELDRAY Airgo Cordless Vacuum Cleaner, https://beldray.com/airgo-cordless-vacuum-cleaner/?srsltid=AfmBOop-PDJ_cRWk3zg2lieNqnbfteEDlF0ss88ki9QQ5C5LakDVfw8p Non affiliated link. I can’t comment on its performance, but it does weigh a lot, at 7.4KG! Read reviews, however, this more of a budget friendly vacuum on the cordless small bagged end of scale. Moreso, bear in mind, this is a company that sold Asbestos containing ironing boards to mothers in the 20th century. I don’t think they care about filtration. . . Next, The Henry Quick, https://www.myhenry.com/henry-quick Non affiliated link. More in the midrange area, at a premium price. Hmmm. Never owned or tried one (yet) myself, however, from a friend professional cleaners point of view; Gravely disappointing. Lastly, The Halo Capsule X Read my review here, in which I’ve recently personally purchased. https://www.reddit.com/r/VacuumCleaners/s/nL18Q4wFoW Overall opinion of the Halo Brand; It’s okay. It’s not fantastic, but it’s a decent gadget for quick whip ups.

I'm looking for a recommendation for a small/handheld form factor vacuum with high suction power and cleaning. This would be for drawers and cabinets and crevices. I dont want something that needs to constantly recharge and instead can get plugged into either an outlet at home or the inverter in my car - so ideally under 1000w max draw but im open to just getting a 3000w+ beast that can only be used at home. The key for me is that it can get into tight places and has suction + precision. Most of the time this will be used on hard surfaces or occasionally car carpeting.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations. Also would prefer to keep this under $200 but again, if its reliable and a beast and meets the criteria ill pay more.

Edited to add: we use our hand vac mostly for sweeping up in the kitchen on a grouted tile surface, but wouldn't be opposed to using for car clean out and other detail areas (which would require a wand tool attachment)

We have gone through a number of hand vacs (the battery powered kind) but we end up hating them for one reason or the other (poor battery life, poor suction, pain to empty). Our latest one has no problem with suction but it spits anything tiny it picked up out the back. We're at the point where we're about to pay any price, even buy corded (which would suck), just to have something that won't end up in a landfill in 2 years.

May 2, 2023 -

I almost titled this post "A decent cordless hand vacuum that doesn't suck" but then realized that a "vacuum that sucks" is exactly what I want, hehe.

Anyway, many years back, I had a Dustbuster, and I think most people will recall that they were terrible. Didn't hold a charge, and even on full charge barely had any sucking power.

I'm looking for a small hand-vac to keep upstairs. Our light colored south facing house gets inundated with ladybugs in the autumn (when they come inside to hibernate) and spring (when they come out of hibernation) and it's annoying to have to constantly drag the regular vacuum around to deal with them.

I should mention that I'm not talking about just a couple ladybugs here and there... if that were the case, we'd pick them up and put them outside. I'm talking dozens upon dozens. Daily.

Anyway, after too much backstory, can anyone recommend a good hand-vac? Have they improved at all in the past 30 years?

Thanks!

If you want a cordless vacuum I'd look at the Hoover Onepwr DustChaser $105. A replaceable battery is a must. Many cheaper vacuum batteries die within a year or two and then the whole vacuum is useless. Hoover Onepwr batteries are replaceable and swappable. I'd also avoid many of the small wand vacuums they have very weak suction and their tiny filters clog instantly. If you want a small corded vacuum that will last 20 years I'd recommend the MetroVac DataVac $139. I bought 2 used MetroVacs both over 20 years old and they still work perfectly. It's a small corded canister vacuum with bags. It has stronger suction and is quieter than a cordless vacuum. The small hose makes it easier to clean tight corners and you can use it as a blower to clean PCs (outside of course).

Congrats on your new job. Handheld vacuums under $50 are pretty useless, they have weak suction, tiny bins, and an extremely short run time. They usually have no cyclonic separation so all of the dirt immediately clogs the filter. You need at least a Dyson V8 sized handheld with multiple cyclones for decent suction power and filtration but I still hesitate to recommend a cordless handheld because using it for work will wear out the battery really fast. I would choose a small corded vacuum with a hose to get into tight corners like the Hoover Commerical Portapower $159 or Simplicity S100 Sport $179. And I wouldn't use a big shop vacuum for the heavy cleaning I'd use a better quieter vacuum like the Powr-Flite Newton with Turbo Brush $175. The Newton is much quieter than a shop vac, it uses large and cheap hepa bags. I'd get the version with the Turbo Brush since it's not that much more than the standard Newton. The Turbo brush can connect to the wand or directly to the hose and it will help you clean floor mats and carpeting. It's not a wet/dry vacuum but they should buy a proper extractor if they want you to shampoo the interiors. You can save a lot by looking for a used Hoover or Simplicity vacuums too. Metro Vac makes some very compact and durable canister vacuums like the Vac 'N Blo Jr and Data Vac, I always see several used that are under $100. The best deals on cordless vacuum I could find are the Hoover Onepwr DustChaser $94, the Hoover Onepwr Hand Vac $99, maybe the Hyper Tough 1.5 gallon Wet/Dry Cordless Vacuum with battery & charger $84. What do you think?
