I like multipurpose gear, so I went with the Shark PowerDetect Cordless Stick Vacuum since it doubles as a handheld. I use it for shelves and the car, then snap it back to full mode for floors. Saves space compared to keeping two separate tools and has enough power for small jobs. Answer from ZealousidealLeave385 on reddit.com

r/VacuumCleaners on Reddit: Recommendation for portable handheld vacuum
June 20, 2022 -

I am on search for a cordless portable vacuum to supplement our main home vacuum. Main uses: clean spot spills, car interior(power and maneuverability important in this scenario), stairs, and furniture. 50/50 hard surface and carpet. Also want to include I have a dog that sheds. Characteristics I am looking for is power to remove stubborn debris in the car carpet, cordless/battery power that has a swappable replacement battery, lightweight for carpet stair cleaning, a rotating brush attachment, and small storage footprint. My budget is approximately $150.

So far on my research I have come up with 3 options:

Eufy homevac h30 infinity- the brush attachment, extension pieces, footprint seems to best fit my needs but unsure about long term availability of replacement batteries and of the power

Hart/Hoover onepwr blade max- saw this as a recommendation in another post. Drawback is the footprint although it looks to be a better overall vacuum. Also it’s much heavier than the h30

Shark CH951 Ultracyclone pet pro+ - I like the size and weight. It doesn’t have extension pieces which I am okay with. But I couldn’t find details if the battery is swappable so when the battery dies the vacuum is finished as well.

I am open to all suggestions!

what's the best cordless handheld vacuum these days? the cheaper the better if it actually works. mainly need it for tight spots in my car (between seats, cupholders, etc), so a crevice tool and decent suction would be huge. would be ideal if it charges fast and has a washable filter. what are you all using that wont die after a year?

EDIT: I ended up going with the Ryobi One+, and I'm pretty happy with it. Its surprisingly powerful for the size and the battery life is quite good too. thanks for the suggestions!

Budget - $200

Areas - This is specifically for dog hair removal. 90% of the area is carpet, stairs, edges of the room, hard to reach places. Bonus - being able to clean dog hair in my car.

I am looking for a handheld vacuum recommendation that has a lot of strength for cleaning up dog hair on carpet (on stairs, along the edges, etc). I would like a corded one as they would normally imply a stronger vacuum. It's very tiring carrying my full size vacuum around to use an attachment to clean stairs, edges, etc. I have bought a couple handheld cordless vacuums in the passed and they have all been pretty mediocre, hoping I can break that cycle! Thanks in advance.

The current one I am considering is the Shark CH950UKT.

I had a shark break a few years back. The local vacuum repair shop I took it to told me they can almost never fix sharks because they apparently don't make or sell spare parts. This may have changed but that is my experience with Shark.

As far as little handheld vacuum cleaners go, there is nothing amazing on the market, but there are some decent ones like the one for which you are looking. For ones on the market today, the one that you mentioned would do the job fine. Sure, Shark does not have great parts availability or service, but it would just be for getting little jobs here and there. If it breaks, I would assume it is not that huge of a deal. As far as suction and airflow numbers go for that Shark, it is a fairly impressive little thing. The build quality is nothing special, but not worse than any other little Chinese thing. Just make sure you keep the filters clean! Hoover also makes a handheld vacuum cleaner that I like called the ONEPWR Blade MAX "AutoVac" , although there is nothing stating that it cannot be used in a house. It does a lot of the same things as the Shark models, just with a hose that I like a lot and a better battery setup with two batteries. Also, it is more powerful by quite a bit. I would say that the main thing the Shark has over the Hoover is that the Hoover is more bulky, but the Hoover also is able to have a bigger bin with a more effective cyclone setup in it. Like the Shark, the quality is nothing spectacular, but it functions in its designed purpose.

My old Black+Decker Dustbuster just gave out after about 5 years of use. It actually held up surprisingly well, but one thing that always bothered me was how loud it was. it honestly seemed like it was louder than my full size vacuum. Not sure if I just got unlucky or if that model is just like that normally.

Now that it's finally died, I'm looking for a new handheld vacuum to replace it. Ideally something under $50, but I’d be willing to go up to $100 if the performance and reliability are worth it. Mainly using it for quick cleanups around the house and in the car for stuff like dust, hair, and some dirt.

Any favorites you’ve had good luck with?

Edit: I spent some time researching and reading through tons of comments to see what other redditors recommend. Based on that, I've put together a list of the most popular handheld vacuums. If you're looking for some ideas, I recommend checking these options:

Ryobi 18V One+ Performance

The Ryobi 18V One+ has powerful suction, long battery life, and practical features like a large dustbin and versatile attachments, making it one of the most capable and user-friendly handheld vacuums available right now

BLACK+DECKER Dustbuster Blast

The BLACK+DECKER Dustbuster Blast Cordless Handheld Vacuum is a lightweight, budget-friendly cleaner ideal for quick, everyday messes, offering easy handling, simple maintenance, and just enough suction power for light-duty tasks around the home.

Dyson Car + Boat

The Dyson Car+Boat Handheld Vacuum delivers powerful, full-size suction in a compact form with specialized tools and long battery life, making it ideal for deep cleaning cars, boats, and tight spaces.

Seems like a lot of the name brand handheld vacuums aren't really expected to last too long even if spending a ton, so now I'm hoping for a cheaper, more replaceable one (hopefully dont have to but I'd rather spend $40-80 every couple years than $300 every 2 years.

So far I am looking at Black and Decker ones around $20-40 and some Ryobi ones between $30-80 (I already have several Ryobi power tools and multiple batteries too.

What''s the recommended option here?

I’ve been shopping around myself lately for the same. I can’t recommend any but I can tell you that going by consumer reports ratings, shark wv201 is first followed by black and decker. I do have a Ryobi hand vac now. It’s not the usb model but an 18volt model I’m not sure which one exactly but it’s good for small stuff plus I have the batteries for for because of my other Ryobi tools like you do.

Congrats on your new job. Handheld vacuums under $50 are pretty useless, they have weak suction, tiny bins, and an extremely short run time. They usually have no cyclonic separation so all of the dirt immediately clogs the filter. You need at least a Dyson V8 sized handheld with multiple cyclones for decent suction power and filtration but I still hesitate to recommend a cordless handheld because using it for work will wear out the battery really fast. I would choose a small corded vacuum with a hose to get into tight corners like the Hoover Commerical Portapower $159 or Simplicity S100 Sport $179. And I wouldn't use a big shop vacuum for the heavy cleaning I'd use a better quieter vacuum like the Powr-Flite Newton with Turbo Brush $175. The Newton is much quieter than a shop vac, it uses large and cheap hepa bags. I'd get the version with the Turbo Brush since it's not that much more than the standard Newton. The Turbo brush can connect to the wand or directly to the hose and it will help you clean floor mats and carpeting. It's not a wet/dry vacuum but they should buy a proper extractor if they want you to shampoo the interiors. You can save a lot by looking for a used Hoover or Simplicity vacuums too. Metro Vac makes some very compact and durable canister vacuums like the Vac 'N Blo Jr and Data Vac, I always see several used that are under $100. The best deals on cordless vacuum I could find are the Hoover Onepwr DustChaser $94, the Hoover Onepwr Hand Vac $99, maybe the Hyper Tough 1.5 gallon Wet/Dry Cordless Vacuum with battery & charger $84. What do you think?

So thanks to this sub, I’ve gotten some great recommendations on vacuumes I absolutely love; an upright (Sebo Felix) and a canister (Miele C3 Brilliant). But of course, according to my wife, I got the wrong ones and what I should have gotten a small handheld.

We have 2 small kids and messes are an hourly occasion. We also have a multi level home (4 floors), so the arrangement we have now is great, with the Miele for the main floor and basement and then the Sebo for the top 2 floors, without having to lug around too much.

Where I need help is getting a small, but quality handheld for quick “fill in” cleaning when accidents happen vs having to lug the canister out, plug it in and then tear down once done.

What’s the best small handheld? Home is 3200 sq ft and 75% hardwood / 25% carpet and rugs. Budget-wise, i’d like you keep it under $500, but can be sold if something nicer is more expense.

Thanks!

If you want a cordless vacuum I'd look at the Hoover Onepwr DustChaser $105. A replaceable battery is a must. Many cheaper vacuum batteries die within a year or two and then the whole vacuum is useless. Hoover Onepwr batteries are replaceable and swappable. I'd also avoid many of the small wand vacuums they have very weak suction and their tiny filters clog instantly. If you want a small corded vacuum that will last 20 years I'd recommend the MetroVac DataVac $139. I bought 2 used MetroVacs both over 20 years old and they still work perfectly. It's a small corded canister vacuum with bags. It has stronger suction and is quieter than a cordless vacuum. The small hose makes it easier to clean tight corners and you can use it as a blower to clean PCs (outside of course).

I'm looking for a small handheld vacuum to clean up my office desktop. Mostly just food crumbs, the occasional dog hair, and sometimes a few strands of plastic from my 3D printer that shares my desk. I'd really like if I didn't have to go get my normal house vacuum cleaner every time I want to tidy up my desk. The suction from the hose is too much and just pulls everything into it.

I started looking around here for some thoughts on mini or handheld vacuum cleaners and it seems to feel like the general consensus is "don't bother, it's all just marketing crap".

Is that an accurate assumption? Does anyone have any other experiences with handheld vacuums that are passable for light duty desktop cleaning?

I am looking for a cordless handheld vacuum that will be primarily used to vacuum up cereal, crackers, other dry food spills (I have 3 toddlers) from carpet, as well as pet hair. It will be used daily. The last two handheld vacuums we had stopped working (I do not know why - probably because they were cheap). We have 2 other vacuums that are used for overall cleaning (one is a "regular" corded vacuum and the other is one for deep cleaning - I just don't want to lug out a heavy vacuum multiple times a day).

I saw a few vacuums on Amazon that seemed to be upright/lightweight vacuums (sort of like a Dyson in looks, I guess) that can be switched to a handheld vacuum. I do not trust the sources, but I would love if I could find one like that! Hopefully that makes sense.

Budget is $150, unfortunately!

PS- I did try to use the search function, but I must be terrible at searching because I didn't find anything. It is probably on me. Sorry!

Hello all! Thanks to so many wonderful recommendations and reviews on here and elsewhere, I decided to bite the bullet and grab a Sebo E3 Premium from Geek Vacuums (with a 15% discount - grabbed some extra bags and the premium parquet tool while I was at it). It will be arriving sometime next week. I'm planning on using it for my weekly deep cleans, but I'd love to have something I can use for quick and easy pickups in between those cleans - perhaps a handheld cordless vacuum. Any recommendations?

I also have a Black & Decker cordless handheld vacuum for picking up crumbs, peas, bits of cheese, and all the other detritus that accumulates under a dining table used by small kids. It does a fantastic job picking up bits of food, but cleaning it is a chore and it doesn't take long for the inside to get a funky as food particles get stuck in the filters.

I'm fed up of holding it over the bin as I use bits of recycling to pick pieces of old cheese out of the drum, and of whacking the filter against a brick outside to try and shake the accumulated dust loose. It's a messy and unpleasant process.

For my main vacuum, I have a Miele C3. Cleaning that is a matter of tossing the old bag and inserting a new one. That's is a far more pleasant process, but it's inconvenient to drag it out just to pick up a few stray crumbs, and handheld cleaners are all bag-less.

Is there a better way? I refuse to believe that everyone who uses a handheld vacuum is putting up with the same cleaning process as me, so what am I missing here? Is there a small rechargeable vacuum that isn't disgusting to clean?
